WEEK 49: A MOVIE ABOUT A MUSICIAN

Review: It’s 1973. Fifteen-year-old William Miller lives in San Diego and dreams of becoming the best rock journalist ever. His great love of music was born from a collection of records his sister left him four years earlier when she left home. William writes articles for local magazines and also sends them to a rock and roll magazine. The editor of this magazine, Lester Bangs, is in San Diego and William seeks him out. He manages to get an assignment from Lester to write about Black Sabbath who are performing in San Diego. When William is trying to get in, he meets a few groupies, including the mysterious Penny Lane. Moments later, Stillwater’s band members arrive. Partly because of his contact with Penny, William gets in touch with this band, who actually, because he is a journalist, consider him the enemy.

Some time later, William is approached by Rolling Stone Magazine, to write an extensive tour report of Stillwater. And so William, leaving behind a very distressed mother, travels with the band along with Penny.

“Almost Famous” a good film about music. The film describes director Cameron Crowe’s own life as a rock journalist and he says that this film is a love letter to music. Even though the film isn’t very realistic, it does have many layers. The search for success and happiness, the loss of youthful innocence, it’s about love and passion.

“Almost Famous” is considered to be one of the best film of 2000. I personally wouldn’t go that far, but it’s strong enough to be memorable.

00s Movie Review - Finding Forrester

I WATCHED THIS MOVIE FOR MY 2021 MOVIE CHALLENGE.
WEEK 35: A MOVIE WITH YELLOW POSTER ART

Review: Gus van Sant is know for his movie “Good Will Hunting”, a film that turned out to be a huge success in 1997. “Finding Forrester is perhaps less well known that “Good Will Hunting”, but definitely at least as good.
Jamal Wallace is black teenager who lives in the Bronx. Although he’s just getting by in school his test scores tell differently. Because he is much smarter and talented then he shows everyone. Jamal gets the opportunity to go to a private school, with a scholarship, since he is also a good basketball player. The professors think that Jamal only got in to the prestigious school because he plays basketball. In the meantime, Jamal befriends an elderly man, author William Forrester who has been living in isolation for years. William helps Jamal with his writing and discovers that he is a very gifted writer.
Sean Connery and Rob Brown really work well together. They are each other’s opposites and therefore learn a lot from each other. Jamal is an optimist, he is curious and opinionated, while William is stern and pessimistic. Not to mention the difference in age.
The story is very inspiring and I love the friendship that grows between the two, who you would never pair up together if you see them passing by on the street. It’s a touching story and it’s sad that “Finding Forrester” is such an overlooked film.

Movie Review - The Irishman

Director: Martin Scorsese
Genre: Drama/ Crime
Runtime: 208 minutes
Year: 2019
Starring: Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Stephen Graham, Jesse Plemons, Bobby Canavale, Harvey Keitel, Anna Paquin, Ray Romano

Description: A mob hitman (Robert De Niro) recalls his possible involvement with the slaying of Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino).

Review: Martin Scorsese devotes three and a half hours to explaining the life story of mafia and trade unionist Frank Sheeran, nicknamed The Irishman. Despite the somewhat episodic approach of action, counteraction and retaliation, time flies by. So don’t the runtime scare you off, because it’s worth your time!
In his beautifully photographed true story, Scorsese and his scriptwriter Steven Zaillian make use of a complex, but natural double frame story in which Sheeran has to drive the mafioso Russell Bufalino to Detroit. During the many smoke breaks of their two wives present, Scorsese looks back on Sheeran's career at Bufalino's family. The whole thing is cast in the story of a very old Sheeran who looks back at the past against an invisible interviewer in the nursing home.
Central to the story, but only inserted later in the story, is Sheeran's involvement in the death of the criminal trade union boss Hoffa, who maintained ties with the mafia. Whether Sheeran actually had something to do with it remains shrouded in mystery, but if we are to believe the book “I Heard You Paint Houses” by former policeman and justice officer Charles Brandt, this was beyond dispute. What preceded it was a detailed account of Sheeran's criminal achievements.
After the war he was a truck driver for a meat company and after a defective truck accidentally came into contact with the charismatic but criminal Bufalino. Soon the Irishman became the regular meat provider for the mafioso with whom Bufalino had dealings. What followed is the first job and that went from bad to worse. Sheeran became a confidant of the family and his hands became increasingly dirty. The viewer has to experience for himself how he finally made it to a trade union receipt, if only because it illustrates how Scorsese manages to bring the most far-reaching developments to the fore in an extremely natural way.
What The Irishman has in common with the many high quality people enjoyed (in which Scorsese himself also made a big contribution) is the extremely sophisticated way in which the criminal environment is portrayed. Close family ties prevail, but treason is punishable by death. There is an unwritten hierarchy and Sheeran slowly but surely manages to climb up through his faithful character.
The cast is amazing. Both Al Pacino and Robert De Niro have been in a lot of questionable movies over the past years, but this is the setting they belong in. Pacino has the honor to run off with the most comic one-liners. Like the slick union leader Jimmy Hoffa, Pacino is the star of the show. He provides the much-needed comic note in the brutal waves of violence. And De Niro is more solid than he has been for a long time. The fact that Joe Pesci is probably retired now and he returned for this film, is a godsend. He plays a spider in the web of a complicated and intriguing and extremely political organization, but does not put himself in the foreground. He is often the declarant for De Niro and in my opinion the best part of the film.
We see a filmmaker and a cast at work who have more than earned theirs spurs. They can an may allow themselves complete freedom to work out a story in detail. “The Irishman” is a very strong film. If you waited for this movie and have high expectations, you will not be disappointed.

