10s Movie Review - The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Director:
Francis Lawrence
Genre: Science Fiction/ Action/ Drama/ Dystopian
Runtime: 146 minutes
Year: 2013
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks, Donald Sutherland, Stanley Tucci, Toby Jones, Sam Claflin,, Jeffrey Wright, Amanda Plummer, Jena Malone, Philip Seymour Hoffman

Description: Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) become targets of the Capitol after their victory in the 74th Hunger Games sparks a rebellion in the Districts of Panem.

Review: The first film in “The Hunger Games” franchise was a huge success and was really good. The second movie gets a new director, Gary Ross steps down and makes room for Francis Lawrence.
Instead of getting in to the action right away, Lawrence takes time to look back on the happenings from the first film. The surprising climax of the 74th Hunger Games has changed a lot and it’s not over for Katniss and Peeta just yet. Together they have to visit all the districts for a victory tour, something they both don’t like doing. The people love Katniss and president Snow is anything but happy about it.

Plutarch Heavensbee is the new game maker and decides to make the 75th Hunger Games into something unforgettable. Together with president Snow they decide to let former winners from each district fight it out in the arena. Because Katniss is the only female winner from district 12, she has to enter. And Peeta joins her again, when he volunteers after Haymitch was chosen.

“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” is a case of bigger and better. But also visually it brings us more. No shaky cam here, which make the actions scenes even better. And the new arena brings a lot more variation and new dangers. The story is very true to its source material.

It takes some time before the actual battle starts, but the movie never bores. This is also a big thank you to Jennifer Lawrence, who shines once again as Katniss. A tough heroine, who can also be vulnerable and it’s easy to identify with her. This franchise separates itself from other young adult films that were based on books. The film also adds some great new characters, like Finnick, Beetee, Plutarch and Johanna.

“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” was already my favorite book in the series, it’s a fantastic film as well.

TV Show Review - Daisy Jones & the Six

Season:
Mini Series
Genre: Drama/ Music/ Romance
Number of episodes: 10
Year: 2023
Starring: Riley Keogh, Sam Claflin, Camila Morrone, Suki Waterhouse, Will Harrison, Josh Whitehouse, Sebastian Chacon, Nabiyah Be, Tom Wright, Timothy Olyphant

Description: Following the rise of rock band Daisy Jones and the Six through the 1970s Los Angeles music on their quest for worldwide icon status.

Review: Based on the book of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reid, “Daisy Jones & the Six” focuses on the rise and fall of a rock band in 1970s Los Angeles. The book is an absolute favorite of mine and I was so happy to see it come to life. The book is still better, but I highly enjoyed the TV series.

The book is in interview form, the series is set up as a retrospective documentary. While being interviewed, the band looks back at how they started. The setting is amazing, the sound, the wardrobe, the hair, the vibes, it’s aals present. The band is somewhat modeled after Fleetwood Mac, around the time they made their album “Rumours”. The serie’s “Rumours” is called “Aurora”.

Riley Keough and Sam Claflin play the two lead singers of the band, Daisy Jones and Billy Dunne. They both portray their respective roles wonderfully. Claflin is charismatic, the cool rock star with a sensitive edge. But Daisy Jones is really the magnetic centerpiece here. Keigh, who is Elvis Presley’s eldest granddaughter and daughter of Lisa Marie Presley. She is a joy the watch. Daisy Jones is confident, independent, strong, but also fragile and a little broken. And both of them have a great voice.
As many book to movie/ TV series adaptations, there are a lot of differences. I really liked how Camila, Billy’s wife, got a more prominent role and she was actually one of my favorite characters. In the book she wasn’t. I also enjoyed Simone’s story, how they added that in the show. She played an important role in Daisy’s life in the book as well, but they give her more to do in the TV series.

