Ranking the Franchise - Robert Langdon

Based on the famous Robert Langdon book series, by author Dan Brown, director Ron Howard has turned three of the books in the series into movies. By the time I’m rewatching these movies, Dan Brown has just released his sixth book in this series. The books were kind of randomly turned into movies, starting with book 2, then book 1 and the last was book 4.
 

3. Inferno (2016)
This film, based on the fourth book in the series, was released six years after its last Robert Langdon film. It was clearly my least favorite of the three films and the one I remember the least about. Even though it’s the most recent film in the series. Mainly because it’s feels a lot like the other ones and unoriginal. Check our my full review HERE.
 

2. Angels & Demons (2009)
I really enjoyed the mystery here, more than its sequel. The film opens with a bang and I loved the setting. There is a lot of explaining and the runtime is fairly long, but I did enjoy this film. HERE is my full review.  
 

1. The Da Vinci Code (2006)
This is clearly my favorite. I actually first saw it in theaters and was obsessed with it for a long time. I have rewatched it many times since then, but it had been a while since I last watched it. But it still holds up. This is the only really good adaptation of one of the Robert Langdon books. It’s also very true to its source material. The performances in this movie are  very strong overall, which is not the case for the other two films. The characters in “The Da Vinci Code” are more memorable. Read my full review HERE.

00s Movie Review - The Da Vinci Code

Description: A murder and clues in paintings lead to the discovery of a closely guarded religious mystery

Review: The church wasn’t happy with the book “The Da Vinci Code” by author Dan Brown. But I think the church hates the movie even more, because it’s very detailed, realistic and close to its source material. A plus for director Ron Howard, who gave Browns killer a face, lets the blood visually flow and made the search for the holy grail a mysterious quest. It’s a search full of discoveries, surprises and cliffhangers. Over two hours on the edge of your seat. 

How detailed the movie may be, you can’t be as complete as 429 pages. But there is no need to. Howard used enough references to history from daily life. Why Friday the 13th is an unlucky day for instance. They aren’t flashbacks, it’s like Professor Langdon and Sophie are thinking it all over, to help them with deciphering codes, anagrams and riddles. 

Off course nothing speaks like your imagination. It’s often said that the book is better than the movie, because the characters get a different face than you imaged for instance. But the casting is good. Tom Hanks leads it as Robert Langdon and, as always, does a great job as the leading man. Audrey Tautou convinces as well as Ian McKellen and Jean Reno. But it’s Paul Bettany that steals the show, as Silas. The way he portrayed Silas; possessed, brutal, submissive.

Howard used some modern tricks for the movie. Where Langdon and Sophie use a library database in the book, here they work their way around a pocket computer with wireless internet connection. And the drive in a Smart, that manages to sneak through a gap between two trucks, is also a bit more spectacular than in the book. 

The movie is not as complete as the book, but equally impressive. The movie challenges you to believe, or at least ask yourself questions about it. The truth behind it when it comes to religion and history. For many “The Da Vinci Code” is a collection of factual inaccuracies, but the truth is what you believe. And that’s what Robert Langdon thinks.

Review: Robert Zemeckis, once the Hollywood legend of blockbusters such as “Back to the Future” and “Forrest Gump”, hasn’t had many success lately. His last one was probably “The Walk” from 2015. With “Here” he proves what a talent he has.

“Here” is based on a graphic novel and it seems difficult to film. The book is quite experimental, telling the history of a particular place without a traditional storyline. The point of observation remains the same; the reader is merely an observer of events. Such a non-narrative concept is not easy to translate to film, but in the right hands it van produce something very special. As a result, the films has some engaging plot lines, but no concrete story. “Here” is more about theme and the bigger picture than individual stories. The graphic novel focuses primarily on the broader existential question surrounding forgotten history and emotions of a place. The film has a clearer focus and acts as a silent reflection on American history.

The film shows moments from different times, sometimes even within the same fram. While an important event takes place in the living room, other parts of the screen show what took place there years earlier and later. As a result, you not only see how society is changing, but also get an intriguing glimpse into the lives of everyday people.

A common criticism concerns the CGI rejuvenation of Tom hanks and Robin Wright. Although the effects look technically very impressive, and they both look as how they did years ago, it’s still strange because we know they are much older know. Because when we meet these characters they are teenagers, when they’re both well in their fifties and sixties.

