TV Show Review - The Residence (Mini Series)

Season:
Mini Series
Genre: Mystery/ Comedy/ Crime
Number of episodes: 8
Year: 2025
Starring: Uzo Aduba, Giancarlo Esposito, Molly Griggs, Ken Marino, Randall Park, Susan Kelechi Watson, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Jason Lee, Bronson Pinchot, Jane Curtin, Julian McMahon, Kylie Minogue

Description: An inside look of the White House’s staff residence and the lives workers share with the First Family, and the brilliant detective (Uzo Aduba) hired to crack the case of the mystery death that has occurred.

Review: A murder, a number of suspects and multiple rooms and murder weapons; for fans of the board game (and movie) “Clue” this is right up their alley. I love this stuff. With “The Residence’ we get an entertaining whodunit, full of satire and eccentric characters. And while there is plenty to choose from when it comes to murder mysteries, this one is definitely worth watching.

During a gran state banquet at the White House, the head of the household is found dead. The country’s best detective, Cordelia Cupp, is called in to investigate and solve the case as discreetly as possible. Anything but inconspicuous, she sets to work in her own eccentric way.

The creators have found a perfect way to frame the story. Months after the incident, a hearing takes place in which a committee re-examines all the details of the case. People involved are questioned and through flashbacks the viewers get a better picture of the events. Little by little, new insights are revealed. In this way, time is played with and time jumps provide a dynamic progression.

At the same time it allows the committee’s interrogators to question Cupp’s distinct but highly effective modus operandi. Actress Uzo Aduba portrays her role of detective as an unflappable and perceptive character. Cupp is not intimidated by her surroundings or the influential people she interrogates. In her spare time, she is a passionate birder, ans those skills – patience, attention to detail and focus – come in handy in her work as well. In Sherlock-like fashion, she manages to paint a complete picture of a situation with just a few clues.

The pace of the series is fast, with quick edits and fluid jumps in time. This contrasts with the slower, more introspective scenes in which characters are explored. The White House is obviously the ideal setting for a murder mystery, because with its many beautifully decorated rooms, hidden hallways and intriguing hierarchy among the staff, much remains hidden. Cupp has the location locked down; no one is allowed our until the culprit is known.

With a cleverly constructed story, interesting characters and a great setting, the series remains engaging from start to finish. For every murder mystery fan, this is a definite must-see.

Movie Review - Totally Killer

Director:
Nahnatchka Khan
Genre: Comedy/ Horror
Runtime: 106 minutes
Year: 2023
Starring: Kiernan Shipka, Olivia Holt, Charlie Gillespie, Lochlyn Munro, Troy Leigh-Ann Johnson, Liana Liberato, Julie Bowen, Randall Park, Jonathan Potts

Description: When the infamous “Sweet Sixteen Killer” returns 35 years after his first murder spree to claim another victim, 17-year-old Jamie (Kiernan Shipka) accidentally travels back in time to 1987, determined to stop the killer before he can start.

Review: In a small American town, three teenage girls were murdered. Now, thirty-five years later, the killer suddenly turns up to kill Jamie’s mother. Jamie’s friend has just build a time machine, allowing her to travel back to the day the first girl was murdered in 1987.

“Totally Killer” is not a parody of old slasher films, but it is self-aware. I really liked the time-travel element in this film. Although this can be tricky, with logics and plot holes and such, “Totally Killer” does a pretty good job to keep it simple and not make you to worried about those logics.

The film combines horror with comedy, but it’s a but out of balance. It’s more a comedy.

I had a really good time watching “Totally Killer”. Loved the 80s vibes, the time travel element in the slasher genre and I really liked the main character Jamie. Fun times.

TV Show Review - WandaVision

Season:
Mini-Series
Genre: Adventure/ Action/ Comedy/ Drama
Number of episodes: 9
Year: 2021
Starring: Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Kathryn Hahn, Teyonah Parris, Kat Dennings, Randall Park, Debra Jo Rupp

Description: Blends the style of classic sitcoms with the MCU, in which Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems.