What I didn’t like was the role of Karen. Pianist Karen was my favorite character in the book. A woman who knows what she wants, trying to keep her head above water in a man’s world, constantly having to prove her worth and fighting for her place in the music world. I love how confident she was I the book, how Karen said it like she saw it and she was never inferior to the men. Karen disappeared a bit into the background, her as a band member and woman. The show does focus on her relationship with fellow band member Graham, Billy’s brother. And that’s fine. But I wanted more of the person Karen. We hardly get to know her here.

The thing that bothered me the most was the “The Six” didn’t have six band members. Pete, a character in the book, is not in the series. They simply count Camila as their sixth band member. But I really hated that. Pete didn’t have a huge role in the book, he was barely in it. But calling a band with five band members “The Six” is pretty lame.

Because it’s a story about a band, there needs to be music. And Taylor Jenkins Reid did a great job describing all the songs on the album “Aurora”, what their vibe is, their meaning, what you’re supposed to feel, what they represent. We were finally going to hear the songs. And “Aurora” is an actual album which you can listen to on Spotify. “Look at Us Now (Honeycomb)” is definitely the song with the biggest impact.

Despite the series having two changes I hated, I did really love this show. And listening to the album, makes the book even better.

20s Movie Review - Love Wedding Repeat

Director:
Dean Craig
Genre: Comedy/ Romance
Runtime: 100 minutes
Year: 2020
Starring: Sam Claflin, Olivia Munn, Freida Pinto, Joel Fry, Eleanor Tomlinson, Jack Farthing, Tim Key, Allan Mustafa, Aisling Bea

Description: While trying to make his sister’s (Eleanor Tomlinson) wedding day go smoothly, Jack (Sam Claflin) finds himself juggling an angry ex-girlfriend (Freida Pinto), an uninvited guest (Jack Farthing) with a secret, a misplaced sleep sedative, and the girl who got away (Olivia Munn) in alternate versions of the same day.

I WATCHED THIS MOVIE FOR MY 2023 MOVIE CHALLENGE.
WEEK 10: A BRITISH COMEDY

Review: Chance can be an asshole. That’s what the voice-over states. In “Love Wedding Repeat”, everything revolves around chance and the capricious twist of fate. Table arrangements at a wedding turn out to be vital. Only one arrangement has a positive outcome for all the guest, but which one? Fortunately, after a big mistake, the characters just get to try again.

The concept sounds like a lot of fun, but “Love Wedding Repeat” makes almost no use of the concept of cyclical time. Director Dean Craig stupidly chops his romcom about parallel universes into two parts: in the first part of the film, the wedding goes disastrously, in the second part, everything goes completely according to plan.

Unfortunately, there is a very big drawback to this setup. Jack, the main character, is completely unaware that alternate realities exist. And because he lacks this knowledge, he will therefore not try to influence the course of his own future (or that of others). A missed opportunity, because the self-repeating caus-and-effect gam is precisely what makes a “time loop” movie, like for example “Groundhog Day” or “Edge of Tomorrow”, so entertaining.

A whole battalion of idiotic characters are assembled for the wedding ceremony. Jealous exes, a cocaine head, a sleepy maid of honor, and a chatty man in a kilt who is very itchy. They are meant to make you laugh, but they don’t manage. “Love Wedding Repeat” is rarely truly funny, yet many of the situations are very uncomfortable to watch.

They could have done so many great things with this premise, yet they totally missed the mark. Shame, because with talented performers like Sam Claflin and Freida Pinto, it could have been a lot better.

20s Movie Review - Last Night in Soho

Director:
Edgar Wright
Genre: Drama/ Horror/ Mystery
Runtime: 118 minutes
Year: 2021
Starring: Thomasin McKenzie, Anya Taylor-Joy, Matt Smith, Diana Rigg, Terence Stamp, Sam Claflin

Description: An aspiring fashion designer (Thomasin McKenzie) is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s where she encounters a dazzling wannabe singer (Anya Taylor-Joy). But the glamour is not all it appears to be and the dreams of the past start to crack and splinter into something darker.