100 Movie Challenge 2016 - # 130: Trick 'r Treat

Director: Michael Dougherty
Genre: Horror/ Thriller/ Comedy/ Drama
Runtime: 82 minutes
Year: 2007
Starring: Anna Paquin, Brian Cox, Dylan Baker, Lauren Lee Smith, Quinn Lord, Moneca Delain, Tahmoh Penikett, Brett Kelly, Britt McKillip, Leslie Bibb, Isabelle Deluce, Jean-Luc Bilodeau, Alberto Chisi, Samm Todd

Description: Five interwoven stories that occur on Halloween: An everyday high school principal has a secret life as a serial killer; a college virgin might have just met the guy for her; a group of teenagers pull a mean prank; a woman who loathes the night has to contend with her holiday-obsessed husband; and a mean old man meets his match with a demonic, supernatural trick-or-treater.

Review: Halloween is the perfect setting for a horror movie. And when it comes to horror movies with this theme, there are way too many. “Trick r Treat” is surprisingly fresh, eventhough the movie never played in theaters and went direct to DVD. For real horror fans, “Trick ‘r Treat” is a favorite.
The movie follows severals stories, set during the night of Halloween: A group of young pretty girls are on their way to a party, where one of them will probably experience their ‘first time’. A chubby boy steals candy from the porch of his teacher, with major consequences. This teacher’s neighbor gets an unwanted visitor. And a group of teens wants to reveal the truth about a story they once heard about a massacre. Between all these stories we see a kid wearing a bag on his head.
The way the stories intertwine, is done very well. The movie is not predictable and is sometimes very surprising. “Trick ‘r Treat” also has humor and manages to create a scary atmosphere. The film shows the essence of Halloween: legends that are told and passed on and traditions that no one knows where they came from and why we do them. Filled with a lot of elements that horror movies need: killers, ghosts, werewolves, vampires, creepy kids and a lot fo pumpkins.

100 Movie Challenge 2016 - # 85: The Squid and the Whale

Director: Noah Baumbach
Genre: Drama/ Comedy
Runtime: 81 minutes
Year: 2005
Starring: Jeff Daniels, Laura Linney, Jesse Eisenberg, Owen Kline, William Baldwin, Anna Paquin

Description: Follows two young boys dealing with their parents' divorce in Brooklyn in the 1980s.

Review: An estranged mother and father tell their two sons they are getting a divorce. But what effect will it have on them?
It’s 1986, New York. Professor Bernard Berkman and his wife Joan have grown apart. Bernard is a brilliant man, fascinated by himself and no longer interested in his wife. That’s why Joan has had her share of affairs. The two decide to separate. Their two sons, the sixteen-year-old Walt and the four year younger Frank, are the victims. Bernard has to move into a small apartment in a bad neighborhood. Frank wants to stay with his mom, while Walt adores his dad. Walt blames his mother for everything. Everything gets more complicated when one of Bernard’s students, Lili, moves in with them and gets the interest of both Bernard and Walt. And Joan starts seeing Frank’s tennis coach.
Noah Baumback is a very intelligent film maker. Together with Wes Anderson he wrote “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou” and you see the influence of Anderson in “The Squid and the Whale”.
I somehow always enjoy films with dysfunctional families, because this way I realize how great my family is. The kids, Walt and Frank, are played very natural by Jesse Eisenberg and Owen Kline. Both are unsure about everything that is about to happen and deal with the situation in their own way. Jeff Daniels, who plays Bernard, I have always found a very underrated actor. He is really good in this film. And Laura Linney is also very strong as Joan.
Because of the great acting, the realistic happenings, the good script and the characters, this movie works well. “The Squid and the Whale” is a must-see for people who love tragic comedic family films. Fantastic film!

100 Movie Challenge 2016 - # 57: The Good Dinosaur

Director: Peter Sohn
Genre: Animation/ Adventure/ Comedy/ Fantasy
Runtime: 100 minutes
Year: 2015
Starring: Raymond Ochoa, Jeffrey Wright, Steve Zahn, A.J. Buckley, Anna Paquin, Sam Elliott, Jack Bright, Frances McDormand, Maleah Nipay-Padilla, Ryan Teeple, Jack McGraw, Marcus Scribner, Peter Sohn, Mandy Freund, Steven Clay Hunter, David Boat, Carrie Paff, Calum Grant, John Ratzenberger

Description: In a world where dinosaurs and humans live side-by-side, an Apatosaurus named Arlo (Raymond Ochoa) makes an unlikely human friend.

Review: After “Inside Out”, “The Good Dinosaur” was the second Disney Pixar film that came out in 2015. In this animation shows us the “what-if” scenario, what would have happened if the dinosaurs lived together with humans.
We meet Apatosaurus Arlo, the third child of a farminf dinosaur family. Arlo is a small, scared dinosaur. His big brother is fearless and tough and his sister is self assured and confident. Everything Arlo isn’t. When Arlo’s father wants to teach him a wise life lesson, he dad dies. When later Arlo gets lost and is far away from his family, he has to survive by himself and overcome his fears. He finds an unlikely friend in a young human boy, who he names Spot.
Director Peter Sohn and his team decided to make the dinosaurs in this animation not as realistic. It works. The surroundings on the ither hand look stunning and very life like. The story isn’t as original as we are used to from Pixar, but it’s an enjoyable film takes gives us a lot of entertainment when we travel from point A to B. The film is touching ad funny.
