Unrealistic Movie Stereoptypes

Movies are the perfect way to escape reality. And although it IS a movie, it still bothers me that sometimes very unrealistic things happen in a movie. And there are examples that return over and over again and are now stereotypical moments in movies. I decided to list the most unrealistic movie stereotypes we just keep seeing in movies and that would definitely not happen in real life.

Hanging up the phone without saying goodbye
First of all, it’s rude. And second of all, nobody hangs up the phone and ends a phone conversation without saying goodbye. Unless you’re mad off course, but still. In movies they always do it.

Easily hacking a computer
Movies make it seem like anyone can hack into a computer, phone or security system with ease. You don’t even have to be a professional hacker or an IT-guy. Just click one button and “I’m in!” And also: the people being hacked in movies always seem to have very easy-to-guess passwords.

Male scientist Vs. female scientist
The stereotypical scientist is a mad scientist like Doc Brown in “Back to the Future”. Messy hair, babbling about theories, they look nerdy, often wear glasses. But whenever a woman is portrayed as a scientist, they look like gorgeous fashion models. And I’m not saying that female scientist in real-life are ugly, but the contrast in movies is just too big.

The ‘ugly’ girl is actually really hot
This is something your most often see in teen movies. A girl that is considered ugly, nerdy or unpopular, is mostly only wearing glasses and baggy clothes. Once they change this, all of a sudden everyone think she is hot. When all they did is take away the glasses and change her wardrobe. Talking about superficial.

Parking spot
When you live in the city, you know how hard it is to find a good parking spot. Well, not in movies. They always seem to find the perfect spot to park their car, in a big city, right in front of the building they need to be.

Waking up fresh-faced
I don’t know about you, but when I wake up I don’t look like I just came home from the salon. My hair is messy, I have pillow marks all over my face and eye boogers. The people in movies always look perfect. And also, many just jump into their clothes unwashed and without changing their underwear. That’s not just unrealistic, that’s gross.

Untouched breakfast
I only have a smoothy and some crackers for breakfast. I don’t wake up to a table with a large breakfast on it. In the movies those breakfast tables always make me jealous and they hardly touch any of the food on there. Why? It makes me mad.

Running/ walking towards the mysterious noise
In scary movies people always tend to walk or run towards a mysterious noise they just heard, whether they are in their own house, outside or in some other location. That makes no sense, especially when most of the time the people are alone and aware of all the horrific shit going on in their town. And to make it worse, they yell “hello”. If there were an actual killer, he would not respond with: Hi, it’s me, the killer”. Me, I would get the hell out of there, find a safe place and call the cops.

Agreeing to meet, without an actual place or time
“You want to go out tonight? Yes? See you then”. Said no one ever in real-life. When I set up a meeting, I want to know the exact date, place and time. In movies this is mostly all they say. And the silly thing, they never miss each other. They always meet at the right time and place. This is just stupid.

Walking away from an explosion
An action movie cliché that we see a lot is the explosion (always over-the-top). And the hero always walks away from the explosion in a very calm manner. I know you’re tough and everything, but surely that’s not how a normal person would respond to an explosion. We would probably just die.

Stopping a wedding
This is a typical thing to happen in a romcom. Someone tries to stop the marriage of the person he or she loves, in order for the love interest to leave with them. First of all, you’re interrupting a wedding. That’s something you just don’t do. And then when the bride or groom leaves the other at the altar and kisses the one who stopped the wedding, the whole crowd starts cheering. Everybody in the audience was there to see the couple they know and love get married, and then some stranger comes in and breaks it up and you have no issue with it?

Hair
Women don’t seem to grow any hair on their legs or armpits whenever they are in a desperate survival situation. And also they don’t have periods. I’d like to have that superpower.

Fancy apartments and houses
I really would like to know how they do it, but the protagonist in movies always seem to live in a fancy apartment or house they shouldn’t be able to afford in the first place.

Unlimited ammo
No matter how many bullets they fire, they never seem to run out of ammunition. But of course only at the most crucial moment. Also illogical: the bad guy always misses. A lot!

Attacking on by one
When being attacked by a large number of people, be prepared to get beat up and lose. But not when you’re in a movie. Each villain just waits their turn and they all get they asses kidded by the protagonist one at a time.

Unlocked cars
It’s really easy to steal a car in movies, since no one ever locks them. But you don’t have the car keys to start the card I hear you say. They are most likely hidden behind the sun visor. Who keeps their car keys IN the car?