WEEK 16: A MOVIE STARRING AN ACTOR/ACTRESS WHO IS NO LONGER ALIVE

Review: If only she had lived in the 1960s, Eloise knows. She is about to movie to London to study to be a fashion designer. Her grandmother wasn’t Eloise, that London can be a bit much.

Once in the capital, things soon turn out not to be what she expected. Soon she disappears at night in her dreams to the London of the 1960s. She puts herself in the shoes of Sandie, a young woman who wants to become a famous singer. But are they really dreams, or does she really go through time? With a director like Edgar Wright, the cinematic bag of tricks is open and what you get is a stylish affair.

Take for example a, at first sight, simple romantic dance scene between Sandie and the charismatic talent scout Jack. One moment we see he has Sandie in his arms, ant then he’s spinning Eloise around. When Sandie passes a mirror, we see Eloise in it. Something that flows together so well, takes some insane planning skills. On a story level, Wright always stuffs his films full of hints, rewarding re-watching double-time.

It's a very different film from Wright, because the humor that we are used from his earlier work, is completely absent here. It’s a serious film with horror elements. And I praise Wright for exploring different genres, because he did an amazing job, yet again.

Thomasin Mackenzie plays Eloise and starts strongly as a grey mouse who is out of place. Later in the film she has Anya Taylor-Joy opposite her, who plays Sandie, and together they must portray a band. Both women portray their characters very well.

Edgar Wright’s take on a serious horror works very well and I’m super impressed. This shows again why he is one of my favorite directors

10s Movie Review - Love, Rosie

Director:
Christian Ditter
Genre: Romance/ Comedy/ Dram
Runtime: 103 minutes
Year: 2014
Starring: Lily Collins, Sam Claflin, Christian Cooke, Jaime Winstne, Suki Waterhouse, Tamsin Egerton, Jamie Beamish, Lorcan Cranitch, Ger Ryan, Lily Laight, Matthew Dillon, Rosa Molloy, Sadbh Malin, Nick Lee, Damien Devaney

I WATCHED THIS MOVIE FOR MY 2021 MOVIE CHALLENGE.
WEEK 23: A ROMCOM

Description: Rosie (Lily Collins) and Alex (Sam Claflin) have been best friends since they were 5, so they couldn’t possibly be right for another… or could they? When it comes to love, life and making the right choices, these two are their own worst enemies.

Review: It’s a truism: romantic comedies don’t have the most unexpected endings or particularly original entanglements. The genre almost always has the charismatic setback so that it all seems to go wrong and the lovebirds will be sitting there all alone. Or with someone they aren’t meant to be with. Everything depends on the interpretation of the romcom. In that respect, “Love, Rosie” is just right. Because if they didn’t get it right, it would be yet another cliché romcom. Because it’s not easy to watch two people who are made for each other endlessly revolve around each other for over hundred minutes, without admitting they love each other.
The fact that Rosie and her best friend Alex, whom she has known since she was five, will eventually get together is almost a certainty. You can’t imagine fate and a lot of misunderstandings and wrongly chosen moments ensure that the two friends take a different path in their lives and then end up back together. It’s what happens to both of them over a course of 12 years.
The moments in the lives of Rosie and Alex are entertaining, at times frustrating to the bone, and above all, a succession of fatal misfortune. However, it is brought with great nuance and embedded in realistic situations. When Alex is about to travel to the States to study there, it’s unthinkable that his heartfelt friend won’t allow him. But Rosie stays home and Alex hooks up with  a graceful American with whom things get very serious. Rosie only has to take one look at the couple during a visit to see that Alex’ relationship is doomed to fail. She doesn’t look for the cause in herself, but is simply sure that her best friend deserves better.
“Love, Rosie” benefits from the appealing interaction between lead actors Sam Claflin and Lily Collins. The number of side characters is kept to a minimum and the film focuses on Alex and Rosie.
I’m not the biggest fan of romcoms, but I really loved this film. “Love Rosie” is not about whether Rosie and Alex will fall into each other’s arms, but about how.

