Rewatching My 100 Favorite Movies - Update 1

Rewatching My 100 Favorite Movie – Update 1

I decided to rewatch my 100 favorite movies of all-time. What those are, you can check HERE. I watch them in random order, there is no rhyme of reason there, just watching those movies I love so much.

1/ 100: The Shape of Water
Wonderful but vicious fairytale by Mexican horror master Guillermo Del Toro. It’s set in the 1950s in a secret army compound. There, the FBI captures a South American water creature and subjects it to cruel tests. The mute Elisa, who cleans the compounds with her friend Zelda, finds interest in the creature when she discovers him and something beautiful blooms between the two. Check out my review HERE .

2/ 100: High Fidelity (2000)
This film adaptation of Nick Hornby’s bestseller of the same name is set not in London but in Chicago. There Rob runs a snobbish record store, which is only visited by the true purists. The wandering thirty-something has an almost pathological record collecting frenzy and consistently categorizes everything by a top five, whether it’s music or women. When girlfriend Laura trades him for another, Rob finds out that there’s more to collecting than vinyl. Check out my review HERE .

Book Review - Casa Familia

Title:
Casa Familia
Series: Tara Linders and Diego Martinez # 2
Author: Nathalie Pagie

Description: A survival weekend in the Belgian Ardennes seems the perfect opportunity for journalist Tara Linders to get to know her new colleagues better. But she hates survival and she's not at her best in groups. She prefers to explore the area on her own. For her partner Diego Martinez, the weekend is the perfect distraction from his problems at home; he throws himself wholeheartedly into the activities. When Tara gets involved in a brawl at the local pub, she meets a couple of unsavory types who obviously don't like peepers. What do they have to hide? And what's going on in the empty hospital in the woods? Tara and Diego go to investigate. The sinister discovery of a child's hand soon leads to Spanish Andalusia, where the mastermind behind the operation is hiding. Will Tara and Diego manage to find him before there are more victims?

Review: Journalist Tara Linders goes to a company outing to the Belgian Ardennes for a survival weekend. It’s meant to get to know her co-workers better, but Tara is a real loner and is not at all keen on spending a weekend with her colleagues. She only gets along with Diego Martinez, her regular partner in journalism. When Tara witnesses a brawl, she discovers that there is much more behind the argument. When she chases one of the men, she ends up in an underground warehouse where all kinds of animals have been stuffed. Not only does she find taxidermy animals there, but she also comes across a human hand. Tara decides to further investigate with Diego.

“Casa Familia” revolves around the journalist duo of Tara and Diego, who first appeared in “Birds of Paradise”. I had never read a book in this series, but it’s not a big deal if you didn’t. It’s easy to get in to this story without having the knowledge of the previous book.

The book has a steady pace and very short chapters. And the story is well put together. We start 10 years before the rest of the events in the book. What happened 10 years earlier continues to haunt your mind throughout the book and as a reader you try to discover if you can finds hints somewhere that will lead to the answers. With that fast pace and those short chapters, it’s sometimes hard to put the book away.

This sometimes has a downside though. Some problems the characters run into are solved a little too easily without a good explanation.

Overall, “Casa Familia” has become an excellent thriller that certainly has a very good and original story. Especially the two main characters give the book just that little extra that a standard thriller sometimes misses.

Movie Review - Those Who Wish Me Dead

Director:
Taylor Sheridan
Genre: Action/ Drama/ Thriller
Runtime: 100 minutes
Year: 2021
Starring: Angelina Jolie, Jon Bernthal, Aidan Gillen, Nicholas Hoult, Jake Weber, Tyler Perry

Description: A teenage murder witness finds himself pursued by two assassins (Nicholas Hoult, Aidan Gillen) in the Montana wilderness with a survival expert (Angelina Jolie) tasked with protecting him – and a forest fire threatening to consume them all.

