20s Movie Review - The Silencing

Director:
Robin Pront
Genre: Action/ Crime/ Mystery/ Thriller
Runtime: 93 minutes
Year: 2020
Starring: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Annabelle Wallis, Zahn McClarnon, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Jason Jazrawy, Melanie Srofano, Charlotte Lindsay Marrow

Description: A reformed hunter (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) living in isolation on a wildlife sanctuary becomes involved in a deadly game of cat and mouse when he and the local Sheriff (Annabelle Wallis) set out to track a vicious killer who may have kidnapped his daughter years ago.

Review: Rayburn Swanson lives alone on a wildlife sanctuary. After his daughter disappeared 4 years ago, he lives a life of solitude and protects the area. When a mysterious killer appears in this sanctuary, he and the local Sheriff try to figure out who he is and if he might have been involved in his daughter’s disappearance.

The setting is perfect for a thriller like this, somewhere in the chilly woods in northern US. The film is nowhere remarkable or original, but it’s engaging and suspenseful and I don’t get all the negative reviews this film is getting.

The script aims higher then a no-nonsense and taut thriller about the search for a killer. Director Robin Pront gives the characters more depth increase dramatic potential. And that’s successful for most part. The Sheriff dealing with a moral dilemma, Rayburn’s personal demons.

The film is somewhat predictable, but overall it’s a pretty solid thriller that I really enjoyed and kept me engaged the full runtime.

20s Movie Review - Malignant

Director:
James Wan,
Genre: Horror
Runtime: 111 minutes
Year: 2021
Starring: Annabelle Wallis, Maddie Hasson, George Young, Michole Brianna White, Jacqueline McKenzie

Description: Madison (Annabelle Wallis) is paralyzed by shocking visions of grisly murders, and her torment worsens as she discovers that these waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities.

Review: James Wan is one of the best current horror movie directors. Because after “Saw”, ‘Insidious” and “The Conjuring”, he shows with “Malignant”again how well this genre suits him.

When the pregnant Madison loses both her husband and her inborn child in an unexplained attack one night, her life falls apart. Yet things don’t get much better after that, when she starts having visions of similar killings, which are completely consistent with what is happening in reality at the time. And I’m stopping here, because it’s best to not know too much about the film before you watch it.

From the very first shot it is clear that “Malignant” is a horror film, but Wan leaves the viewers guessing to what kind of horror movie is exactly is. These days it’s somehow very difficult for director to create an original horror movie that is unpredictable. But James Wan did it. “Malignant” is one of the most original and surprising horror movies I’ve seen recently. With an ending you could never predict.

10s Movie Review - Tag

Director: Jeff Tomsic
Genre: Comedy
Runtime: 100 minutes
Year: 2018
Starring: Ed Helms, Jon Hamm, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Isla Fisher, Nora Dunn, Jeremy Renner, Hannibal Buress, Leslie Bibb, Rashida Jones, Thomas Middleditch, Lil Rey Howery

Description: A small group of classmates organize an elaborate, annual game of tag that requires some travel all over the country.

Review: “Tag” is based on a true story, but this fact should not be taken too seriously. The starting point of a few friends in their forties who have been playing tag for years and who are perhaps even more fanatical about it in adulthood than as children, is indeed as it was noted in ‘The Wall Street Journal’ in 2013. But that doesn’t alter the fact that the characters in the film have virtually nothing to do with the member of the real club of friends and hardly any scenes reflect passages from the article. Just the fact that adult men have been playing tag since childhood was enough to create this film, because the film would have been the same if it was a completely new idea.
There is nothing wrong with that, by the way. Every story can be an inspiration for a film, but not everything that has been taken from life should become a prestigious Oscar drama. So it’s a good idea to simply make a fun comedy about five childhood friends who have grown apart in the usual way, but who manage to maintain their friendship by playing tag one full month a year.
There is not much to be done with the simple starting point, but thematically there is something to work with. Most of the men in the story pretty much all got their lives together, but simple keep playing tag for childhood sentiment’s sake. And that’s okay. But there is no room for any depth. It's clear that “Tag” want to be nothing more than a simple comedy, and in doing so, it’s doing a pretty nice job. This is mainly due to the workable approach that one of the five men has never been tagged. This resulting in the other four players trying to end his record. Easier said than done, because he is probably the best tagger ever.
I think the best element of the film is the casting. Jeremy Renner is cast well as Jerry, the unbeatable one. And Ed Helms, Isla Fisher, Jake Johnson and Hannibal Buress really belong in a movie like this. Jon Hamm feels a little out of place, but that’s nothing that would bother you.
I could compare “Tag” to “Game Night”, which was a lot better on so many levels. But “Tag” is an entertaining, enjoyable and funny enough for a fun movie night.

