Movie Review - Everything Everytwhere All at Once

Director:
Dan Kwan, Daniel Scheinert
Genre: Fantasy/ Action/ Comedy/ Adventure
Runtime: 139 minutes
Year: 2022
Starring: Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, James Hong, Jamie Lee Curtis

I WATCHED THIS MOVIE FOR MY 2022 MOVIE CHALLENGE
WEEK 36: A FANTASY MOVIE

Description: An aging Chinese immigrant (Michelle Yeoh) is swept up in an insane adventure, in which she alone can save the world by exploring other universes connecting with the lives she could have led.

Review: What do you do when you are suddenly confronted with a multiverse and the fact that there are hundreds or thousand of other versions of yourself? And in one of those universes and evil person is trying to destroy everything. It happens to Evelyn Wang and while trying to fight the evil she also learns a lot about herself and her daughter Joy.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” is a lot. It is a comedy, a family story, fantasy and has great action scenes that are highly choreographed and edited. It also contains a whole host of references to other films. Think of “2001: A Space Odyssey’.

It’s one of the strangest films I have seen recent years, but with that also the most original, unique and mind-blowing film from the last years. And because of it, it is a movie that will not be to everyone’s liking. I happen to love it, but the more average and mainstream moviegoer would probably not love it as much.

Oldies Movie Review - Halloween

Director:
John Carpenter
Genre: Horror/ Thriller
Runtime: 93 minutes
Year: 1978
Starring: Donald Pleasence, Jamie Lee Curtis, Nancy Kyes, P.J. Soles, Charles Cyphers, Kyle Richards, Brian Andrews, John Michael Graham, Nancy Stephens, Arthur Malet, Mickey Yablans, Brent Le Page, Adam Hollander, Robert Phalen, Tony Moran

Description: On Halloween night of 1963, 6-year old Michael Myers stabbed his sister to death. After sitting in a mental hospital for 15 years, Myers escapes and returns to Haddonfield to kill.

Review: With “Halloween”, Jamie Lee Curtis followed in her mother’s footsteps. Mom Janet Leigh is known for the Hitchcock film “Psycho” and that famous shower scene. After “Halloween” Curtis got the nickname ‘scream queen’. It was her first movie role and her big break in Hollywood.
Many sequels were made after “Halloween”. But the first will always be the best and is an absolute horror classic. “Halloween” didn’t have a big budget and was filmed in only three weeks. “Halloween” had a big influence on the horror genre.
Off course the effects aren’t of today’s quality, but the suspense and scares are much bigger than today’s horror films. Partly because of the music, which is composed by director John Carpenter. The creepy melody is very well known now. With that the camera shows us the perspective of the killer sometimes, which has been copied many times after this. The movie doesn’t have a lot of blood and gore, but is still very scary. That’s what’s so good about “Halloween”.
Killer Michael Myers has become a famous horror character. He is pure evil, with the dead eyes and his stoic attitude.
“Halloween” is a masterpiece and one of my all-time favorite horror movies.

80s Movie Review - A Fish Called Wanda

Director: Charles Crichton
Genre: Comedy/ Crime
Runtime: 103 minutes
Year: 1988
Starring: John Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Kline, Michael Palin

Description: In London, four very different people team up to commit armed robbery, then try to doublecross each other for the loot.

Review: John Cleese managed to write a British comedy that was even in the US a great success. “A Fish Called Wanda” is a fun crime comedy, with both British and American actors.
John Cleese plays lawyer Archie Leach, who is in a rut. He wants to live a more eventful life and Wanda is the one to make that happen. Wanda, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, is the central character of the film. Not only Archie falls for her charms, also Ken, Otto and George. Ken (Michael Palin) is a stuttering animal lover and even named one of his fish after Wanda. Otto, played by Kevin Kline who won an Oscar for this role, is a strange man. He hates everything and everyone, especially when they call him stupid. Michael Palin and Kevin Kline are the funniest actors in “A Fish Called Wanda”.
The story is pretty simple and not very original, but executed exceptionally well. The jokes are both in the dialogue and the situations. “A Fish Called Wanda” is an entertaining comedy, a joy to watch every time.

90s Movie Review - Fierce Creatures

Director: Fred Schepisi, Robert Young
Genre: Comedy
Runtime: 93 minutes
Year: 1997
Starring: John Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Kline, Michael Palin, Robert Lindsay, Ronnie Corbett, Carey Lowell, Bille Brown, Cynthia Cleese

Description: Zookeepers struggle to deal with the polices of changing directors.

Review: A British zoo bought by a billionaire who has the policy to put as much pressure on everyone as possible so that it will make a profit. Willa and Vince, two employees of this American multi-billionaire, are sent to the old-fashioned zoo where Rollo Lee is the director. At the next inspection the company has to make a 20% profit.
The first idea Rollo has is to remove all the cute animals from the zoo and only show life-threatening animals (fierce creatures, hence the title) because this is more spectacular and appealing to the visitors. When Willa and Vince arrive, they decide to intervene. They use different strategies to make the zoo more profitable. For instance telling people that the turtle belongs to Bruce Springsteen, place colorful billboards at every corner and make all the zookeepers wear silly animal costumes.
One absurd event after another is of course the result. When the billionaire Rob McCain himself comes to visit, things really get out of hand. “Fierce Creatures” is a very silly comedy that did make me laugh. It brings together the same four actors that starred in “A Fish Called Wanda”, them being of course John Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Kline and Michael Palin. That was very obviously a much better movie, but this is also a comedy that I enjoyed and is an easy watch. Not as high of quality, but enough for an entertaining evening.