Regardless of the quality of this, all the actors deliver great performances. Hanks an Wright reunite after having worked together in “Forrest Gump”. Paul Bettany is actually the one that stands out the most.
I really think that the concept of this film is really unique and special and I’m glad that Robert Zemeckis hasn’t lost his groove yet. I feel that “Here” deserved more attention when it came out, I feel that this was a very overlooked film. I enjoyed it.

00s Movie Review - A Beautiful Mind

Description: After a brilliant but asocial mathematician, John Nash (Russell Crowe), accepts secret work in cryptography, his life takes a turn for the nightmarish.

Review: It’s not easy being a genius mathematician, when even the most simple decision become the most complicated formulas. John Nash is someone like that. Nobel Prize winner John Nash allowed Ron Howard to make a film about his life. Lead actor Russell Crowe met John Nash. “A Beautiful Mind” was very successful at the Academy Awards that year, it won for best movie, director and script, but just missed out on best actor. In my opinion it’s Russell Crowe’s best performance so far and he should have definitely won the award.

“A Beautiful Mind” doesn’t only focus on him as a genius, but also his schizophrenia. We meet Nash in his college years at Princeton, where he is seen as a weird guy. He doesn’t attend classes, because he can’t learn anything there and he has other things on his mind. His days are spend trying to solve formulas, which results in a controversial thesis. But while he lives his life in the world of numbers and formulas, his paranoia grows. Nash gets delusions and is convinced the government has hired him to solve codes to find the location of an atomic bomb. His wife Alicia has no idea how to deal with it.

 
“A Beautiful Mind” is Russell Crowe at his best. He portrays John Nash so convincingly and realistic. As a mathematician testing theories and as a man fighting his inner demons. But the woman on his side, Jennifer Connelly, also shines. As Alicia Nash she portrays her sublimely, as a woman who both loves and fears her husband. Connelly won for best supporting actress, which was well deserved. Crowe and Connelly are supported by great actors Ed Harris, Paul Bettany and Christopher Plummer. But it’s the script by Akiva Goldsmith that makes this movie truly memorable. Goldsmith takes the viewers into the mind of Nash, while the truth is still hidden until a certain point, to show us how Nash sees the world.

Strong acting and a great script. “A Beautiful Mind” is a perfect film, with both Crowe and Connelly at their best. Well directed by Ron Howard and his best movie so far.

00s Movie Review - The Secret Life of Bees

WEEK 36: A MOVIE WITH A MAINLY FEMALE CAST
 
Review: In “The Secret Life of Bees” we follow teenager Lily, who lives with her abusive father after her mother died. The only good thing in her life is housekeeper Rosaleen, who has to deal with her own fair share of abuse, given she is a black woman who wants to register to vote in 1960s Southern US. When Rosaleen ends up in the hospital after being beat up, Lily helps her and they both run away.
They end up in Tilburon, the town name she find in one of her mother’s belongings. She also found the label of a honey jar, which brings Lily and Rosaleen to August. She is a beekeeper who lives together with her sisters May and June. August welcomes both with open arms and they van stay with her for as long as they need.
The story share many events with us. Like Lily’s personal quest to come to terms with herself and to find out more about her mother. But also the issues like developments in the race issue.
Dakota Fanning plays Lily and does that very well. She is one of those child actors that we still here of frequently, which is good, because Fanning is a very talented actress. She is surrounded by a strong cast: Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson, Paul Bettany, Sophie Okonedo and Hilarie Burton. There is no weak link, but most of the praise goes to Queen Latifah and Sophie Okonedo.
What we see in “The Secret Life of Bees” is not completely credible. The Boatwright sisters’ home seems like a paradise in race-born hotbed America. This makes the movie less realistic. The colorful, warm cinematography and matching music also contribute to that magical, dreamlike setting. But believability or reality is not what this is about. “The Secret Life of Bees” is above all an enchanting story about hope and love in difficult times.

TV Show Review - WandaVision

Description: Blends the style of classic sitcoms with the MCU, in which Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems.