Movie Reviews - Enola Holmes

Director:
Harry Bradbeer

Genre: Drama/ Crime/ Adventure

Runtime: 123 minutes

Year: 2020

Starring: Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavill, Sam Claflin, Helena Bonham Carter, Louis Partridge

Description: When Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown), Sherlock’s (Henry Cavill) teen sister, discovers her mother (Helena Bonham Carter) missing, she sets off to find her, becoming a super-sleuth in her own right as she outwits her famous brother and unravels a dangerous conspiracy around a mysterious young lord (Louis Partridge)

Review: Forget Sherlock Holmes and meet Enola, the teenage sister of the world’s most famous detective. Equally resourceful and quirky, but spicier and more rebellious then her big brother. In “Enola Holmes”, the young detective takes matters into her own hands to track down her missing mother. For this she travels through Victorian England, a time when many people didn’t care much for types like Enola who went against traditional customs. Because, change is so difficult. Fortunately, director Harry Bradbeer and “Enola Holmes” provide the ultimate proof that a new interpretation o the familiar can a welcome relief.

In this revisionist twist on the classic detective stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock and Mycroft are pushed to the sidelines and take the lead in tracking down their mother after she is nowhere to be found. But before Enola can start her search, she has to get rid of her brothers. They want to send her to a boarding school to become a real lady, but Enola doesn’t feel like it.

“Enola Holmes” is set in Victorian England, where a battle for great reforms was going in, but women were still hoisted into tight corsets against their will. But Enola decides to chose her own path, instead of others doing it for her.

Enola leaves for London, the height of civilization. Her mother left some clues. On the train, her path crosses with that of Lord Tewksbury, a young marquis who is the target of a murder conspiracy. The two soon develop a bond.

Millie Bobby Brown manages to bring the young heroine from Nancy Springer’s books to life in an energetic and charming way. Enola frequently breaks the fourth wall for a chat with the audience and this was a fun touch. Brown’s witty and comical comments provide the film with a fine playful atmosphere that distinguishes it from the stories about her stoic brother.

The detective work of Sherlock’s female counterpart is less strong and intriguing and not typical Holmes-like as that of her big brother. Enola is more busy deciphering her mothers encrypted messages than solving larger puzzles. As a result, the mysteries to be unraveled never really become very exciting or compelling. Fortunately, the great action scenes make up for this and the great casting of Milly Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill as Sherlock Holmes is also a plus. I just can’t get over the fact how handsome Cavill is in this film and somehow also kind of perfect for the role of Sherlock Holmes.

“Enola Holmes” is a fun contemporary interpretation of a genre previously dominated by men. It’s a highly enjoyable film and definitely a fun adventure. Hopefully more will follow.

TV Show Review - Peaky Blinders (Season 5)

Season: 5
Genre: Thriller/ Drama/ Crime
Number of episodes: 6
Year: 2019
Starring: Cillian Murphy, Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson, Sophie Rundle, Joe Cole, Tom Hardy, Sam Claflin, Natasha O’Keefe, Packy Lee, Finn Cole, Kate Phillips, Aidan Gillen

Description: In the wake of the Wall Street Crash, Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) faces new dangers from unexpected quarters.

Review: The fifth season of “Peaky Blinders” is one to remember. In these six episodes, we see Thomas Shelby slowly slide down, barely sleeping and his alcohol and drug abuse is excessively high. And brother Arthur also gets deeper into misery.
This season mainly evolves around those two, where Polly plays the incredible role of the dame that can not be messed with. The Peaky Blinders, and Tommy especially, are attacked from all corners. Danger is everywhere, even within their own group.
Tommy is ambitious. He becomes a member of the parliament, proofs to be an outstanding spokesman and stands out. But there is another man that does this: Oswald Mosley. He is the devil himself and he easily gives viewers chills. We see the rise of his fascism.
Tommy wants to do something good for a change, but will he succeed? The wives of Tommy, Arthur and Michael all play an important role, besides Polly, in this fifth season. The downward spiral that starts in the first episode, eventually becomes a slide which seemingly has no end. The story is well told and all actors have become their characters, which make them extremely believable and somewhat frightening.
The last three episodes are all some to look forward to, but that final episode will leave you breathless. With an ending that will make you want more. Season 5 of “Peaky Blinders” is one of the best. Especially for the character of Tommy Shelby: we see his demolition as a leader, husband, father, brother, but most of all as a man. That downward spiral will definitely be something to build on in the next season.
“Peaky Blinders”, after 5 seasons still a show that manages to make their characters vulnerable and touches you as an audience.