TV Show Review - Peaky Blinders (Season 3)

Genre: Thriller/ Drama/ Crime
Number of episodes: 6
Year: 2016
Starring: Cillian Murphy, Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson, Annabelle Wallis, Sophie Rundle, Joe Cole, Tom Hardy, Paddy Considine, Natasha O’Keefe, Packy Lee, Finn Cole, Kate Phillips, Gaite Jansen

Description: Set in 1924, two years after the events in series 2. It follows the Shelby family as they enter a dangerous world of international intrigue. Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and his entire organization are at risk forcing him to question everything about his ambitions and desires.

Review: After two very strong seasons, expectations are very high. And even though it never reaches that same level, “Peaky Blinders” is still one of the best crime series out there. The people Tommy Shelby and his organization have to face this time, are stronger than ever. Series 3 follows the same kind of pattern, but eventually manages to surprise big at the end.
The third season focusses on personal development. A quest for their role in this complete picture. At the start everyone is living their best life: Tommy marries Grace, live in a beautiful mansion and have a son named Charlie. Even the very unstable and aggressive Arthur is married now and has devoted himself to the lord. But in that first episode, they also see that trouble isn’t that far away. And this time it’s the Russians. The Bourgeoisie that were send away from Russia by the communists. They want to return, but need the Peaky Blinders to find weapons. They are represented by a wealthy family, with especially daughter Tatiana playing a confusing role in this all. Driving Tommy crazy.
Arthur is led by his wife Linda. Aunt Polly is in search for love and acknowledgment. She seems weaker then ever and regularly reaches for the bottle. Her son Michael is confronted with a reverend from his past. This same reverend, Hughes, becomes Tommy’s biggest threat.
Series 3 is a filled with political games. Which will intrigue viewers, but misses the sparks from the previous two seasons. But it’s still on top, when it comes to other shows in this genre. The acting is again great. Cillian Murphy’s Tommy shows more weak moments and he loses his cool a couple of times. Which is a Tommy we didn’t see often yet. And we are introduced to Reverend Hughes, played wonderfully by Paddy Considine.
A good third season, I’m ready for season 4.

TV Show Review - Peaky Blinders (Season 2)

Season: 2
Genre: Thriller/ Drama/ Crime
Number of episodes: 6
Year: 2014
Starring: Cillian Murphy, Sam Neill, Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson, Annabelle Wallis, Sophie Rundle, Joe Cole, Tom Hardy

Description: A gangster family epic set in 1919 Birmingham, England; centered on a gang who sew razor blades in the peaks of their caps, and their fierce boss Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy)

