20s Movie Review - Shelby Oaks

Director:
Chris Stuckmann
Genre: Horror
Runtime: 91 minutes
Year: 2025
Starring: Camille Sullivan, Brendon Sextan III, Michael Beach, Sarah Durn, Keith David

Description: A woman's (Camille Sullivan) obsessive search for her missing sister (Sarah Durn) leads her into a terrifying mystery at the hands of an unknown evil.

Review: “Shelby Oaks” is a solid and atmospheric debut film, in which the well-known YouTube film critic Chris Stuckmann proves he’s more than capable of making the transition from reviewer to filmmaker. The film excels particularly in its intense atmosphere.

The film combines found footage with a traditional mystery thriller. We follow Mia on her obsessive search for her sister Riley. Riley disappeared without a trace twelve years earlier while filming for a paranormal YouTube channel, “Paranormal Paranoids”. When new video footage surfaces, Mia becomes entangled in a dark mystery filled with occult elements.

Stuckmann excels at creating an ominous, oppressive atmosphere. The excellent sound design keeps the viewer constantly on the edge of their seat. With the help of producer Mike Flanaga, the film looks cinematographically impressive despite the modest budget. The mix of grainy faux-documentary footage and sleek Hollywood shots works surprisingly well.

Camille Sullivan carries the film and is completely convincing as the protagonist driven by the grief and despair. She reminded me of Essie Davis in “The Babadook”.

Stuckmann’s love for the genre is palpable, but the film leans just a bit too heavily on its sources of inspiration, such as “The Blair Witch Project” and “Lake Mungo”. And the finale feels rushed, even though I really loved the ending. But it does leave to many questions unanswered.

“Shelby Oaks” is not a revolutionary masterpiece, but it is a very good horror movie. I seriously don’t understand the low rating on IMDb. Stuckmann proves he has an eye for suspense and effective jump scares (not the cheap ones that are often used in modern horror). The film is a must-see for hardcore horror fans.

20s Movie Review - Saw X

Director:
Kevin Greutert
Genre: Horror/ Thriller
Runtime: 118 minutes
Year: 2023
Starring: Tobin Bell, Shawnee Smith, Synnove Macody Lund, Stevn Brand, Renata Vaca, Joshua Okamoto, Octavio Hinojosa, Paulette Hernandez, Costas Mandylor, Michael Beach

Description: A sick and desperate John (Tobin Bell) travels to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure of a miracle cure for his cancer only to discover the entire operation is a scam to defraud the most vulnerable.

Review: Jigsaw wants to play games again, and in this tenth film in the “Saw”-series, John Kramer makes it as bad as possible, too. This installment falls chronologically after the very first one, providing perfect space to delve into Kramer’s psyche. Instead of hiding from his victims, this time he is in the middle of the carnage. Magically, this tenth film manages to make itself indispensable withing the “Saw” franchise. Enough to pull disconnected fans and skeptics back over the line.

Unlike its predecessors, the first half of “Saw X” consists almost entirely of explanation and background. The storyline offers a deeper look in John Kramer’s motivations, especially why he took this work so seriously and went over the top. The central plot point is a life-threatening brain tumor, which leaves him with only a few months to love. Our of sheer desperation, Kramer goes to Mexico for an expensive experimental surgery. But after undergoing it, he soon discovers that he has been lied to.

In this group of con men, Kramer finds his new group of victims and then it is finally time for the well-known traps. Of course, most viewers come for this part of the film, but the first hour is certainly not slow or tedious. It presents intriguing character development.

As mentioned, most people don’t got to a “Saw” movie for a good plot or intriguing story telling. They want to see blood flow. “Saw X” has more than enough of this. But not only are the characteristic elements of the traps present, but Jigsaw’s pupil Amanda is back on display as well.

“Saw X” wasn’t really a movie I was looking forward to, I didn’t believe we needed it. But it was pleasantly surprised by how good this movie really was. I believe it’s the best since the first film.