100 Movie Challenge 2017 - # 43: Me Before You

Director: Thea Sharrock
Genre: Drama/ Romance
Runtime: 110 minutes
Year: 2016
Starring: Emilia Clarke, Sam Claflin, Matthew Lewis, Stephen Peacocke, Charles Dance, Jenna Coleman, Brendan Coyle

Description: A girl (Emilia Clarke) in a small town forms an unlikely bond with a recently-paralyzed man (Sam Claflin) she's taking care of.

Review: In “Me Before You”, Emilia Clarke plays Louisa Clark, Lou for short. She is a 26 year old with a love for a colorful wardrobe and no ambitions. She still lives with her parents and gets silly job to support them. When she gets fired from the café she works at, she needs to find a new job. Lou gets a job as caregiver of the paralyzed Will Traynor, a young man that is the complete opposite of Lou. Before the injury, he was a successful banker and lived life to the fullest. When he gets hit by a motorcycle and ends up in wheelchair for life, the ambitious man changes into a bitter and unhappy man. Lou is supposed to makes his life a bit more bearable. At first, they don’t really get along, but the two eventually form an unbreakable bond.
“Me Before You” deals with some really heavy themes, but the screenplay keeps it light. The focus is on the connection between Lou and Will. Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin have perfect chemistry.
Although this movie doesn’t get the best reviews, I’m for once not going to be influenced by that. I loved “Me Before You”, I loved Clarke and Claflin. And one tip: keep the tissues near.

100 Movie Challenge 2016 - # 51: The Huntsman: Winter's War

Director: Cedic Nicolas-Troyan
Genre: Adventure/ Action/ Fantasy/ Drama
Runtime: 114 minutes
Year: 2016
Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Jessica Chastain, Emily Blunt, Charlize Theron, Nick Frost, Sam Claflin

Description: As a war between rival queen sisters Ravenna (Charlize Theron) and Freya (Emily Blunt) escalates, Eric (Chris Hemsworth) and fellow warrior Sara (Jessica Chastain), members of the Huntsmen army raised to protect Freya, try to conceal their forbidden love as they combat Ravenna's wicked intentions.

Review: “Snow White and the Huntsman” was four years ago successful enough that Universal was already planning a sequel. Rupert Sanders was going to direct and Kristen Stewart was going to star again. Because of an affaire between the two, that sequel was postponed. They still wanted to continue the franchise and they decided to make a spin-off focusing on huntsman Eric. Chris Hemsworth is an actor people love to see and who needs Snow White?
Because the huntsman wasn’t a very meaningful character in the original fairytale, we also get an evil ice queen and queen Ravenna returns. Snow White’s absence is solved by setting the story in a different fantasy world. The story is set before and after Snow White’s kingdom and they told it in a way we don’t need to see the actual character.
First we see the history of ice queen Freya and her sister Ravenna. And then we are introduced to the Huntsman Eric and warrior Sara. Freya trains an army of children to become huntsmen. Eric and Sara are her best warriors. The two fall in love, which is a sin in Freya’s kingdom. Sara is killed and Eric is supposed to die too. He survives and escape to the south. Then we skip to seven years later after all the happenings in “Snow White and the Huntsman”. Eric has to find Ravenna’s mirror, before Freay gets her hands on it.
Chris Hemsworth doesn’t have to do a lot to entertain me and I liked him in “The Huntsman: Winter’s War”. He had good chemistry with Jessica Chastain and her character is strong and fun. Emily Blunt is a believable evil queen and although Charlize Theron already proved that, she does a solid job again.
Is “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” a great film? No, but it’s very entertaining, has the right length, it looks stunning and has a good cast. I have to honest that I expected a bit more, but it’s still an enjoyable film.

