Netflix Friday - Volume 45

Some Netflix film tips for the weekend! And there is something for everyone, since I picked a movie for all the different genres.
 

Action: Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)
The IMF is shut down when it’s implicated in the bombing of the Kremlin, causing Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his new team to go rogue to clear their organization’s name.
 

Drama: Seven Pounds (2008)
A man (Will Smith) with a fateful secret embarks on an extraordinary journey of redemption by forever changing the lives of seven strangers.
 

Comedy: O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
In the deep south during the 1030s, three escaped convicts (George Clooney, John Turturro, Tim Blake Nelson) search for hidden treasure while a relentless lawman pursues them.
 

Animation: White Fang (2018)
Based on the timeless novel by Jack London. A loyal wolfdog’s curiosity leads him on the adventure of a lifetime while serving a series of three distinctly different masters.
 

Romance: Save the Last Dance (2001)
A white midwestern girl (Julia Stiles_ moves to Chicago, where her new boyfriend is a black teen (Sean Patrick Thomas) from the South Side with a rough, semi-criminal past.
 

Horror: The Exorcist (1973)
When a 12-year-old girl (Linda Blair) is possessed by a mysterious entity, her mother (Ellen Burtstyn) seeks the help of two priests (Max von Sydow, William O’Malley0 to save her.
 

Science Fiction: Jurassic Park III (2001)
A decidedly odd couple (William H. Macy, Téa Leoni) with ulterior motives convince Dr. Grant (Sam Neill) to go to Isla Sorna for a holiday, but their unexpected landing startles the island’s new inhabitants.
 

Crime: No Country for Old Men (2007)
Violence and mayhem ensue after a hunter (Josh Brolin) stumbled upon a drug deal gone wrong and more than two million dollars in cash near the Rio Grande.
 

Thriller: The Next Three Days (2010)
A married couple’s (Russel Crowe, Elizabeth Banks) life is turned upside down when the wife is accused of a murder.
 

Documentary: Strong Island (2017)
When filmmaker Yance Ford investigates the 1992 murder of a young black man, it becomes an achingly personal journey since the victim, 24-year-old William Ford Jr., was the filmmaker’s brother.
 

Family: Mowgli: King of the Jungle (2018)
A human child raised by wolves must face off against a menacing tiger named Shere Khan (Benedict Cumberbatch), as well as his own origins.

Top 5 Thursday: Tom Cruise Movies

I recently ranked the “Mission: Impossible” movies, but off course Tom Cruise has made many other films. He is one of my favorites, so here are my five favorite Tom Cruise movies.

5. Top Gun

Probably not one of his best, but one of my favorites so you better deal with it. I just love this movie, it’s sort of a Tom Cruise guilty pleasure. I know I was madly in love with Cruise when I first saw him in “Top Gun” (off course not when it came out, I was only 2) I find the need, the need for Tom!

 

 

4. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

Without a doubt the best movie in the franchise. Right when I thought the franchise was done, they gave us this gem. It blew my mind!

 

 

3. Edge of Tomorrow

This was a surprise hit. Finally the Tom Cruise movie we needed after so many years. I didn’t expect much, so I didn’t see it in theatres. I regret that now, because it’s amazing. And Cruise is not even the standard hero he normally plays. His character is actually a coward, running away from the action and responsibilities.

 

 

2. Rain Man

Not necessarily because of Tom Cruise, Dustin Hoffman is the actual star in this, but it’s such an amazing film! A movie not just about autism, but also about two very different brothers learning to love each other.

 

 

1. Born on the 4th of July

His best performance and also his best movie. He grows up a fierce patriot, but when he comes back paralyzed from Vietnam he slowly turns against the war. This was Tom Cruise's final film of the 1980s. He was a complete unknown when the decade began, but by the end he was one of the biggest movie stars in the world.

Top 5 Thursday: "Mission Impossible" Movies

As a teenager I was in love with Tom Cruise (and maybe I still am a little). The “Mission: Impossible” movies are part of his very successful career and he is the face of the franchise. Tom Cruise is such a great movie star and I love this franchise. And it’s different from many others, because they keep getting better. And I don’t mind if they make a sixth one (which is the plan). Here I ranked the five movies we already have.

5. Mission: Impossible 2

This is my least favorite of the series. It’s not terrible, but it was a bit disappointing. Although that rock climbing scene was pretty awesome.

 

 

4. Mission: Impossible

The movie that started it all. It wasn’t as spectacular as the once they make now, but it’s still an amazingly, awesome spy movie.

 

 

3. Mission: Impossible 3

This instalment was especially good because of the villain. Phillip Seymour Hoffman was a great bad guy, very convincing.

 

 

2. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation

High expectations, because I only heard good things about “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation”. And I got exactly what I wanted. The franchise is still going strong and I can’t wait for another sequel.

 

1. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

At the time this movie came out, I thought the franchise was dead. I didn’t think that “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” would be this great. It's my favorite, just because.

Top 5 Thursday: Movies I Watched for My Challenge (January 2015)

The first month of the challenge. I saw some new movies and some older ones. It was a pretty good month, especially because it's only the beginning. Here are my favorites of the month.

5. The Interview

So much controversy about this movie, even before it came out. “The Interview” was really funny and I enjoyed both Seth Rogen and James Franco. They are a great duo.

 

 

4. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

Well, in this series it seems like the movies get better and better. “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” is the best film in the franchise.

 

 

3. Frozen

As a Disney fan, I just loved “Frozen”. And the songs have been in my head ever since. “Frozen” is and old school Disney film, with great songs and showstoppers.

 

 

2. Birdman

This is a cinematographic masterpiece. What a fantastically made movie and Michael Keaton finally gets the role he deserves. Also Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, Edward Norton and Zack Galifiniakas did a wonderful job.

 

 

1. Whiplash

I stood up and cheered when I saw “Whiplash”. What a fantastic movie! And J.K. Simmons, his character terrified me. “Whiplash” is such a good movie, I will watch this many more times.

100 Movie Challenge 2015 - # 7: Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol

Review: A lot has changed. In the nineties Tom Cruise was a big star, but that star was not that bright anymore. Not a lot of great movies came on his path, but “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” should change all that. And it did.

The movies in the “Mission: Impossible” series were always successful and a hit at the box office. Brad Bird, known from his work at Pixar, decided to direct the fourth installment and with that “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” is his first non-animation.

Like the previous movies, it’s filled with exotic places, flashy gadgets and action. Simon Pegg Is given a bigger role, as the comic relief, which is very pleasant. Jeremy Renner is introduced in the series and also a great addition to the franchise. Michael Nyqvist is the villain, which he does well. But not as well as Philip Seymour Hoffman did in “M:I-3”. Paula Patton does a good job as agent Jane Carter. Off course I don’t have to tell you that Tom Cruise did good work as Ethan Hunt, because of him I’m more of a Hunt then a Bond fan. Cruise hasn’t lost it and this is the kind of movie and role you want to see him in.

The action is the highlight of the movie. Sometimes over the top, but such a pleasure to watch. The scene with Hunt climbing the tallest building of the worlds, was my favorite.

“Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” is a fantastic, thrilling action flick, even better than number three in the series.

In the Land of Blood & Honey