TV Show Review - Dahmer (MIni Series)

Season:
Mini Series
Genre: Thriller/ Drama/ Crime
Number of episodes: 10
Year: 2022
Starring: Evan Peters, Richard Jenkins, Molly Ringwald, Niecy Nash, Michael Beach, Penelope Ann Miller

Description: Story of the Milwaukee Monster told from the perspective of the victims and police incompetence that allowed the Winsconsin native to go on a multiyear killing spree.

Review: To say that the life of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer was downright complex is almost an understatement. His childhood was dominated by bickering parents, which eventually ended in divorce. His mother Joyce was addicted to pills and cared only for Jeffrey’s younger brother David. His father Lionel was caring but unwittingly planted a murderous seeded by pulling a four-year-old Jeffrey out of his isolation by getting him interested in dead (road kill) animals. Later in life, Jeffrey became an alcoholic and was thrown out of the army. On top of that, Jeffrey discovered his sexuality, being interested in men. His first of a total of seventeen murders still happened when he took a hitchhiker home and knocked him down when he would not respond to his advances. That’s where the killing began. In addition, Jeffrey Dahmer also got aroused by the shiny sight of internal organs and sometimes ate (parts of) his victims.

When you read this, it makes some people’s stomachs already turn. I understand. And many people who eventually saw the series, could agree. This type of serial killer story could be easily turned into a gory story, showing all the horrors Dahmer has done, in full color. But the creators of this series leave a lot up to your imagination. You know what’s happening, but it’s never displayed fully. There are sounds, visuals and descriptions of smells, that may suggest certain things. And I thought this was a great way to tell this story. In a way, it’s very subtle. There were only two scenes that made me a little sick, but I’ve seen it done way more gruesome in other movies or series.

The other thing I loved about this series, is that it’s not you typical biographical story, about how a serial killer became who he became. We follow the story through different points of view. And especially from the sixth episode on, this show does this in the best way possible. We see the story from the perspective of a victim and his family, the next door neighbor that had been calling the police for a long time before they eventually took action and Jeffrey Dahmer’s father. You see what effect Dahmer’s actions had on the different lives.

Most credit, when it comes to performances, should of course go to Evan Peters. He really gets into character and I can’t imagine how difficult of a role this would be to play. I sure hope he plays a more happier role next. But high praise to Niecy Nash too, who played next door neighbor Glenda.
Whenever there is a portrayal of a non-fictional character, even when evil, makers always try to make him human and try to give also focus on a more sympathetic side. But Dahmer never becomes sympathetic.

I do understand the controversy that comes with this series. Dahmer’s family, the family of the victims, it feels like they are exploited and they have to relive this traumatic experience. But isn’t that with every true story being turned into a movie or series? And if you can’t deal with this theme, just don’t watch it. I believe “Dahmer” was a really strong series, depicting the story in a unique way.

Movie Reviews - Aquaman

Director:  James Wan
Genre: Action/ Adventure/ Fantasy
Runtime: 144 minutes
Year: 2018
Starring: Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Nicole Kidman, Dolph Lundgren, Randall Park, Michael Beach

Description: A daredevil designs and operates his own theme park with his friends.

Review: It appears that the underdogs in the superhero world, get the most colorful films with a lot of creativity and freedom. “Aquaman” is a spectacular and very overwhelming film.
“Aquaman” is hard to analyse, because James Wan makes the same mistakes as many other directors: the film is long, the narrative is a bit unclear and some characters are very one-dimensional. But somehow you walk out of the cinema with a big smile.
Because “Aquaman” has tons of charm. And not in the sense of “ultimate popcorn entertainment’, because these movies are easy on the eyes but very forgettable. “Aquaman” is also pure eye candy, but there is one big difference: the movie is never boring, never too serious and embraces absurdity. The film is visually stunning, wonderful filmed and a treat for the senses.
There are several films that you can see influenced Wan in making “Aquaman”. “Indiana Jones”, “True Lies”, “Avatar”. It’s two hours of mind blowing action and visual effects.
Jason Momoa is a great choice for the title role. After seeing him as Aquaman, it’s hard to think about someone else in the role. And that means he did a good job!
DC still doesn’t win it from Marvel, but James Wan did a solid job. It’s a hell of a thrill ride and extremely entertaining!