Review: Wanda Maximoff and Vision find themselves in their ideal dream world inspired by sitcoms from different eras. Slowly but surely Visio begins to doubt this reality and we must see this mystery unravel.
With “Avengers: Endgam”, Marvel put a stop to their so-called ‘infinity saga’. To which the next film, “Spider-Man: Far From Home”, functioned as a kind of epilogue to this. After a break of over a year and a half, Marvel is back with their first miniseries on Disney +: “WandaVision”. The start of a new phase of superhero stories that are all connected, both on the small and big screen.
The approach of “WandaVision” is highly original and manages to present something we have not seen before within the superhero genre. After the tragic loss that Wanda suffered in the previous Avengerd films, she has, with the help of her magical powers, created an ideal dream world with her husband Vision. She also ‘broadcasts’ this as a kind of television program to the outside world, hence the name “WandaVision”. Each episode sets a new era and is thus and ode to sitcoms of the past and present. For example, episodes are spefically inspired by: “The Dick van Dyke Show”, “Bewitched”, “The Brady Bunch”, “Family Ties”, “Malcolm in the Middle” and “Modern Family”.
In addition to this unique angle and fun nods to various shows, the core of this stoy is a mystery regarding Wanda and how exactly she created this world to her liking. We see subtle hints that tell us something is wrong or ‘mistakes’ are made in the TV shows. It is difficult to describe “WandaVision”, as I want to keep spoilers to a minimum, but many Marvel fan will be rewarded for their patience through the episodes.
“WandaVision” is the most original project Marvel Studios had produced. Completely unique in its execution and a rich viewing experience for superhero fans. Even though the series has ended, Wanda’s story continues in the upcoming “Doctor Strange: in the Multiverse of Madness”.

10s Movie Review - Long Shot

Director: Jonathan Levine
Genre: Comedy/ Romance
Runtime: 124 minutes
Year: 2019
Starring: Seth Rogen, Charlize Theron, O’Shea Jackson Jr., June Diane Raphael, Ravi Patel, Bob Odenkirk, Andy Serkis, Randall Park, Lisa Kudrow, Alexander Skarsgård

Description: Journalist Fred Flarsky (Seth Rogen) reunites with his childhood crush, Charlotte Field (Charlize Theron), now one of the most influential women in the world. As she prepares to make a run for the Presidency, Charlotte hires Fred as her speechwriter and sparks fly.

I WATCHED THIS MOVIE FOR MY 2020 MOVIE CHALLENGE.
WEEK 38: A POLITICAL MOVIE

Review: Opposites attract. A given for many romantic comedies. But when the chemistry is bad, it doesn’t work. Luckily for us, the very different Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen work super well together. A very unlikely duo in a very different kind of romcom.
First, the contrast: Rogen plays the cheeky investigative journalist Fred Flarsky. He refuses to work for a money-hungry media tycoon and quits his job. Theron is Secretary of State Charlotte, very ambitious and wants to run for President. The two know each other from their childhood. When their paths cross at a party, Fred manages to make an unforgettable impression on Charlotte. Because she has to work on her sense of humor, she hires Fred to write her speeches.
Although there is a high degree of predictability present, it doesn’t bother here. Because director Jonathan Levine invests in his characters, their attraction, journeys and setbacks. Which makes “Long Shot” not one of those disposable romcoms, but one with actual depth and dimensional characters. With that, the predictability is easy to forgive.
“Long Shot” also constantly keeps balance. Fred and Charlotte go through palpable emotions and doubts. The supporting characters are simply their for support, they never try to outshine the main characters, they aren’t annoying and are above all functional for the story.
The ending might be a tad to sweet, but overall “Long Shot” is a great romcom set with a political background and two leads that work better together then you might expect. I also love the fact that there is a strong moral compass here: fight for what you love, no matter what the majority thinks. A good, strong comedy.

10s Movie Review - Always Be My Maybe

Director: Nahnatchka Khan
Genre: Comedy/ Romance
Runtime: 101 minutes
Year: 2019
Starring: Randall Park, Ali Wong, Keanu Reeves, James Saito, Michelle Buteau, Vivian Bang, Susan Park, Daniel Dae Kim, Karan Soni

Description: Everyone assumed Sasha (Ali Wong) and Marcus (Randall Park) would wind up together except for Sasha and Marcus. Reconnecting after 15 years, the two start to wonder, maybe?