Breaking through windows without consequences
I don’t know about you, but whenever you pick up a piece of broken glass you will most likely cut yourself. How is it then that whenever they jump through a window in movies, they walk away from it without any scratches. And how thin is that glass?

Fluid dialogue
Whenever an actor stumbles up on their words, they cut and restart shooting the scene. But you never see people mumble, pause or hesitate when they talk. It would be more realistic if the conversations were more realistic.

Teenagers looking like 30
It’s well-know that most teenagers cast in movies are not teens anymore. But at least cast someone that actually looks like someone who is still in high school.

Top 5 Thursday: Overused Horror Movie Clichés

I love horror movies, although some are hard to watch alone. But when I watch a horror movie, there are always some clichés that appear in almost every movie in the genre. I’m going to share with you some of the most overused horror movie clichés.

5. Inept authority figures
Somehow adult authority figures never seem to believe the one being chased. They are useless in horror movies, because when they do try to help, they often get killed.

4. Stereotypes
Especially when it involves teens, there is always the good virgin, the nice guy, the jerky jock, the stoner or nerd, the slutty chick. And it’s always predictable who dies first and who will survive.

3. Running away and falling
It’s often seen that someone (mostly women) is running away from the killer, but they can never do it without falling at least once. And not even over a branch or a rock, they just trip. Gravity seems to grab them.

2. Bad reception
The phone doesn’t work when you most need it. And this is very convenient for the killer.

1. The car doesn’t start
With cell phones not working, there is also a big problem with cars in horror movies. At the moment of truth, when someone tries to flee the killer, the car they get into doesn’t start. And most of the time it does start right before the killer can strike.

Top 5 Thursday: 2016 Summer Movies to Look Forward to

As a big movie nerd I’m also looking out for new movies. Today I’m going to share with you the five films I can’t wait to see, that will be released this summer (june/ july/ august, US release dates).

5. Ghosbusters
Okay, I’m a little skeptical. But somehow I’m still interested in seeing it, because of the great comedic actresses (and Chris Hemsworth). I hope it’s going to be funny.

4. Suicide Squad
We’ve seen a few trailers now and I get more excited after seeing a new trailer. I think this is going to a good film and I’m curious about Jaret Leto’s version of The Joker and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.

3. Jason Bourne
We don’t know that much about the new Jason Bourne film, but knowing the franchise is returning is reason enough for me to go to the theaters. I love these films and Matt Damon is fantastic in them.

2. Finding Dory
Oh how I love “Finding Nemo”. And Dory is my favorite character, so off course I’m super stoked to see a spin-off film. Can’t wait!

1. The BFG
I’m a huge fan of Roald Dahl’s children’s books. Some of them have been made into movies quite successfully. I’m very confident that Steven Spielberg created a gem with “The BFG” (The Big Friendly Giant).

Top 5 Thursday: Characters from "The Middle"

The Heck family in “The Middle” is such a fun family, that is probably more realistic then we would like to admit. I ranked the family members.

5. Sue Heck
Sue is the dorky and socially awkward middle child of Frankie and Mike. She is overemotional and is always positive. Sue’s optimism and determination are admirable and although she never gets notice for all the hard work she does, she keeps trying.

4. Axl Heck
Axl is the oldest son of the Heck family. He is mischievous and rebellious and he hates school. He is very lazy and compensates this with his looks, popularity and athletics.

3. Mike Heck
Mike is the father of the family. He is tall, blunt and sometimes even a bit boring. Mike is the manager of a quarry and is known for his straight-forward, practical attitude. He never shows his emotions.

2. Frankie Heck
Frankie is the mother of the family. She is short and a stressed wife and mother. Frankie is very strict as a mother and always means well with her kids, who she is always struggling with.

1. Brick Heck
Brick is the youngest child of Frankie and Mike. He loves to read and has quirks or habits or whispering to himself. This happens when certain words catch this ear and he wants to hear them again. Brick is exceptionally smart and tends to isolate himself from classmates.

Movie Battle: (500) Days of Summer Vs. Ruby Sparks

I’m not a very big fan of romantic comedies, unless they are a bit unconventional. The two I can think of are going to battle it out in today’s movie battle: “(500) Days of Summer” Vs. “Ruby Sparks”

ACTORS

(500) Days of Summer: This was one of the films that brought us back Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who is now one of the more successful actors in Hollywood. Together with Zooey Deschanel he forms an amazing couple. Their performances are amazing.

Ruby Sparks: Paul Dano is an extraordinary actor, I really like him. He does a great job in “Ruby Sparks”. And Zoe Kazan, as Ruby Sparks, is amazing! Fun supporting roles by Annette Bening, Antonio Banderas, Chris Messina and Steve Coogan.