Review: It’s been quiet around Angelina Jolie for a while now, but in “Those Who Wish Me Dead”, sje takes on the role of the tough Hannah Faber. Hannah suffered quite a trauma while working as a firefighter, where she witnessed a number of people being consumed by flames. As a result, she is, to say the least, a bit destructive: a real adrenaline junkie who performs all kinds of stunts to get a kick out of it and consumes large amounts of alcohol. During the new ‘fire season’ in the vast American forest, firefighters are each assigned their own lookout, in order to assess whether a fire is about to break out somewhere.
Meanwhile, you see how two men break into a house and coldly kill the family living there and blow up their house. Owen sees the images on television ans is shocked. He immediately leaves the house with his son Connor for the only man he trusts, the sheriff in Hannah’s town: his brother-in-law Ethan. But he will never arrive, because the same two killers are after him now. His son Connor manages to escape and ends up finding Hannah, who will do anything to save this boy.
It all sounds exciting, but unfortunately nothing really comes off well. Yes, Angelina Jolie does a great job of portraying the role of the hurt power woman. And Finn Little, who plays Connor does a fine job as well. However, the film jumps around so much that none of the storylines are given time to develop properly. Hannah gets a little background, but that’s it. And the story of Ethan and his pregnant wife is overshadowed too. I would have liked to know more about them.
“Those Who Wish Me Dead” is a film hard to put in one genre. It is a thriller, certainly, but also has characteristics of a disaster movie, as well as a drama piece. Angelina Jolie plays her role with total dedication, but it’s the script that fails. The movie is fairly short for the story they want to tell and the characters they want us to relate to. It is still entertaining in a way, but leaves you with a lot of unanswered questions.

00s Movie Review - High Fidelity

Director:
Stephen Frears
Genre: Drama/ Comedy/ Romance
Runtime: 109 minutes
Year: 2000
Starring: John Cusack, Jack Black, Iben Hjelje, Joan Cusack, Lodd Louiso, Lisa Bonet, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Tim Robbins, Lili Taylor, Sara Gilbert

Description: Rob (John Cusack), a record store owner and compulsive list maker, recounts his top five breakups, including the one in progress.

Review: Everyone who grew up in the eighties, early nighties, recognizes something in Rob Gordon and his store Championship Vinyl. Rob is a 30-something guy, dresses okay, pays his bills, has a good education but is also a little stuck in life. And he is especially crazy about music, all sorts, preferably vinyl or cassette tape. Rob doesn’t care about his career, he rather works with his friends. Of all the important things that happen in his life, he makes top five lists. You might call it juvenile, but it can also be called authentic.
“High Fidelity” is the adaptation of the book by the British author Nick Hornby. The record store moves from North London (book) to Chicago (movie), but that’s not a problem.
John Cusack plays Rob Gordon. I’ve always had a thing for Cusack and I think this is the movie that it all began with. Rob is a sympathetic guy, he doesn’t really do a lot of useful stuff but you like him anyway. Rob just does what he likes to do. The fun thing about “High Fidelity” is that Rob breaks the fourth wall. He talks to the camera, to us viewers, making us a part of his story. Rob is in the middle of a break up with Laura and through flashbacks we see that it’s probably his fault it ended. John Cusack is perfect as Rob, who here portrays one of my favorite male movie characters. Jack Black is fun as Barry, an exhibitionist music freak who wants to be in the music business himself.
“High Fidelity” finds a good balance between humor and drama, but is mostly carried by the music and the meaning of it in the character’s lives. I think it’s an underappreciated movie, more people should love it. As Rob, I’m an avid top 5 list maker and “High Fidelity” is definitely in my top 5 of all-time favorite movies!

90s Movie Review - Sleeping with th Enemy

Director:
Joseph Ruben
Genre: Thriller/ Drama
Runtime: 99 minutes
Year: 1991
Starring: Julia Roberts, Patrick Bergin, Kevin Anderson, Elizabeth Lawrence

Description: A young woman (Julia Roberts) fakes her own death in an attempt to escape her nightmarish marriage, but discovers it is impossible to elude her controlling husband (Patrick Bergin)

Review: Laura lives with her husband Martin in a dream house on the beach. Her honeymoon three years ago was the happiest and most beautiful moment she has experiences. Since then, Laura has become quite a mess, because Martin has become a completely different man: violent, short-fused, a stickler for details and characterized by an insatiable sex craving.
When the towels in the bathroom are not hung straight or the labels of all the cans aren’t facing towards him, he loses it. Martin beats Laura and treats her like trash. Laura manages to flee him, trying to start a new life somewhere else. But she realizes that it’s even harder to escape him then she thought.
“Sleeping with the Enemy” is an early 90s thriller, but still very solid, exciting and entertaining.

