Netflix Friday - Volume 44

Some Netflix film tips for the weekend! And there is something for everyone, since I picked a movie for all the different genres.
 

Action: Salt (2010)
A CIA agent (Angelina Jolie) goes on the run after a defector accuses her of being a Russian spy.
 

Drama: Flight (2012)
An airline pilot (Denzel Washington) saves almost all his passengers on his malfunctioning airliner which eventually crashed, but an investigation into the accident reveals something troubling.
 

Comedy: The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005)
Goated by his buddies, a nerdy guy (Steve Carell) who’s never “done the deed” only finds the pressure mounting when he meets a single mother (Catherine Keener).
 

Animation: The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013)
Found inside a shining stalk of bamboo by an old bamboo cutter and his wife, a tiny girl grows rapidly into an exquisite young lady. The mysterious young princess enthralls all who encounter her, but ultimately she must confront her fate, the punishment for her crime.
 

Romance: Love, Rosie (2014)
Rosie (Lily Collins) and Alex (Sam Claflin) have been best friends since they were 5, so they couldn’t possible be right for one another.. or could they? When it comes to love, life and making the right choices, these two are their own worst enemies.
 

Horror: 47 Meters Down: Uncaged (2019)
Two sisters diving in a ruined underwater city quickly learn they’ve entered the territory of the deadliest shark species in the claustrophobic labyrinth of submerged caves.
 

Science Fiction: Jurassic World (2015)
A new theme park, built on the original site of Jurassic Park, creates a genetically modified hybrid dinosaur, the Indominus Rex, which escapes containment and goes on a killing spree.
 

Crime: Sicario (2015)
An idealistic FBI agent (Emily Blunt) is enlisted by a government task force to aid in the escalating wat against drugs at the border area between the U.S. and Mexico.
 

Thriller: Death Sentence (2007)
Nick Hume (Kevin Bacon) is a mild-mannered executive with a perfect life, util one gruesome night he witnesses something that changes him forever. Transformed by grief, Hume eventually comes to the disturbing conclusion that no length is too great when protecting his family.
 

Documentary: Night Stalker (2021)
This documentary tells the true story of how one of the most notorious serial killers in American history was hunted down and brought to justice.
 

Family: Zathura (2005)
Two young brothers (Jonah Bobo, Josh Hutcherson) are drawn into an intergalactic adventure when their house is hurled through the depths of space by the magical board game they are playing.

Action: Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)
The mythical world starts a rebellion against humanity in order to rule the Earth, so Hellboy (Ron Perlman) and his team must save the world from the rebellious creatures.

Comedy: Step Brothers (2008)
Two aimless middle-aged losers (Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly) still living at home are forced against their will to become roommates when their parents marry.

Animation: Puss in Boots (2011)
An outlaw cat (Antonio Banderas), his childhood egg-friend (Zach Galifianakis) and a seductive thief kitty (Selma Hayek) set out in search for the eggs of the fabled Golden Goose to clear his name, restore his lost honor and regain the trust of his mother and town.

Romance: 13 Going on 30 (2004)
A girl (Jennifer Garner) makes a wish on her thirteenth birthday, and wakes up the next day as a thirty-year-old woman.

Horror: Little Evil (2017)
Gary (Adam Scott), who has just married Samantha (Evangeline Lilly), the woman of his dreams, discovers that her six-year-old son (Owen Atlas) may be the Antichrist.

Science Fiction: Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Young Blade Runner K’s (Ryan Gosling) discovery of a long-buried secret leads him to track down former Blade Runner Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who’s been missing for thirty years.

Crime: Mean Streets (1973)
Charlie (Harvey Keitel) is a young Italian-America in Little Italy, New York City. He is hampered by his feeling of responsibility towards his reckless younger friend Johnny Boy (Robert De Niro), a small-time gambler and hoodlum who refuses to work and owes money to many loan sharks.

Thriller: Daglicht (2013)
Upon learning she has an autistic brother (Fedja van Hûet), Iris (Angela Schijf) is convinced that he is unjustly behind bars for a brutal murder, she sets out to prove her sibling’s innocence, only to uncover even more life-changing secrets in the process.

Documentary: American Factory (2019)
In post-industrial Ohia, a Chinese billionaire opens a factory in an abandoned General Motors plant, hiring two thousand Americans. Early days of hope and optimism give way to setbacks as high-tech China clashes with working-class America.

Family: The Addams Family (1991)

100 Movie Challenge 2014 - # 136: Flight

Description: Airline pilot Whip Whitaker (Denzel Washington) saves almost all his passengers on his malfunctioning airliner which eventually crashed, but an investigation into the accident reveals something troubling.

Review: Director Robert Zemeckis has already earned his Hollywood status. Movies like “Back to the Future”, “Forrest Gump” and “Cast Away” are on his résumé, so we know what he’s capable of. With Denzel Washington in the lead role, “Flight” seems to be a guarantee for success.

The start of the film is amazing. Whip Whitaker is an experienced pilot with a big problem. He’s an alcoholic. Days in a row he has been flying to and from Atlanta and in between flights he spends his time in bed with his gorgeous stewardess, a bottle of gin and some coke. A couple of hours later he gets in the plane, still drunk. When his plane suffers a malfunction, his confidence and his qualities manage to avoid a major catastrophe. Whip is seen as a national hero, but some dark secrets are revealed.

The first fourty minutes of the film are engrossing and exciting, also thanks to Denzel Washington’s great acting. Even with his irresponsible behavior, he manages to win over your sympathy. However “Flight” isn’t a disaster movie, but a character study with a big moral. That moral is sort of forced on you more and more towards the end of the movie. That’s what this movie misses: cogency. When Whip meets former junkie Nicole and a dying cancer patient, the movie gets a depressed feel. Only John Goodman, who plays Whip’s drugdealer, manages to keep it a bit lighter.

“Flight” stays on its feet though, because the acting is very good and Zemeckis manages to keep the audience’s attention. Denzel Washington’s performance is better and more memorable then the movie itself.

Wreck-It Ralph
Description: Ralph (John C. Reilly) is tired of being overshadowed by Fix-It Felix (Jack McBrayer), the "good guy" star of their game who always gets to save the day. Flight

While the world begs to embrace him as a true American Hero, the everyman struggles with this label as he is forced to hold up to the scrutiny of an investigation that brings into question his behavior the night before the doomed flight.

Comment: Denzel Washington hardly ever makes a bad movie.

Django Unchained
Description: Django (Jamie Foxx) is a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz).