Review: Wanda Maximoff and Vision find themselves in their ideal dream world inspired by sitcoms from different eras. Slowly but surely Visio begins to doubt this reality and we must see this mystery unravel.
With “Avengers: Endgam”, Marvel put a stop to their so-called ‘infinity saga’. To which the next film, “Spider-Man: Far From Home”, functioned as a kind of epilogue to this. After a break of over a year and a half, Marvel is back with their first miniseries on Disney +: “WandaVision”. The start of a new phase of superhero stories that are all connected, both on the small and big screen.
The approach of “WandaVision” is highly original and manages to present something we have not seen before within the superhero genre. After the tragic loss that Wanda suffered in the previous Avengerd films, she has, with the help of her magical powers, created an ideal dream world with her husband Vision. She also ‘broadcasts’ this as a kind of television program to the outside world, hence the name “WandaVision”. Each episode sets a new era and is thus and ode to sitcoms of the past and present. For example, episodes are spefically inspired by: “The Dick van Dyke Show”, “Bewitched”, “The Brady Bunch”, “Family Ties”, “Malcolm in the Middle” and “Modern Family”.
In addition to this unique angle and fun nods to various shows, the core of this stoy is a mystery regarding Wanda and how exactly she created this world to her liking. We see subtle hints that tell us something is wrong or ‘mistakes’ are made in the TV shows. It is difficult to describe “WandaVision”, as I want to keep spoilers to a minimum, but many Marvel fan will be rewarded for their patience through the episodes.
“WandaVision” is the most original project Marvel Studios had produced. Completely unique in its execution and a rich viewing experience for superhero fans. Even though the series has ended, Wanda’s story continues in the upcoming “Doctor Strange: in the Multiverse of Madness”.

10s Movie Review - Iron Man 2

Description: With the world now aware of his identity as Iron man, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) must contend with both his declining health and a vengeful mad man with ties to his father’s legacy.

Review: Two years before the sequel was released, “Iron Man” was an unsuspected hit. It was a straight-forward comic book tale that made it special due to its great lead.
Although the first film wasn’t very surprising, the last scene where Tony reveals to the public that he is Iron Man, was. This created the path for a sequel. Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, is nothing like the other superheroes out there. Heroes like Spider-Man or Batman see their task as a burden and try to keep their identity hidden. But Tony is someone living the good life and not being ashamed of it, but simply has an eccentric hobby that he uses to fight bad guys. This is no different in “Iron Man 2”.
Tony makes it seem easy to live as a superhero with his identity out in the open and you wonder why some of them want to keep their identity hidden. Well, the government pressures him to hand over his inventions. And his character reveal draws the attention of a Russian criminal that has some unfinished business with the Stark family. This Ivan Vanko gets, after his first confrontation with Iron Man, help from a guy named Justin Hammer. He is a weapons manufacturer who is always one step behind Tony. An alliance with Vanko could work for both Hammer as Vanko.
Ivan Vanko is played by Mickey Rourke, who got his Hollywood comeback due to “The Wrestler”. But in “Iron Man 2” there is not a lot for him to do. Babbling in a Russian accent, but mainly silent, he is mostly physically present in the action scenes. Another newcomer to the film is Scarlett Johansson, who is Tony’s new assistant. First it seems like a thankless role, until it’s uncovered who she really is. But the best newcomer is Don Cheadle, who takes over the role of James Rhodes from Terrence Howard, who played this role in the first film. A character being played by a different actor than the previous film is a tough job, but Cheadle nails it and we’ve already forgotten about Howard.
The intention of a series is that you see a clear development in characters, in this cast Tony Stark. But at the end of “Iron Man 2” he is just the same guy as the first film. In doesn’t dig deep enough to give Tony the development he needs.
“Iron Man 2” is a fun and very entertainment sequel, that is mainly good because of an excellent performance by Robert Downey Jr.

Movie Reviews - Solo: A Star Wars Story

Review: After Disney got the rights to “Star Wars”, it’s not sitting still. A new trilogy and a bunch of standalone films. The new trilogy is doing really well and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” was also very good. There we followed rebels trying to stop the building of the death star. Director Ron Howard took the story of a young Han Solo, probably the most popular character in the franchise.
Han Solo, one of Harrison Ford’s most memorable roles, is know as a smuggler and pilot of the Millennium Falcon, which he flies with his co-pilot Chewbacca. In “Solo: A Star Wars Story” we meet Han, before the story of “Star Wars: A New Hope”.
Han has to flee criminals and has to leave his girlfriend Qi’ra behind. He swears to return one day and get her.
“Solo: A Star Wars Story” is a so-called origin story, so we get to see how it all began for Han Solo. How he met his pal Chewbacca, how he meets Lando Calrissian and how he gets the Millennium Falcon. Alden Ehrenreich isn’t very well-known yet, but he is a good choice for the role of young Han Solo. He has to stubbornness, arrogance and charm. But he misses one thing: Ford always portrayed Solo as being ‘annoyed’ of some sort (now what?). It’s hard to explain, but I felt like he was missing it here.
Donald Glover is the best choice for the young Lando Calrissian. And it’s sad that he doesn’t get that much screen time. And Woody Harrelson doesn’t disappoint either, as always.
The story for “Solo: A Star Wars Story” is relatively thin. The references to the original films are fun, especially for nostalgia purposes. But Han Solo’s character doesn’t get enough depth.
That doesn’t mean that “Solo: A Star Wars Story” isn’t a good standalone film. It has everything you want from a good action/ adventure film. Wild chases, shoot outs and great visuals.
“Solo: A Star Wars” is probably not the film that Star Wars fans were hoping for, because a better look at one of the most beloved movie characters in film history is lacking here. As a standalone film it’s good, but within the Star Wars universe it’s not at the same level as the other films.