Review: “Peaky Blinders” has a strong first season, that made me jump into season 2 immediately. And it’s even better! More locations are used and new characters are added, with the most important ones being Alfie Solomons (played by Tom Hardy) and Darby Sabini (played by Noah Taylor). Real personalities.
Tommy Shelby could use some opponents that are a serious threat. Where in the first season Tommy tries to own Birmingham, he now tries to take over London. But London just happens to be the terrain for Solomons and Sabini. Tommy is even more ambitious in season 2. He buys a race horse and meets some elites, which he manages to win for him. And even Winston Churchill wants to work with him. Tommy has to deal with Chester Campbell again as well, but this season focusses on the expansion of the Shelby family.
Arthur and John get more responsibilities. Paul Anderson, who portrays Arthur, gets more interesting things to do with his character. And the same goes for Helen McCrory, as Aunt Polly, who starts a search for her long lost children that were taken from her. But her storyline is the least interesting. I also found the romance story of Tommy and his old love a bit rushed this time.
Cillian Murphy is again the man that carries the series, as Tommy. But he is very well assisted by Tom Hardy this time. He’s only in a few scenes, but he steels them all. He has such charisma, it almost makes Murphy fade away.
The most epic moments of this season are definitely the ambush by Sabini in the first episode and the big fight scene in Sabini’s London club.
The second season did it again and was very strong. Let season 3 begin!

TV Show Review - Peaky Blinders (Season 1)

Season: 1
Genre: Thriller/ Drama/ Crime
Number of episodes: 6
Year: 2013
Starring: Cillian Murphy, Sam Neill, Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson, Annabelle Wallis, Sophie Rundle, Joe Cole, Michael Gray

Description: A gangster family epic set in 1919 Birmingham, England; centered on a gang who sew razor blades in the peaks of their caps, and their fierce boss Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy)

Review: Birmingham, right after World War I. The Peaky Blinders gang rules the streets of England. The criminals can be recognized by their caps, where they sew razor blades into the peaks of their caps. Their leader is Tommy Shelby, played by Cillian Murphy. Belfast detective Chester Campbell is called to England to clean the streets and take care of the Peaky Blinders.
When you love the gangster and crime genre, the first season of “Peaky Blinders” will be true gold and easy to watch in one sitting. It has all the ingredients for a good, compelling TV series: an excellent cast, it looks amazing, interesting characters, strong story.
Not a lot of locations were used for this series, but the period it’s set in is pictured perfectly. In this time, it’s either calling the shots yourself or being suppressed. The Peaky Blinders, and especially their leader Tommy, choose the first. Because when you look closer you can see that Tommy never wants to feel powerlessness again. He wants to create his own destiny and this for he builds his own imperium.
Cillian Murphy is the perfect choice for Tommy Shelby. Charismatic yet dangerous, unpredictable yet timid. I’ve always loved Murphy as an actor and he really carries this series.
The first season is mostly a fight for power between Tommy and detective Campbell. Campbell wants to clean the streets of Birmingham free from criminals like the Peaky Blinders.
“Peaky Blinders” had been on my watchlist for a while and when a few of my friends told me I really had to start watching, I finally did. I watched the first season in 2 days and I’m hooked. It’s a fantastic first season and I can’t wait what will happen next.

10s Movie Review - The Mummy

Director: Alex Kurtzman
Genre: Action/ Adventure/ Fantasy/ Thriller
Runtime: 110 minutes
Year: 2017
Starring: Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis, Russel Crowe, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance

Description: An ancient Egyptian princess (Sofia Boutella) is awakened from her crypt beneath the desert, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia, and terrors that defy human comprehension

Review: Hollywood is trying to create as many film universes, but the oldest one has been untouched for a while. Universal Monsters was around in the 20s, a cinematic world shared by monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy and the Invisible Man. Director Alex Kurtzman are trying to bring this universe back to life, under the name Dark Universe. And “The Mummy” is the first film. But it’s not really a noteworthy film.
We are introduced to the legend of Egyptian princess Ahmanet. Later we meet Nick Morton, who discovers a tomb by accident. The introduction of the film is fast paced, but it all happens too quick and there is no room for actual build-up or focus.
The story of “The Mummy” is thin and has no real substance. The introduction of Dr. Jekyll feels forced and a set up to the next Dark Universe film. This gives the film even less focus.
Overall, all these elements make “The Mummy” a very mediocre and forgettable blockbuster. Even a star like Tom Cruise couldn’t safe this film.