STORY

(500) Days of Summer: When Tom meets Summer, he falls far her immediately. Summer doesn’t believe true love exists, Tom does. We see the 500 days Summer is in Tom’s life. It sounds like your average rom com, but it’s anything but that.

Ruby Sparks: The story doesn’t sound straight forward and isn’t. It’s about a struggling writer, who writes about a woman who can love him and actually coming to life. It’s an original story (written by Zoe Kazan) and executed very well.

EFFECTS

(500) Days of Summer: The cinematography of “(500) Days of Summer” is magnificent. First off, the story isn’t told chronologically, but there are also some great effects used. Like the split screen, where we see Tom’s expectations and reality of a moment.

Ruby Sparks: The film looks beautiful, but more straight forward then “(500) Days of Summer”.

WINNER

Although I really loved “Ruby Sparks”, “(500) Days of Summer” has been one of my all-time favorites ever since I first saw it

Top 5 Thursday: Movies I Watched for My Challenge (March 2016)

This month I saw some really good film, some that really surprised me and some I knew I was going to love. Besides “Sharknado” I didn’t really see anything terrible in March. Here are my five favorite films I watched for my challenge this month.

5. Frank
It’s unconventional and weird, yet fun and fantastic. “Frank” is not your everyday movie, but sometimes I like it. Just open up your mind and give it a try.

4. All is Lost
“All is Lost” has almost no dialogue and only one actor in the entire film. How is that interesting, right? Well, Robert Redford and director J.C. Chandor made it happen. It’s a beautiful film, that keeps your attention the entire runtime.

3. 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days
Such a simple film, but so very powerful. Sometimes a movie from a foreign country you don’t know much about can totally leave you speechless.

2. This is Where I Leave You
I always love film about dysfunctional families. “This is Where I Leave You” is a good dramedy, strong cast and relatable storylines. It really surprised me.

1. Room
I was excited for “Room” and I got exactly what I was hoping for. What an amazing film, with great performances. This film really grabbed me and I loved everything about it.

Top 5 Thursday: Songs from Disney Movies

Like almost everyone I love Disney and everything associated with Disney. I’m not ashamed of it either. But what I love most is probably the songs and I sing the out loud. Preferably by myself, really loud, when I know my neighbours aren’t home! And of all the great songs Disney has produced over the years, I wanted to make a selection of my favorites. Here are my five favorite Disney songs.

5. That’s How You Know (Enchanted)
This song is ridiculously catchy, a song you can’t get out of your head once you hear it. And it’s so fun. I just want to burst into song myself!

4. Look Through My Eyes (Brother Bear)
“Brother Bear” might not be one of the most popular and most well-known Disney films, but it has always been one of my favorites. And Phil Collins did the music. Collins is probably more known for the music he wrote for Disney’s “Tarzan”, but I prefer this one from “Brother Bear”.

3. Colors of the Wind (Pocahontas)
“Pocahontas” is not one of my favorites, but this song is so beautiful. This is what the films is known for. It shows Pocahontas’ love for nature.

2. Belle (Beauty & the Beast)
Most people will pick “Be Our Guest” or “Beauty and the Beast”, but “Belle has always been my favorite song from "Beauty and the Beast", it gets you in the mood for the rest of the film.

1. Circle of Life (The Lion King)
I remember seeing “The Lion King” for the first time, in the cinema. I was totally speechless when, when that sun came up and “Circle of Life” started. The best Disney song ever, I think we can all agree!

They Almost Made the Top 5: Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (Mary Poppins), Be Our Guest (Beauty & the Beast), Under the Sea (The Little Mermaid), I Wanna Be Like You (Jungle Book), Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo (Cinderella), You’ve Got a Friend in Me (Toy Story), Beauty & the Beast (Beauty & the Beast), Let It Go (Frozen), Once Upon a Dream (Sleeping Beauty), Reflection (Mulan), Man or Muppet (The Muppets), Cruella De Vil (101 Dalmatians), Bare Necessities (Jungle Book), You’ll Be In My Heart (Tarzan), On My Way (Brother Bear)

Best & Worst: Bruce Willis

A lot of people don’t consider Bruce Willis a good actor, but I think he has proven many times that he is very good indeed. He is actually one of my favorites, not only in action movies. I enjoy his movies, his performances and he has done some really good movies. Here are my best and worst pick.

