Movie Review - A Real Pain

Director:
Jesse Eisenberg
Genre: Drama/ Comedy
Runtime: 90 minutes
Year: 2024
Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Kieran Culkin, Jennifer Grey,

Description: Mismatched cousins (Kieran Culkin, Jesse Eisenberg) reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother, but their old tension resurfaces against the backdrop of their family history.

I WATCHED THIS MOVIE FOR MY 2025 MOVIE CHALLENGE.
WEEK 40: A FILM FROM 2024

Review: In “A Real Pain”, we meet Benji and David, cousins who get together for a trip through Poland, in honor of their grandmother who has just passed. Benji is a troubled, complex man with no real plan in life and David seems to have his life together with a wife and son, and couldn’t be more different from Benji.

The film is a layered dramedy that explores the complexity of family, trauma, and identity. This through the duo of Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin, who, despite their differences, create a moving road movie about the Holocaust past. The film combines sharp humor and deep drama to address universal themes. The chemistry between Eisenberg and Culkin is the heart of the movie. They are so different from each other, though they do look up to one another and learn from each other as well.

There is a perfect balance between humor and drama. It’s not just your everyday buddy road trip movie. It’s a journey through Poland, with a focus on the Holocaust. It serves as a backdrop for personal growth and the discovery of their family roots.

The film is fairly slow, which can throw viewers off, and the ending might feel abrupt as well. I think both worked in their favor. The slow pace fits the story and tone and the ending also felt right for this film. But I do understand this being a negative for some people.

“A Real Pain” is a wonderful film, that was nominated for two Academy Awards: best original screenplay (Jesse Eisenberg) and best supporting actor (Kieran Culkin). Culkin very deservedly took home the award, he is so good in this film. For only a 90 minute runtime, this film showed us a lot of character growth and emotional baggage. A definite must-see.

TV Review: "Fargo" Season 2

Genre: Drama/ Thriller/ Crime
Year: 2015
Number of episodes: 10
Starring: Patrick Wilson, Ted Danson, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Bookime Woodbine, Zahn McClare, Cristin Milioti, Jean Smart, Rachel Keller, Brad Garrett, Jeffrey Donovan, Kieran Culkin, Adam Arkin, Nick Offerman

Description: Various chronicles of deception, intrigue and murder in and around frozen Minnesota. Yet all of these tales mysteriously lead back one way or another to Fargo, North Dakota

Review: After a great first season of“Fargo”, a second season had to happen. There is a new storyline, new characters, but you can still see the Coen Brother’s touch.
This season is set in the late ‘70s, where cop Lou Solverson (Molly’s - from season 1 - dad in his younger years) tracks down a family who is involved in a very complex conspiracy. The married couple Ed and Peggy Blumquist, get themselves into a series of crimes and blunders. Like season one, it’s about the everyday man who accidentally walks the criminal path.
The perspective changes during the series. There is not one leading character and we get to know something about every character of importance.
Patrick Wilson plays Lou Solverson, the younger version of the character Keith Carradine played in season one. Besides dealing with a difficult case, he is also worrying over his wife who has cancer. Staying professional in his job and also preparing for the possibility he might be a single dad soon. Wilson is very strong is his role. Ted Danson plays his father in law and also the sheriff. His character is calm and soothing, yet a very believable sheriff. Kirsten Dunst is probably the strongest performer in this season. We see her as Peggy Blumquist, a role we’ve never seen her in before. She really shines.
Season 2 was good, but it never lives up to season 1. The storylines are less interesting and there aren’t any characters that are as memorable as for example Lorne Malvo, Lester Nygaard and Molly Solverson from season 1. Dunst character comes close and so do Mike Milligan and Indian Hanzee, but season 1 of “Fargo” was way better.

100 Movie Challenge 2015 - # 120: Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

Director: Edgar Wright
Genre: Action/ Comedy/ Adventure/ Romance/ Fantasy
Runtime: 112 minutes
Year: 2010
Starring: Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Brandon Routh, Alison Pill, Jason Schwartzman, Ellen Wong, Mark Webber, Mae Whitman, Aubrey Plaza, Brie Larson

Description: Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) must defeat his new girlfriend's (mary Elizabeth Winstead) seven evil exes in order to win her heart.

Review: When you manage to debut with “Shaun of the Dead” and then come with “Hot Fuzz” as your follow up, the pressure is big for a third film. With “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World” director Edgar Wright showed again his comedic talent, but this time combined with fantasy. The first time a big budget film and he succeeds.
It’s a setting where comic books, videogames and guitar music rule. It’s all very surrealistic and the playful setting are a real treat. It’s not your standard comic book adaptation.
Scott meets Ramona, a girl he saw in his dreams. He wants to win her over, but first has to beat her seven evil exes. They can literally appear everywhere and this gives us some real great action fighting scenes. All very original and a great style.
The movie is filled with references, to videogames, music, movies and television shows. It will especially speak to teenagers and twenty somethings. You sometimes do feel that towards the end it’s a bit rushed, because so much goes on in the film.
“Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World” is entertaining and it looks amazing. Edgar Wright succeeds in his first American production.