I WATCHED THIS MOVIE FOR MY 2020 MOVIE CHALLENGE.
WEEK 28: A ROMANTIC MOVIE

Review: Sasha Tran and Marcus Kim spend a lot of time together in their youth Sasha’s parents are hardly ever home and she comes to Marcus’ parents almost every day. The two are inseparable and at one point even go a little further than friendship, but after a fight they lost sight of each other for 15 years. Sasha becomes a successful chef who gets a lot of media attention and is about to get married. When she temporarily moves back to her hometown of San Francisco, she meets Marcus again. He works with his father as a contractor and plays in a band. The meeting is uncomfortable, but the two see each other again and again.
“Always Be My Maybe” follows a pretty standard romcom template, but the way it’s all filled out makes this a very entertaining film. Randall Park and Ali Wong are very funny and have great chemistry. And I loved Keanu Reeves’ cameo, it was hilarious! You gotta love Keanu.
“Always Be My Maybe” might not be the most inventive romcom, but it’s definitely worth watching. Even if only for Reeves.

10s Movie Review - The Hollars

Director: John Krasinski
Genre: Drama/ Comedy
Runtime: 85 minutes
Year: 2016
Starring: John Krasinski, Anna Kendrick, Margo Martindale, Sharlto Copley, Richard Jenkins, Randall Park, Josh Groban, Charlie Day, Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Description: John (John Krasinski) returns to his small hometown after learning that his mother has fallen ill and is about to undergo surgery.

Review: In “The Hollars” we meet John Hollar, who returns to his family home after his mother was diagnosed with a brain tumor. His pregnant girlfriend stays ack in New York. When he comes home, he walks into his ex-girlfriend and has to face the trouble he has with his brother and father.
The film shows the life of an everyday family, each member with their own problems. Because the family isn’t extremely rich and maybe even closer to being poor, people can easily identify with them. The problems the Hollar family is dealing with, are ones that we can have and it makes the film realistic.
Although the film touches a very heavy theme, the humor is still there. Very dry humor, just how I like it. In the 80 minute runtime, we see a lot of different emotions. It’s not a lame comedy, it is in balance with the drama. But never gets to sobby (even though I cried).
The acting is great. John Krasinksi, who also directs this film, takes on the lead and does a wonderful job. I’ve always loved Krasinski and roles like this are perfect for him. The same goes for Anna Kendrick. Richard Jenkins and Sharlto Copley are fantastic as well, ad John father and brother. But it’s Margo Martindale that steals the show. She is so amazing. And with all this star power, I don’t understand why this film was so overlooked.
The story doesn’t follow the standard paths and it has some surprising moments. The storyline of John’s ex-girlfriend is added, but it could have been left out. At least the moments between John and her. The ones between John and Gwen’s new husband are fun.
This is the genre I love the most, a good mix of drama and comedy. And it was very well executed. I really loved “The Hollars”.

Movie Reviews - Aquaman

Director:  James Wan
Genre: Action/ Adventure/ Fantasy
Runtime: 144 minutes
Year: 2018
Starring: Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Nicole Kidman, Dolph Lundgren, Randall Park, Michael Beach

Description: A daredevil designs and operates his own theme park with his friends.

Review: It appears that the underdogs in the superhero world, get the most colorful films with a lot of creativity and freedom. “Aquaman” is a spectacular and very overwhelming film.
“Aquaman” is hard to analyse, because James Wan makes the same mistakes as many other directors: the film is long, the narrative is a bit unclear and some characters are very one-dimensional. But somehow you walk out of the cinema with a big smile.
Because “Aquaman” has tons of charm. And not in the sense of “ultimate popcorn entertainment’, because these movies are easy on the eyes but very forgettable. “Aquaman” is also pure eye candy, but there is one big difference: the movie is never boring, never too serious and embraces absurdity. The film is visually stunning, wonderful filmed and a treat for the senses.
There are several films that you can see influenced Wan in making “Aquaman”. “Indiana Jones”, “True Lies”, “Avatar”. It’s two hours of mind blowing action and visual effects.
Jason Momoa is a great choice for the title role. After seeing him as Aquaman, it’s hard to think about someone else in the role. And that means he did a good job!
DC still doesn’t win it from Marvel, but James Wan did a solid job. It’s a hell of a thrill ride and extremely entertaining!