90s Movie Review - Pocahontas

Director:
Mike Gabriel, Eric Goldberg
Genre: Animation/ Family/ Drama/ Adventure/ Musical/ Romance
Runtime: 81 minutes
Year: 1995
Starring: Iren Bedard, Mel Gibson, Christian Bale, Judy Kuhn, Jim Cummings, Billy Connolly, Linda Hunt, John Kassir, Russell Means

Description: An English soldier and the daughter of an Algonquin chief share a romance when English colonists invade seventeenth century Virginia.

Review: “Pocahontas” is loosely based on the life of the young Indian princess Matoaka, the daughter of the chief of the Powhatan, an Indian tribe that lived in what is now called Virginia. Among her tribesmen, Matoaka was known as Pocahontas, which means something like “playful”.
At the beginning of the 17th century, a British ship made the crossing to the New World with the plan to search for gold on the American mainland. John Smith, a young and enterprising sailor, makes the acquaintance of a young Indian woman who introduces herself as Pocahontas. Her father has promised her to Kocoum, a young warrior of the tribe, but Pocahontas falls in love with John Smith. The two meet each other in secret, but when Kocoum finds out, a fight ensues. John Smith is captured. Will Pocahontas manage to sav John?
The film’s story is based partly on fact and partly on fantasy. In real-life, Pocahontas was only 10 or 11 when she met John Smith. She ended up marrying another British settler, named John Rolfe, a few years later and traveled to Britain with him. Where she eventually died at the age of 20, due to tuberculosis. This is a less magical story, so Disney made it more family-friendly.
I believe “Pocahontas” is one of those underrated and overlooked Disney animations that most people don’t even talk about anymore. Which is a shame, because it’s a beautifully animated film with amazing songs. With “Colors of the Wind” being the absolute showstopper of course. “Pocahontas” has a short runtime, and that little length ensures that the film does not get bored for a moment.

10s Movie Review - Pete's Dragon

Director:
David Lowery
Genre: Adventure/ Family/ Fantasy
Runtime: 103 minutes
Year: 2016
Starring: Bryce Dallas Howard, Robert Redford, Oona Laurence, Wes Bentley, Karl Urban, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Oakes Fegley

I WATCHED THIS MOVIE FOR MY 2021 MOVIE CHALLENGE.
WEEK 29: A REMAKE

Description: The adventures of an orphaned boy named Pete and his best friend Elliott, who happens to be a dragon.

Review: Disney is rapidly turning its catalog of classic animated film into live-action movies. The original version of “Pete’s Dragon” is only partially animated, the dragon is hand-drawn. In this live-action Disney film, they created dragon Elliot in a more realistic way and it looks stunning.
Young Pete loses his parents in a car accident and disappears into the nearby woods, where he befriends dragon Elliott. This dragon has been a myth for decades for the nearby town. Meacham, one of the citizens, claims to have seem him once. His daughter Grace never believed him, until she finds Pete and hears his stories about Elliott.
With “Pete’s Dragon”, Disney returns to the warm family films that made the company so great. The emotions that are evoked are sincere, so that the makers can easily be forgiven for the straightforward type of story. It’s a magical, heart-warming story, with amazing visuals.

10s Movie Review - Soul Surfer

Director:
 Sean McNamara
Genre: Drama
Runtime: 112 minutes
Year: 2011
Starring: AnnaSophia Robb, Helen Hunt, Dennis Quaid, Kevin Sorbo, Carrie Underwood, Ross Thomas, Chris Brochu, Lorraine Nicholson, Jeremy Sumpter, Sonya Balmores

Description: Teenage surfer Bethany Hamilton (AnnaSophia Robb) overcomes the odds and her own fears of returning to the water after losing her left arm in a shark attack.