Top 5 Thursday: Characters from "The Hunger Games" Series

I love “The Hunger Games” books and the movies. I wanted to take a look at the characters and rank them. Here are my five favorite characters from “The Hunger Games” franchise.

5. Johanna Mason
Johanna Mason won the Hunger Games for District 7, when she pretended to be a weakling. When only a few tributes were left, she showed her true skills. Johanna was send to the Quarter Quell to protect Katniss.

4. Haymitch Abernathy
Haymitch is Katniss and Peeta’s mentor in the preparation of the Hunger Games. He won the games himself ones, he was the first winner for District 12. Haymitch is a drunk cynic and he doesn’t have faith in Katniss at first.

3. Beetee Latier
Beetee doesn’t look like the biggest threat, but his intelligence is something to watch out for. He is very skilled with a wire, which eventually saves him and his allys in the Quarter Quell.

2. Finnick Odair
Finnick was the winner of the 65th Hunger Games and the youngest ever to win. Katniss was hesitant to make Finnick her ally in the Quarter Quell, but he proved to be valuable. Finnick is a key person in the rebellion.

1. Katniss Everdeen
Off course Katniss, she is every girls heroine. Katniss doesn’t want to be a hero though, she just wants to survive these awful games. She is very loyal to her family and friends and often fights for them instead of herself.

They Almost Made the Top 5: Cinna, Rue, Effie Trinkett, Gale Hawthorne, Plutarch Heavensbee, Mags

100 Movie Challenge 2015 - # 151: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2

Director: Francis Lawrence
Genre: Action/ Adventure/ Science Fiction
Runtime: 136 minutes
Year: 2015
Starring: Jennfier Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Donald Sutherland, Philip Seymour, Julianne Moore, Willow Shields, Sam Claflin, Elizabeth Banks, Jena Malone, Jeffrey Wright, Stanely Tucci, Natalie Dormer, Evan Ross

Description: As the war of Panem escalates to the destruction of other districts by the Capitol, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), the reluctant leader of the rebellion, must bring together an army against President Snow (Donald Sutherland), while all she holds dear hangs in the balance.

Review: In a world filled with young adult series it’s not easy to be above average and to stand out. “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2” has succeeded. It’s a strong concept and a top cast and “The Hunger Games” gets an amazing final act.
“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1” got mixed reviews and wasn’t received well overall. It was a bit tame, lack of action, but I liked it. It was a build up to the second part and I always said the first part would be appreciated more if part two came out. “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2” is amazing!
Katniss Everdeen is recovering from an attack from brainwashed Peeta and all she wants is revenge on President Snow. She doesn’t want to do just what rebel leader Alma Coin has planned for her. Katniss gets an elite team, with Gale, Finnick and Peeta, but also some new faces. Together they storm the Capitol, which is filled with booby-traps.
It takes a bit of time before “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2” really gets going, but then the spectacles breaks loose. This is probably the most violent one of the franchise and the darkest of the four.
You could say that, after the satisfying climax of the film, the movie goes on a bit too long. Everything has to come to an end and I was pleased with that part as well. “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2” has a lot to love.
Jennifer Lawrence is fantastic again as Katniss. She is probably one of the most successful actresses of her generation. And the rest of the cast does great too, even if some have somewhat limited screen time.
“The Hunger Games” series takes its audience seriously and I wish there were more movie series as good as this. “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2” is a worthy goodbye to the franchise and definitely a great film.

In the Picture: The Characters from "Snow White and the Huntsman"

When he meets Snow White, that changes.
