Movie Review - How to Make a Killing

Review: “How to Make a Killing” is a dark crime comedy that starts off incredibly promising but, unfortunately, completely falls flat in the end.

The story follows Becket Redfellow, played by a charming Glen Powell, a blue-collar worker who was disowned at birth by his wealthy family. Driven by revenge and pure greed, he hatches a cold-blooded murder plot to systematically eliminate the seven family members standing between him and his billion-dollar inheritance.

The film gets off to an incredibly promising start; the opening is packed with razor-sharp black humor, is incredibly entertaining, and is a delight to watch from the very first minute. Director John Patton Ford perfectly captures the tone of a vicious social critique in the first hour, allowing the viewer to effortlessly get swept up in the protagonist’s absurd plans.

Unfortunately, the film takes a completely different turn in the second half when the tone suddenly shifts to a much more serious crime drama. Because of this change in direction, the script loses the satirical edge that made the first half so strong and unique, causing the pace to slow down and the characters to lose their vibrancy.

What really brings the experience down, however, is the climax. The ending is implausible and too easy and I simply didn’t like it.

“How to Make a Killing” is an entertaining movie and the first hour is a joy to watch, but eventually fails to live up to its full potential due to a weak finale.

Description: Famed Southern detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) travels to Greece for his latest case.

Review: The best murder mysteries have something to say about the world outside the mansion in which the murder takes place. It is the competing interests of people from all sorts of backgrounds, that provide most of the suspense and intrigue; the murder is merely the fuse to the bomb.

This was the strength of “Knives Out”, written and directed by Rian Johnson, which gestured to the cruelty and narrow-mindedness of white America via a bizarre murder in a wealthy family. The sequel “Glass Onion” is set on the private island of the wealthy tech entrepreneur Miles Bron, which is inevitable rocked by murder and intrigue. Once again, old-fashioned detective Benoit Blanc finds himself at the center of the mystery. And once again, the murder prompts digging into the ills of our society.  

“Glass Onion” has to take a few big leaps to get going, we meet all the characters. Not a family this time, but a group of old friends. All invited by Miles, we meet YouTuber Duke, controversial politician Claire, scientist Lionel, star Birdie and longtime associate Andie.  

“Glass Onion” mocks the very richest people, the characters are enhanced and fit perfectly into this crazy, sometimes hilarious murder mystery. Even though this film follows the same story telling structure as “Knives Out”, it being non-linear, “Glass Onion” is a very different movie. Besides the setting, the story is far from the family drama we had in “Knives Out”. Which makes it just as unique. I loved both movies equally.

Again, the film has a fantastic cast. Benoit Blanc is the only character we already knew, played fantastically by Daniel Craig. I think he is one of my newer favorite movie characters. I love his detective style, his way with words, the things that annoy him, the situations he gets himself into or gets into due to others. From the other guest, Janelle Monáe was the one that most impressed me and her character is the most interesting one. Up until the halfway point, her character Andie is a mystery. I loved that.  

“Glass Onion” is one of those films that you need to watch at least one more time, since there will be a lot of things you missed the first time. You have different things to focus on on second viewing, because of the non-linear storyline, things are revealed. On a second viewing, you will be looking for hints, if you could pick them up. And that’s why I love murder mysteries and whodunits like this.

“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” was one of my most-anticipated films of 2022 and it didn’t disappoint. This might even be my favorite film of the year.

20s Movie Review - Underwater

Description: A group of oceanic researches working for a deep sea drilling company try to get to safety after a mysterious earthquake devastates their deepwater research and drilling facility located at the bottom of the Mariana Trench.  

Review: “Underwater’ gets off to a nice, quick start. It only takes a few minutes before disaster strikes: an enormous drilling platform is destroyed by and earthquake, or something similar. It is chaos, but at a depth of about eleven kilometers, in the infamous Mariana Trench. All the rescue pods have been rendered useless on the spot an communication with the surface is no longer possible. The six survivors are trapped.
Captain Lucien sees only one way to escape certain death, but his plan is quite riskyL he and his crew want to make the crossing to the nearby Roebuck base. Thus begins a walk across the ocean floor, neatly ticking off all the setbacks that come with a deep-sea mission of this caliber. From imploding diving masks to malfunctioning oxygen tanks. But there is more hiding in the dark, murky water. The film might not be the most original of its kind, but it works just fine.
Director William Eubank occasionally manages to turn this into an exciting and claustrophobic experience. He often film his heroes close to the skin, and even places the camera in the diving helmet so you see it from their perspective. Fear and panic are therefore very tangible. The evil that presents itself, gives you a H.P. Lovecraft vibe.
Actress Kristen Stewart has been trying to shake off the image of her role in the “Twilight” films and over the years she has managed to do so quite well. In this sci-fi horror she gives shape to Norah, a mechanical engineer who is not easily intimidated. She kind of reminded me of Ripley from “Alien”. And Stewart is really good in this film.
Even though the film doesn’t do a lot of new things, “Underwater” is still a pretty good film to watch. Short runtime, fast pace, exciting and scary because of the claustrophobic feel and the unknown. I recommend.

Movie Review - Love and Monsters

Description: Seven years after he survived the monster apocalypse, lovably hapless Joel (Dylan O’Brien) leaves his cozy underground bunker behind on a quest to reunite with his ex (Jessica Henwick)

Review: Because of a chemical reaction, life on Earth has been forever affected. Animals have mutated into dangerous giant monsters, and humanity has already been substantially wiped out. Survivors hide in underground bunkers, including the terrified Joel Dawson. He decides to brave the monstrous world, searching for his ex-girlfriend Aimee.
In “Love and Monsters”, animals have mutated and become gigantic monsters. We see especially the normally small animals, like insects, frogs, snails, that turned into giant creatures. Suddenly these animals can be life-threatening. Seeing Joel struggle with these monstrous critters makes for a cool viewing experience. Fortunately, the film never takes itself too seriously and the tone remains lighthearted as a result. Which is the perfect choice for this movie.
In addition, “Love and Monsters” isn’t only action and adventure, it also knows when it’s time to catch your breath. The film gives out main character that extra push of character development and creates sympathy by highlighting his friendly relationship with Boy the dog. Also look out for a conversation between Joel and robot Mav1s that shows how beautiful the world can still be and that not everything is evil. Even during an apocalypse you have to keep looking for hope.
The story is pretty simple, but “Love and Monsters” impresses thanks to a charismatic leading man, incredible CGI and overall a very entertaining film. I really loved this movie, more then I expected too. One of my favorites of 2021.