Review: The true story is about surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost her left arm at the age of thirteen due to a shark attack. The start of the film shows us Bethany growing up in Oahu, Hawaii, along with her two brothers Timmy and Noah. It soon becomes clear that she was born to surf and that her parents Tom and Cheri have supported her from the beginning in realizing her dream of becoming a professional.
But when she and her best friend Alana go surfing on the morning of Halloween, a shark attacks her and she loses her arm. She does survive and from that moment on everything becomes a challenge. Yet Bethany is determined to get back into the water as soon as possible.
There is a strong emphasis in the film on faith in God, and how anyone can achieve the impossible through His help. Bethany is a huge go-getter and doesn’t let anything stop her, but this is mainly because she is convinced that God has a plan for her and will use the very loss of her arm to bring something beautiful out of it. For me, that makes the film a bit to sugar-sweet, but might be inspiring for many. It is very beautiful to see how her family and friends support her and give the necessary advice, but also how Bethany responds and seems to do the same in return. This could be a very inspiring film and story for you g boys and girls.
There is one scene, that really made me cringe though. We see that the shark who attacked Bethany (which is not a very spectacular scene by the way) was caught and everyone, including Bethany’s father, stand around it. As he is some evil being. Yeah, the film really lost a point here.
It is inspiring how Bethany Hamilton overcame such a traumatic experience and got back on the surf board to become a successful professional surfer.

Oldies Movie Review - Peter pan

Director:
Clyde Geronimi, Wilfred Jackson, Hamilton Luske, Jack Kinney
Genre: Animation/ Family/ Fantasy/ Adventure/ Musical
Runtime: 76 minutes
Year: 1953
Starring: Bobby Driscoll, Kathryn Beaumont, Hans Conried, Bill Thompson, Heather Angel, Paul Collins, Tommy Luske, Candy Candido, Tom Conway

WEEK 28: A MOVIE FROM THE 50S

Description: Wendy and her brothers are whisked away to the magical world of Neverland with the hero of their stories, Peter Pan.

Review: “Peter Pan” is Walt Disney’s ninth animated feature film, but the film was planned to be the second. Due to negotiation problems, the studio was unable to film the story. Eventually Disney managed to get the rights and the film was made in 1953. And to the day, it's both a fiercely criticized and successful animated film.
Wendy is a young girl who lives with her parents and her younger brothers John and Michael in London. She is a huge fan of Peter Pan and she is convinced that he really exists. After all, she has found his shadow. When Peter Pan comes to get his shadow back, the adventure begins for Wendy and her brothers. For Peter pan and his faithful companion Tinkerbell take them to Neverland. Where they meet the lost boys, the Indians, the mermaids and the evil Captain Hook.
Walt Disney strongly criticized his ninth film, saying Peter Pan was too arrogant. But to stay true to the character conceived by J.M. Barrie, Pan was positioned that way. It worked out well, as the film was praised. In an era when a little less attention was paid to stereotyping. But “Peter Pan” is full of stereotypes. To this day, the creators can even ne accused of racism. The positioned characters that could cause a lot of controversy, but let’s keep in mind that it’s an innocent children’s movie and it wasn’t meant to be that at all.
That said, I must also say that Peter Pan excels in beautiful hand-drawn animation. Which certainly could be called magical in the period in which the film was released. The film stoof the test of time well, when it comes to that. It’s still and enchanting Disney classic in which action, humor, suspense and romance go hand in hand.

What's in a Movie Year - 2012

Taking a look at the year 2012, picking my 10 favorite movies from that year in random order.

The Avengers
Spectacular and amusing superhero film, written and directed by Joss Whedon. In my opion, still the best Avengers film of the series. And a great start to the now epic franchise.

The Cabin in the Woods
According to the clichés of the horror genre, five students go to an abandoned cabin in the woods to be slaughtered. But besides that, this inventive, often hilarious film goes its own way. Also from the mind of Joss Whedon, but directed by his friend Drew Goddard. Together they wrote the script, in a hotel room, in three days. It’s a unique horror film, that is not what you think it is.

Ted
Teddy bear Ted once came to life thanks to a Christmas wish from his owner John. Now, 25 years later, the duo is still inseparable, with a shared interest in beer and pulp TV. How many jokes can you make about a swearing and drinking teddybear? Well, quite a lot. And Seth MacFarlane (known for his animated series “Family Guy), does a good job with his directorial feature film debut. Some jokes about farts and dicks, but mostly intelligent and hilarious scenes, which are especially convincing thanks to the immaculate animation of the bear.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower
At first sight it’s yet another high school movie, about the timid Charlie, a boy without friends. But then he meets the extravagant Patrick and Sam. A Brat Pack-like formula film that comes a quarter of a century late, drenched in nostalgia, but with a fine set of protagonists and a surprisingly vicious twist. Based on director Stephen Chbosky’s novel of the same name.