His most memorable movie and character! When I think of Bruce Willis and when I have to name one action movie, “Die Hard” is the one. The best he made and my favorite. Probably not the most surprising choice.
Honorable Mentions: “Sin City”, “Die Hard with a Vengeance”, “Moonrise Kingdom”, “The Sixth Sense”, “Unbreakable”, “Pulp Fiction”, “Twelve Monkeys”, “The Fifth Element”, “Looper”

The one that made him famous was “Die Hard, but this fifth instalment was what killed the franchise. This movie is so bad, John McClane doesn’t even get into a fight here. It’s terrible! And the bad guy is tap dancing while eating a carrot. Well….. It sucks.
Dishonorable Mentions: "Hudson Hawk", "Charlie Angels: Full Throttle", "Color of Night", "Mortal Thoughts"

Top 5 Thursday: Movies I Watched for My Challenge (February 2016)

I have to say, I didn’t see a lot of new movies this month. But I did see some movie that have a chance of ending up on my end year’s list for this challenge or best films of 2016. Here are the five best movies I watched in February for my challenge.

5. Robin Hood
I’ve always been fascinated by the character of Robin Hood and there are so many different versions of this old story. Off course the Kevin Costner version, which holds a special place in my heart. But Disney’s take on the hero is amazing! I loved “Robin Hood”.

4. Deadpool
It was way funnier than I initially thought it would be and Ryan Reynolds is great in “Deadpool”. I love the self-mockery. It’s a nice variety in the superhero movie universe, it separates itself from the other films in the genre.

3. Galaxy Quest
I’m so glad I finally got to see “Galaxy Quest”. It was so funny! And I loved Alan Rickman in this film. Such a different role for him, yet so perfect.

2. The Revenant
Amazing movie. I wanted to see this movie for a long time and it didn’t disappoint. Fantastic cinematography and great acting.

1. Spotlight
This movie amazed me, shocked me, interested me, grabbed me, gave me chills, captivated me. It did all that! And Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams are very good in it too.

Top 5 Thursday: Characters from "The Hunger Games" Series

I love “The Hunger Games” books and the movies. I wanted to take a look at the characters and rank them. Here are my five favorite characters from “The Hunger Games” franchise.

5. Johanna Mason
Johanna Mason won the Hunger Games for District 7, when she pretended to be a weakling. When only a few tributes were left, she showed her true skills. Johanna was send to the Quarter Quell to protect Katniss.

4. Haymitch Abernathy
Haymitch is Katniss and Peeta’s mentor in the preparation of the Hunger Games. He won the games himself ones, he was the first winner for District 12. Haymitch is a drunk cynic and he doesn’t have faith in Katniss at first.

3. Beetee Latier
Beetee doesn’t look like the biggest threat, but his intelligence is something to watch out for. He is very skilled with a wire, which eventually saves him and his allys in the Quarter Quell.

2. Finnick Odair
Finnick was the winner of the 65th Hunger Games and the youngest ever to win. Katniss was hesitant to make Finnick her ally in the Quarter Quell, but he proved to be valuable. Finnick is a key person in the rebellion.

1. Katniss Everdeen
Off course Katniss, she is every girls heroine. Katniss doesn’t want to be a hero though, she just wants to survive these awful games. She is very loyal to her family and friends and often fights for them instead of herself.

Top 5 Thursday: Fargo Season 1 Characters

I just binge watched the first season of the Netflix show “Fargo” and I loved it. The perfect time to make a top 5 dedicated to this show. So, I made a top 5 of my favorite characters from the first season of “Fargo”.

5. Lou Solverson
Lou is Molly’s father and owns a diner. He was once a cop too, just like his daughter. He seems pretty happy with his job now and always looks out for Molly. He is afraid that something might happen to her, because it’s such a dangerous job.

4. Gus Grimly
Gus is a cop, but it’s not his dream job. He actually always wanted to be a mailman. Gus is somewhat clumsy and not very persuasive as a police officer. He is such a sweet man, perfect for Molly.

3. Lester Nygaard
Lester looks like you’re average neighbor. But he is nothing more than a liar. And he makes up lie after lie after lie. You have to hand it to him, he is pretty creative with his cover up. But we all know that the truth will be revealed somehow.

2. Lorne Malvo
Okay, he’s not a nice character. He is a killer, a cold blooded and relentless killer. But he is such an interesting character and he is portrayed perfectly by Billy Bob Thornton.

1. Molly Solverson
Don’t send a woman to do a man’s job? Well, this female deputy is the only one doing her job well. The murder case is keeping her awake at night and she doesn’t rest until the right man is behind bars.

They Almost Made the Top 5: Bill Oswalt