Movie Reviews - Knives Out

Director: Rian Johnson
Genre: Crime/ Comedy
Runtime: 130 minutes
Year: 2019
Starring: Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, Christopher Plummer, Katherine Langford, Jaeden Martell, Frank Oz

Description: A detective investigates the death of a patriarch of an eccentric, combative family.

Review: An old-fashioned murder mystery of Agatha Christie-like allure. That's what filmmaker Rian Johnson advocated when he took care of the story and direction for “Knives Out”. The director of “Brick” and “The Last Jedi” has stuffed all the standard elements of the genre into this classic whodunit: an immense mansion, a rich family full of intrigues, only striking characters and of course the murder of an authoritative man. As one of the characters makes clear, it looks like a lifelike game of Clue. So: who killed Harlan Thrombey with the knife in the study?
Successful thriller author and multimillionaire Thrombey had just called the family together before his death in order to tighten the ties again. Because it's hatred and envy within the family ranks. And with all those fights and conspiracies, the motives immediately come to the surface. His daughter-in-law made money back because of the study costs of granddaughter Megan, whom she cashed twice. Son-in-law Richard cheated with Thrombey's knowledge. A grandson (who by the way has the first name Ransom) was in turn disinherited and Thrombey's youngest son worked for the company. And then there is the South American nurse who may have tampered with medication.
One by one, Johnson will take care of the suspects. He does this with a series of interviews with a very special spectator. Private detective Benoit Blanc, a fantastically smooth role for Daniel Craig, who sounds like Francis Underwood's brother because of his southern American accent, has more than earned his spurs in a number of high-profile cases. Initially he is only used as an observer, but he always makes his presence known to potential suspects in an irritating way by pressing a piano key. It doesn't take long before Blanc completely takes over the murder investigation, although he leaves the detective under the illusion that it isn't so.
Knives Out is indebted to the genre that made Christie great and is therefore a tribute to the work of the highly productive British thriller author. There are studies that have shown that Christie suddenly built up her sentences in such a way that it is impossible to stop reading. Johnson's thriller may not have this hypnotic effect, but it is full of intriguing characters who all have their reasons to get rid of the pater familias. As it should be. It also helps a lot that next to Craig, famous faces like those of Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Chris Evans, Michael Shannon, Christopher Plummer and Toni Collette make their appearance. But Craig is the one who owns this movie. It’s a very tongue-in-cheek performance, over-exaggerated, but therefor delightful to watch.
Knives Out is, with its beautiful scenery and camera work, above all a tribute to the classic murder genre, in which nothing and nobody is what it seems. It's a wonderful puzzle and therefore an escape from the daily grind. The ensemble cast is a pleasure to watch, because it must be wonderful to get absorbed in the dysfunctional family dynamics at a crime scene full of secret corners, spaces and doors.

10s Movie Review - Halloween

Director: David Gordon Green
Genre: Thriller/ Horror
Runtime: 106 minutes
Year: 2018
Starring: Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, Will Patton

Description: Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) confronts her long-time foe Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago.

Review: The term retcon means retroactive continuity. Which means that events in sequels and prequels never happened. With that in mind, “Halloween” is the direct sequel to the 1978 version by John Carpenter. Forgetting that character Laurie Strode had a son in “Halloween H20” and died in “Halloween: Resurrection”.
Laurie Strode is alive and well and completely prepared on another confrontation with the boogey man. Forty years after Michael Myers murdered his sister and four other teenagers with a kitchen knife, the psychopath was send to prison. In the highly secured institute he is staying, he hasn’t said a word since.
Laurie has been traumatized by the events that happened forty Halloweens ago. She saw two marriages fail and her relationship with her daughter and granddaughter is anything but good. Her house is a fort filled with booby traps and Laurie is a well trained sniper. When Michael Myers manages to escape during transportation, Laurie is ready for him.
Director David Gordon Green is obviously a fan of the original, because he has tried to capture the same atmosphere and style. Some scenes reminded me of the other film. And he also manages to minimalize the fake jump scares and he builds up the tension. The highlight of the film is without a doubt Jamie Lee Curtis, who reprises her role s Laurie Strode. But there isn’t enough Laurie in it, what I didn’t expect. The focus is more on the granddaughter, which is something I didn’t really like.
The film has some unnecessary scenes. Like a Halloween party scene, that really belongs in a teen drama film, and a scene with two cops talking about a sandwich.
The final scene is really strong, that was the best moment of the film. I hope they leave it with this, because the “Halloween” ended well this way.

100 Movie Challenge 2015 - # 135: The Fog

Director: John Carpenter
Genre: Horror
Runtime: 89 minutes
Year: 1980
Starring: Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis, Janet Leigh, Hal Holbrook, Tom Atkins, John Houseman, James Canning, Ty Mithcell, John F. Goff, George Flower, Charles Cyphers, Jim Haynie, Nancy Loomis

Description: Legend says that Antonio Bay was built in 1880 with blood money obtained from shipwrecked lepers but no one believes it. On the eve of the town's centennial many plan to attend the celebrations, including the murdered lepers.

Review: At the beginning of the film you already learn that something bad is going to happen: lights turning on and off, electric appliances showing malfunctions, breaking windows, moving furniture. The message is clear. And it’s the not knowing what it is, that makes this movie scary. A fog is coming and something bad is hiding in the fog.
Sometimes the omens are hard to explain, they don’t seem to fit the rest of the film. Like a coin turning into a piece of driftwood, and that same piece of wood changing letters and bursting into flame. The movie loses its logic. But luckily the fog and what’s hiding in the fog gives us the tension and excitement.
There isn’t a clear leading character. There are several character we are introduced to, so we follow more than one in this story.
“The Fog” is directed by John Carpenter, the man that also gave us “Halloween” and “The Thing”. “The Fog” is a solid horror film, but never reaches the level of the two other films.