100 Movie Challenge 2016 - # 69: Captain America: Civil War

Description: Political interference in the Avengers' activities causes a rift between former allies Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.).

Review: The brothers Joe and Anthony Russo did a great job on “Captain America: Winter Soldier” and I was really excited when I found out they were also directing the third installment of this franchise. They really understand the Marvel universe.
The film opens with a scene in Lagos, Nigeria. There the memers of the Avengers are chasing down bad guy Crossbones. The mission ends in a blood bath. And after their actions in New York, Washington and Sokovia, the United Nations wants to close the Sokovia Accords. This means the Avengers can only work on request by the UN.
Tony Stark signs the documents. Steve Rogers thinks it’s a bad plan. Together with Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye and Falcon, he doesn’t sign. During the ceremony, where all the others do sign, the king of Wakanda is killed in an attack. The main suspect is the Winter Soldier. The hunt for Steve’s friend tears the Avengers even further apart.
This Marvel film is mostly about loyalty, family and friendship. Steve Rogers is the one we focus on, of course. He stands for loyalty and friendship and would never abandon his friend Bucky. Steve never doubts Bucky’s story and wants to defend him no matter what. A great thing about “Captain America: Civil War” is that both teams, team Captain America and team Iron Man, have good points and bad points. You would expect that as a viewer you have to lean towards Steve Rogers, but Tony Stark also has some good points. The most awesome part of the film is the showdown between both teams, on a airfield in Leipzig. Well shot, great action, perfectly choreographed fight scenes and humor. And it’s fun to see new heroes Spider-Man, Black Panther and Ant-Man here too.
There is a lot going on in “Captain America: Civil War”, which sometimes makes it feel a bit messy. Lots of characters, old an new ones. But the movies shines when it has to shine: the action and fight scenes and the comedy.

Movie Moments: The Da Vinci Code

"The Da Vinci Code" got a lot of negative critique when it came out. I was one of those moviegoers that liked it immediately. I love the story and excitement of the movie. I would like to share my favorite moments from the film.

Moment # 1: Robert Langdon
We meet professor Robert Langdon while he’s lecturing about symbols.

Moment # 2: Silas
Silas has just committed a murder in the Louvre and is now talking in Latin to someone on the phone. Next we see hem inflict pain to himself. He’s suffering for Jesus Christ.

Moment # 3: Deciphering Saugniére’s messages
Jacques Saugniére left a message for Langdon and Sophie and they need to decipher it. It leads them to the Mona Lisa, where he left another riddle. When the are pointed to Madonna of the Rocks Langdon and Sophie find a fleur-de-lis. It’s a key.

Moment # 4: Cryptex
The key that they found leads Langdon and Sophie to a crypts. Sophie once received one from Saugniére and she tells Langdon all about the cryptex.

Moment # 5: The holy grail
Langdon asks his friend Leigh Teabing for help, because he’s an expert in the holy grail. Teabing explains Langdon and Sophie what the holy grail actually is.

Moment # 6: Langdon opens the cryptex
Teabing wants Sophie to open the cryptex, because he thinks she’s the keeper of the holy grail. Sophie doesn’t know and Langdon gives it a try. He says he can’t either and throws the cryptex at Teabing. It’s broken, but we later see that Langdon retrieved the map before the cryptex broke. The code was apple.

Moment # 7: Sophie is the secret
When Langdon and Sophie think they found Mary Magdalene, Langdon discovers that Sophie is the secret. She is royal blood, the heir, the end of the bloodline, the last living descendant of Jesus Christ.

