90s Movie Review - 10 Things I Hate About You

Description: Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) is a pretty and popular teenager who can’t go out on a date until her ill tempered older sister Kat (Julia Stiles) does.

Review: Walter Stratford is afraid that his youngest daughter Bianca ends up with babies, if she ever goes on a date. That’s why she is not allowed to date. Of course, Bianca doesn’t accept that, so dad adjusts the rule. She can date, if her older sister Kat does too. Sounds reasonable, but it actually isn’t. Kat is a feisty, sometimes bitchy teen. Newcomer Cameron, who falls for Bianca immediately, finds a way to take Bianca out. He has to find a guy to date Kat. Joey, a very popular boy, helps him by paying Patrick Verona to take out Kat. But then it turns out that Patrick starts liking Kat.
“10 Things I Hate About You” is one of the few romantic teen comedies that I absolutely love. The acting is pretty good, the script is original (at that time at least). There are many characters that I really like and can relate too. And the music is perfect for the atmosphere of the film.
I’ve seen this comedy many times and it’s the perfect date movie.

Top 5 Thursday: Movies for a Girls Night

I just love a night in with my girlfriends. And than especially with a big bucket of popcorn and a pile of films. Here are the five perfect movies for a girls night.

5. Bring It On
Cheerleading is not a thing in The Netherlands and if it were, me and my friends certainly wouldn’t be on. But that doesn’t mean we don’t like the drama. “Bring It On” is a fun chick flick, no brains necessary.

4. 10 Things I Hate About You
“10 Things I Hate About You” is one of the few chick flicks I’m not embarrassed to say I love, because it’s actually a really good movie.

3. Crazy Stupid Love
This is a girls film, that is also suitable for men. So my male friends will probably enjoy this film too. And it has depth. I love this film and it has a great cast.

2. Easy A
Me and my friend Inge love to watch this movie together. Some other friends don’t really understand our love for it though. But be honest, “Easy A” is a fantastic comedy.

1. Bridesmaids
A film for girls with girls. The female version of “The Hangover” they call it. But trust me, “Bridesmaids” is much better!

Marry: Richard Jones is a loving husband, he stands by his wife at all times.

Kiss: Patrick Verona is a so-called rebel, but he has a soft spot. He’s actually a very sweet and adorable guy. Wouldn’t you just melt if he sang for you like he did in the movie?

Cliff: I don’t really want to push Marcus Wright of a cliff, but he isn’t human. He’s a terminator. If I push him, all that happens is that he breaks. I could fix him afterwards.

Me & 3 High School Movies

High School is in the past for me and I would like to keep it there. Let’s just say it wasn’t as great as it seems in the movies. Because I do like high school movies and I picked some of my favorites to watch for this item.

Opinion: What can I say, it’s a guilty pleasure. And for a teen movie it is pretty good. I can watch it over and over again and that musical performance by Heath Ledger is just great.
Favorite character: Kat Stratford
Most memorable quote: “You don’t always have to b who they want you to be, you know?” -Kat Stratford-
Best scene: Patrick tries to get Kat’s attention by singing” Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You” in front of the entire school.

The Breakfast Club

Description: Five high school students, all different stereotypes, meet in detention, where they pour their hearts out to each other, and discover how they have a lot more in common than they thought.
Opinion: I love 80’s movies and this I actually one of my favorites. Nothing really spectacular happens, but I enjoy watching the characters develop. And some great dialogues.
Favorite character: John Bender
Most memorable quote: “We’re all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it, that’s all” –Andrew Clark-
Best scene: When John Bender falls thought the roof.

Easy A

Description: A clean-cut high school student relies on the school's rumor mill to advance her social and financial standing.
Opinion: By just reading the synopsis it didn’t seem like a special movie, so I wasn’t sure if I would like it. Well, I love it! Olive is actually one of my favourite movie characters.
Favorite character: Olive Penderghast
Most memorable quote: “Whatever happened to chivalry? Does it only exist in 80's movies? I want John Cusack holding a boombox outside my window. I wanna ride off on a lawnmower with Patrick Dempsey. I want Jake from Sixteen Candles waiting outside the church for me. I want Judd Nelson thrusting his fist into the air because he knows he got me. Just once I want my life to be like an 80's movie, preferably one with a really awesome musical number for no apparent reason. But no, no, John Hughes did not direct my life.” –Olive Penderghast-
Best scene: Where we see how Olive actually spend her weekend.

Movie Moments: "10 Things I Hate About You"

This is one of the only teen comedies I really love and appreciate. And it's full of great moments. Here are my favorites in the order of how they appear in the movie.

Moment # 1: Oops!
Joey blocks Kat’s car with his. Kat isn’t going to wait, so she rams the car and then responses with a sarcastic ‘oops’.

