Netflix Friday - Volume 47

Some Netflix film tips for the weekend! And there is something for everyone, since I picked a movie for all the different genres.
 

Action: Mortal Kombat (1995)
Three unknowing martial artists (Bridget Wilson, Robin Shou, Linden Ashby) are summoned to a mysterious island to compete in a tournament whose outcome will decide the fate of the world.
 

Drama: On the Basis of Sex (2018)
The true story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Felicity Jones), her struggles for equal rights, and the early cases of a historic career that lead to her nomination and confirmation as U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice.
 

Comedy: The Lady in the Van (2015)
A man (Alex Jennings) forms an unexpected bond with a transient woman (Maggie Smith) living in het van that’s parked in his driveway.  
 

Animation: Despicable Me 3 (2017)
Gru (Steve Carell) meets his long-lost, charming, cheerful, and more successful twin brother Dru (Steve Carell), who wants to team up with him for one last criminal heist.
 

Romance: Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)
Devastated Peter (Jason Segel) takes a Hawaiian vacation in order to deal with the recent break-up with his TV star girlfriend Sarah (Kristen Bell). Little does he know, Sarah’s traveling to the same resort as her ex and she is bringing along her new boyfriend (Russell Brand).
 

Horror: Annabelle (2014)
A couple begins to experience terrifying supernatural occurrences involving a vintage doll shortly after their home is invaded by satanic cultists.
 

Science Fiction: Total Recall (1990)
When a man (Arnold Schwarzenegger) goes in to have virtual vacation memories of the planet Mars implanted in his mind, an unexpected and harrowing series of events forces him to go to the planet for real. Or is he?
 

Crime: Burden (2018)
When a museum celebrating the Ku Klux Klan opens in a South Carolina town, the idealistic Reverend Kennedy (Forest Whitaker) strives to keep the peace even as he urges the group’s Grand Dragon to disavow his racist past.
 

Thriller: The Life of David Gale (2003)
A man (Kevin Spacey) against capital punishment is accused of murdering a fellow activist and is sent to death row.
 

Documentary: Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal (2021)
Reenactments drive this documentary investigating the mastermind behind a scam to sneak the kids of rich and famous families into top US universities.
 

Family: A Dog’s Journey (2019)
A dog finds the meaning of his own existence through the lives of the humans he meets.

Action: The Dark Knight (2008)

Drama: Arctic (2018)
A man (Mads Mikkelsen) stranded in the Arctic after a plane crash must decide whether to remain in the relative safety of his makeshift camp or to embark on a deadly trek through the unknown.

Comedy: Zombieland: Double Tap (2019)
Columbus (Woody Harrelson), Tallahassee (Jesse Eisenberg), Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) move to the American heartland as they face off against evolved zombies, fellow zombie survivors, and the growing pains of the snarky makeshift family.

Animation: Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989)
A young witch (Kirsten Dunst), on her mandatory year of independent life, finds fitting into a new community difficult while she supports herself by running an air courier service.

Science Fiction: Man of Steel (2013)
An alien chils is evacuated from his dying world and sent to Earth to live among humans. His (Henry Cavill) peace is threatened, when other survivors of his home planet invade Earth.

Crime: Boyz n the Hood (1991)
Follows the lives of three young men living in the Crenshaw ghetto of Los Angeles, dissecting questions of race, relationships, violence and future prospects.

Thriller: You Were Never Really Here (2017)
A traumatized veteran (Joaquin Phoenix), unafraid of violence, tracks down missing girls for a living. When a job spins out of control, Joe’s nightmares overtake him as a conspiracy is uncovered leading to what may be his death trip or his awakening.

Documentary: Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret (2014)
Follow the shocking, yet humorous, journey of an aspiring environmentalist, as he daringly seeks to find the real solution to the most pressing environmental issues and true path to sustainability.

Family: Minoes (2001)
A cat who turns into a young woman (Carice van Houten) helps a journalist (Theo Maassen) protect their own town from a factory boss with an evil plan.

Top 5 Thursday: Breakup Movies

We’ve all been there: bad breakups. In movies it’s also a common theme and here are the five best movies about breakups.

5. Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Jason Segel wrote this very touching and funny comedy, that also happened to be hilarious. Oh and yeah, this is that movie where Jason Segel gets naked.

 

 

4. Silver Linings Playbook

There’s nothing sadder than watching someone refuse to accept the end of a relationship, but that’s what makes the burgeoning romance between Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence’s manic lovebirds so powerful. It’s only once Cooper’s character learns to let go of the woman who abandoned him he can see the woman who’s right in front of him.

 

 

3. Crazy Stupid Love

Love can go crazy, make you crazy, it simply makes people crazy. After his wife wants a divorce, because she slept with her boss, Cal Weaver befriends playboy Jacob. Jacob teaches him how to talk to women and how to get a woman home. It’s such a great comedy, with a fantastic cast.

 

 

2. (500) Days of Summer

It was a sleeper hit. “(500) Days of Summer” alternates between the good and the bad moments between Summer and Tom, even though they seem like the perfect pair.

 

 

1. High Fidelity

Rob Gordon is going through yet another breakup and he even lists his top 5 breakups of all-time. And that’s why it got my attention. “High Fidelity” isn’t just the best breakup movie, it’s one of the best movies ever.