Moment # 8: Langdon and Sophie say goodbye
After a long journey, Langdon and Sophie say goodbye. Langdon tells her a story about himself, when he was a child. When Sophie goes back to her family, she tries to walk on water, as a joke.

Moment # 9: Langdon follows the roseline
When Langdon is in his hotel room, he decides to follow the roseline. It ends at the point where the two pyramids come together and that’s the place where Mary Magdalene’s sarcophagus is.

Movie Moments: "Wimbledon"

I know a lot of people didn't really like this movie. Well, I'm not most people and I really love this film. "Wimbledon" is such a fun film, with an origianl theme because I don't know that many movies about tennis. Because I like this movie so much, I decided to share my favorite scenes from the movie.
Here they are.

Moment # 1: Room 1221
Peter gets his room key, but he thinks they gave him the wrong room. When he enters the room he sees a woman in the shower, which proves he actually is in the wrong room.

Moment # 2: Peter and Lizzie meet properly
While at practice Peter sees the woman he saw in the shower and she introduces herself as Lizzie. They start hitting targets with their serve and Peter bets she can’t do it again. She does and than it’s his turn. When he hits it, they will have fish and chips together. When Peter hits the target, he tries it again. While serving Lizzie tells him if he hits it again, she’ll sleep with him. Peter misses.

Moment # 3: Peter plays Dragomir
Peter is totally worn off during his match against Dragomir. In his mind he’d allready given up, untill he hears Lizzie cheering for him. From that moment on his game improves and he wins the second round.

Moment # 4: Sauna
Peter just defeated his best friend Dieter. They are relaxing in the sauna and Dieter asks him what happened to him. He thinks it has something to do with Lizzie. Peter tries to convince Dieter that getting involved with a woman while on a winning streak isn’t something he would do. Dieter tells him that’s exactly something he would do.

Moment # 5: Peter punches Jake Hammond
Hammond is coming on to Lizzie, when she clearly isn't interested in him. He starts insulting Peter, but when he tells Lizzie she’s cheap Peter really gets mad and punches Hammond. Lizzie and Peter flee together.

Moment # 6: Work out
After spending the night together, Peter and Lizzie are going for a run. They discover an abandoned tenniscourt, the place Peter learned how to play tennis. Peter tells Lizzie that this is going to be his last tournament. They start pretending to play a tennis match, when they see the comet again and kiss.

Moment # 7: Peter climbs through Lizzie’s window
Lizzie is staying somewhere else and Peter found out where. He wants to visit her so Peter climbs through the window. First he enters her dads room, but when he finally finds Lizzie’s room he tells her he can’t be away from her for 24 hours.

Moment # 8: Lizzie sees Peter on TV
Lizzie’s at the airport and she tries to avoid watching Peter on TV. When she can't anymore, Lizzie hears him talking about her and how she’s the reason he’s in the final.

Moment # 9: Lizzie shows up
Peter is in the final and he goes to his dressing room because of the rain. Lizzie is waiting for him there. She tells him she loves him and gives him a peptalk, because Jake Hammond is beating him. When they start playing again, Lizzie’s takes place in the audience.

Moment # 10: Peter wins Wimbledon
After a five set match, Peter beats Jake Hammond in the final and wins Wimbledon. He gives his tennis racket to the ball boy who supported him and goes to his family. Finally he starts looking for Lizzie, picks her up and kisses her. We later see that the two of them got married, had two kids, he teaches tennis to children and she won Wimbledon twice.

Movie Tip #36 - A Beautiful Mind

Description: At Princeton University, John Nash (Russell Crowe) struggles to make a worthwhile contribution to serve as his legacy to the world of mathematics. He finally makes a revolutionary breakthrough that will eventually earn him the Nobel Prize. After graduate school he turns to teaching, becoming romantically involved with his student Alicia (Jennifer Connelly). Meanwhile the government asks his help with breaking Soviet codes, which soon gets him involved in a terrifying conspiracy plot. Nash grows more and more paranoid until a discovery that turns his entire world upside down. Now it is only with Alicia's help that he will be able to recover his mental strength and regain his status as the great mathematician we know him as today.

Review: This is one of my top five movies! It's fantastic. Crowe plays the role of John Nash perfectly, so intense. I never understood how he could win an oscar for "Gladiator" and not win it for "A Beautiful Mind". This is his best role ever. And Jennifer Connelly, who did win an Academy Award for this film, does a great job also. She's a very good actress. It is a beautiful movie, worth your while.