Moment # 2: Drunk Kat
While attending a party, Kat gets a bit drunk. Patrick gets her out of the room so Kat can get some fresh air. They start talking to each other on the swings. The first time the two of them smile at each other. And then Kat throws up.

Moment # 3: Bookstore
After the party, where Patrick refused to kiss Kat because she was drunk, Patrick follows Kat into a bookstore. He peaks through the shelves looking at her.

Moment # 4: “You’re just to good to be true”
While Kate has soccer practice, Patrick has found the perfect way to impres her. He turns up the speakers and starts singing “You’re just to good to be true”. It actually does impress Kat, but Patrick has to go in detention for it.

Moment # 5: Flashing the teacher
Kat is trying to get Patrick out of detention and tries all sort of things. Eventually she flashes the teacher in front of the entire class.

Moment # 6: Paintball
Kat and Patrick go paintballing together. They seem to have a lot of fun, because in the end Patrick kisses Kat.

Moment # 7: Kat tells Bianca about Joey
Kat tells Bianca why she hates Joey. Kat used to like him too. They had sex, because everyone was doing it, but ended up regretting it afterwords. This is a moment where the two so different sisters band.

Moment # 8: Bianca punches Joey
She liked him at first, but now Bianca finally sees what a douche Joey is. On promnight she punches him. One for Cameron, one for Kat and finally one for her.

Moment # 9: Kat hugs her dad
Kat and her father have been very distant since her mother died. Her dream is to go to Sarah Lawrence, an art school. When Kat’s dad tells her she can go, she hugs him.

Moment # 10: Kat's poem
After Kat found out about the bet, she wrote a poem for English class. It’s about Patrick and she shares all the things she hates about him. But the thing she hates the most is that she can’t hate him at all.

Moment # 11: The gift
To make up with Kat, Patrick buys her a gift. When Kat wants to leave school, a shiny new fender stratocastor guitar is in her car.

I'm not a fan of teen comedies, but "10 Things I Hate About You" is one of the few in that genre that is actually good and fun to watch. And I can watch it over and over again. Here are the most important characters of the film.

Kat Stratford
Played by: Julia Stiles
She is a kick ass girl with her own ambitions and will. Kat doesn't like boys in general because she was hurt by one very badly. She's very strong and she doesn't give a damn about what other people think of her. Kat likes rock music, is a feminist, and is very smart.

Patrick Verona
Played by: Heath Ledger
Most people are affraid of Patrick, but there's really no reason to. He has a bad boy look and image, but he's not bad at all. He's actually very kindhearted, but wants people to think he's a badass so he doesn't have to interact with them. Patrick has to take Kat out, but eventually falls in love with her.

Bianca Stratford
Played by: Larisa Oleynik
She's Kat's younger sister and the complete opposite of her. Bianca is interested in fashion, make-up and boys and that makes her a bit shallow. After meeting Cameron we find out she's a bit more then just another pretty face. Bianca is a very social and sweet girl, with more potential.

Cameron James
Played by: Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Cameron falls for Bianca on the first day at his new school. He knows what he wants, Bianca, and he does everything in his power to get her. Although Cameron is a very shy guy by nature, he's not affraid to be honest to the people around him. Cameron is probably the best guy any high-school girl could end up with.

Joey Donner
Played by: Andrew Keegan
The pretty boy. Every girl wants to date Joey Donner, but with him the looks is pretty much all you get. He's a major jerk and not the sharpest tool in the shed either. All the girls love him, all the guys don't.

Michael Eckman
Played by: David Krumholtz
Michael tries to make Cameron feel at home at the school. He does everything with the best intentions, but not a lot of people appreciate it. Michael is considered a loser and other students pick on him all the time. He just lets it happen and knows he will never be the most popular kid in the school.

Mandella
Played by: Susan May Pratt
She's Kat's best friend. Mandella loves Shakespeare and she pictures herself in a romantic world as William S. describes it in his poems. She's very spiritual and is a little more open then her friend Kat.

Chastity
Played by: Gabrielle Union
Chastity is Bianca's best friend and even more superficial then B. She's one of those girls that wants Joey Donner and she doesn't care about anything but his looks. Chastity isn't actually a very true friend to Bianca and therefore perfect for an ass such as Joey.

Mrs. Perky
Played by: Allison Janney'
Mrs. Perky is a pretty strange teacher. She swears in front of her students and she's busy writing a novel with some pretty obscene wordchoices.

Walter Stratford
Played by: Larry Miller
He's Bianca and Kat's dad and trying to deal with his teenage daughters who are so different from each other. He is very traditional and doesn't like the fact that Bianca is so interested in boys. He only wants her to date when Kat does, but he knows she probably wouldn't. When Kat also goes on a date, he has to let Bianca go and he has to face the fact: his daughters are growing up.