Argo
It really happened: in 1980 the CIA, in collaboration with Hollywood during the Iranian hostage crisis, produced a fake science fiction film that was supposed to be shot in Iran in order to liberate a group of Americans there. In his third film as director, Ben Affleck transforms history into an exciting, witty political thriller with tasteful feel-good elements. Affleck, himself in the leading role as a man with a plane, remains a somewhat flat actor but has only gathered strong opponents around him, such as Alan Arkin, John Goodman and Bryan Cranston. The convincing image of time contributes to the feeling that the truth has bot been violated too much.

Silver Linings Playbook
Pat is taken home by his mother after eight legally imposed months in an institution. Immediately it turns our that bipolar Pat is definitely not cured yet. Then he meets Tiffany, a young woman who is adrift after the sudden death of her husband. A vivid tragicomedy and feel-good film carried by a great cast, with Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence in front.

Zero Dark Thirty
Masterful thriller, and without a doubt the best film about the War on Terror. For 157 minutes, director Kathryn Bigelow reconstructs the manhunt for Osama Bin Laden in a contemplative style, from the chilling opening minutes in which a suspect is gruesomely tortured by the CIA to the monumental, nerve-wrecking final act in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Th suggestion that the torture was essential to locate Bin Laden led to furious protests, but in tone “Zero Dark Thirty” is far from propagandist.

Django Unchained
Director Quentin Tarantino had already focused on abused women and oppressed Jews, so now it was time for nineteenth-century American slaves. Freed slave Django wants to free his wife from the hands of a sadistic plantation owner with the help of a German bounty hunter. Thematically daring, brutal spaghetti westerns and it has been remarkably straightforward, with some brilliant scenes. Highlight is the supporting role of Samuel L. Jackson, as one of the most racist sob’s ever in movie history.

Moonrise Kingdom
Adolescents Sam and Suzy are outsiders in a small American Island communitu in 1965. When they flee together, the adults on the island panic. Director Wes Anderson wanted to capture the tenderness and ferocity of a first love in his seventh feature film. He does this in his unique way, with dry comedy, pointed dialogues, absurdist twists and a design that is meticulous down to the last detail. Charming, witty and heartwarming.

Bernie
Jack Black is at his most charming as Bernie. He is the local mortician in a small village in Texas. He is loved by everyone. this doesn’t change when, out of frustration, he kulls the hated widow he lives with in cold blood. Bizarre story, told as a light-hearted docudrama, is based on true events.

Movie Review - Fear Street Part 3: 1666

Director:
Leigh Janiak
Genre: Horror/ Thriller
Runtime: 114 minutes
Year: 2021
Starring: Kiana Madeira, Ashley Zuckerman, Gillian Jacobs, Olivia Scott Welch, Sadie Sink, Elizabeth Scopel, Benjamin Flores Jr., Randy Havens, Julia Rehwald, Michael Chandler

Description: The origins of Sarah Fier’s curse are finally reveals as history comes full circle on a night that changes the lives of Shadysiders forever.

Review: At the end of “Fear Street Part 2: 1978” we saw that Deena ended up in 1666, as Sarah Fier. In the third and final part of the Fear Street series, “Fear Street Part 3: 1666” we finally learn where the curse started.
A colonial town is gripped by a ruthless and hysterical witch hunt that will have deadly consequences for centuries to come. Back in 1994, Deena, Ziggy and their friends are trying to end the dark curse once and for all, before it’s really too late.
The finale of the Fear Street movies is now on Netflix. Part 3 reveals how Sarah Fier’s curse became part of Shadyside’s history and changed the lives of its inhabitants forever. The cast from the first part returns, at least most of them and some of the second film also make an appearance. Again there is no shortage of blood and gore in this film. I liked how they did the jump in time, where we start in 1666 and eventually end up back in 1994 where the trilogy started. That brings this trilogy full circle.
I enjoyed this film, it’s just as good as the second film. I really liked this trilogy and would love for Netflix to do more movies series like this.
