10s Movie Review - Isn't It Romantic

Director: Todd Strauss-Schulson
Genre: Comedy/ Romance
Runtime: 89 minutes
Year: 2019
Starring: Rebel Wilson, Liam Hemsworth, Adam Devine, Priyanka Chopra, Jennifer Saunders, Betty Gilpin, Brandon Scott Jones

Description: Natalie (Rebel Wilson) is disenchanted with love and mysteriously finds herself trapped inside a romantic comedy.

Review: The New York architect Natalie does everything to stand out at work, but sadly people just see her as the girl who gets them coffee and sandwiches. And instead of designing the next beautiful building, she only gets to design the parking garages of those buildings. Natalie is cynical about love: she hates romcoms and things the only reason men would marry her are for a green card. Her life isn’t a success and she gets even more unlucky, when she is mugged and ends up in the hospital. But when she wakes up, the nightmare is about to start: she is stuck in a romantic comedy and Natalie herself is the leading lady.
Rebel Wilson plays Natalie and she is one of those actresses you either like or not. I do enjoy watching her, even when she can be a little too much at times. But for a comedy like this, she is the perfect choice.
“Isn’t it Romantic” is a romcom that is self-aware and mocks other films in the genre. It makes fun of the typical clichés we all know from these films, like stopping a wedding and dress-up montages.
Wilson makes turns this film into a fun time and it will make you laugh out loud sometimes. It’s definitely not one of the best in its genre, but it is a super enjoyable film when you’re in the mood for something funny and light-hearted.

10s Movie Review - The Final Girls

Director: Todd Strauss-Schulson
Genre: Comedy/ Horror/ Thriller
Runtime: 88 minutes
Year: 2015
Starring: Taisa Farmiga, Malin Akerman, Alexander Ludwig, Nina Dobrev, Adam Devine, Alia Shawkat

Description: A young woman (Taisa Farmiga) grieving the loss of her mother (Malin Akerman), a famous scream queen from the 1980s, finds herself pulled into the world of her mom's most famous movie. Reunited, the women must fight off the film's maniacal killer.

Review: “The Final Girls” is a horror comedy that mocks slasher films, but not in the ridiculous way “Scary Movie” did. And it’s not as predictable as most slashers. The story movie within the movie isn’t original, but the story of this film is. And it’s very entertaining.
The term ‘final girl’ stands fort he girl that makes it to the end of a horror movie and manages to kill the person hunting her. Max is a teenage girl still mourning the dead of her mother Amanda, who was a 1980s actress who got her fame due to a bad slasher flick. Max and her friends go to a showing of Amanda’s most known film “Camp Blood”. When a fire breaks out in the theater, they are somehow sucked into the movie, having to live it themselves.
The killer, Billy, is a bad copy of Jason Voorhees. The premise is a bit like “Last Action Hero” and “Groundhog Day”. And it all somehow works, because it’s a super fun watch. With excellent leads Taisa Farmiga (Vera Farmiga’s younger sister) and Malin Akerman, it does even a bit better in the acting department then a lot of slasher films.
I really enjoyed this slasher, it’s really funny and it mocks the genre in a very original way. Without ever becoming over-the-top.

100 Movie Challenge 2017 - # 88: Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates

Director: Jake Szymanski
Genre: Comedy/ Romance
Runtime: 99 minutes
Year: 2016
Starring: Zac Efron, Adam Devine, Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza, Stephen Root, Jake Johnson

Description: Two hard-partying brothers (Adam Devine, Zac Efron) place an online ad to find the perfect dates for their sister's Hawaiian wedding. Hoping for a wild getaway, the boys instead find themselves out-hustled by an uncontrollable duo (Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza).

Review: Mike and Dave are two brothers that always manage to make a party more fun. But not according to their family, because to them they ruin every party. Now their little sister is about to get married and Mike and Dave’s parents want them to bring proper dates to the wedding. Nice girls. They decide to put an add online. Alice and Tatiana see this add and can’t wait to take a free trip to Hawaii and become their wedding dates. But they aren’t nice girls. They party just as hard as Mike and Dave. They manage to fool the boys and they tag along with them to the wedding in Hawaii.
The plot is simple and anything but original. And the humor is juvenile and distasteful. The leading characters, Mike, Dave, Alice and Tatiana, are all just characters. They are to ridiculous to be believable as actual people. Maybe Dave a little bit, but the other three aren’t.
Zac Efron and Adam Devine do see like they had tons of fun making this movie, and that somewhat rubs off on the audience. And I did laugh on occasion. But overall, “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates” is an average silly and predictable comedy.
