Top 5 Thursday: Comedies from the 1980s

We’re going back in time, time for the best comedies of the 1980s. Try and compare them with today’s comedies, they are very different. They didn’t have to make sense, they just had to make us laugh. Something that comedies lack nowadays. You can also say that Tom Hanks, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase and John Candy ruled 80s comedy. Here are my favorite comedies from the 1980s (and it was really hard!!).

5. Airplane

Today there are lots of spoofs, but “Airplane” started the popularity of this genre. Nowadays spoofs are just sad, laugh-free comedies, but “Airplane” is super funny.

 

4. Ghostbusters

Who ya gonna call? Exactly! “Ghostbusters” is an absolute cult classic, a movie that will always entertain you and make you laugh.

 

 

3. National Lampoon’s Vacation

The first movie following the Griswold family. Clark, head of the family, is driving his family to an amusement park, but nothing goes according to plan. “This is no longer a vacation. It’s a quest. A quest for fun”.

 

 

2. Planes, Trains and Automobiles

A movie I watch every year. For some reason around Christmas (the movie is set around Thanksgiving), but every time a good time. Two complete strangers a stuck together because of a snow storm and Steve Martin and John Candy are the perfect duo to do this.

 

 

1. The Burbs

Maybe not the popular choice, but this is the funniest movie of the 1980s! It might not be the best movie, but it sure is hilarious! Tom Hanks knows comedy.

Top 5 Thursday: Movie Dads

I actually wanted to get this top 5 up around father’s day. Well, we’re way passed that, but it took me some time to come up with the best movie dads. Here they are.

5. Dil Penderghast from “Easy A”
A dad with humor, for some maybe a bit weird and unconventional. But that’s exactly why I like Dil.

4. Clark Griswold from “National Lampoon’s Vacation”
Clark does everything to give his family the time of their lives, but nothing works in his favour. It’s beyond me how this man can always stay so cheery when everything always goes wrong and you have two grumpy kids in the backseat.

3. Bob Parr/ Mr. Incredible from “The Incredibles”
Who wouldn’t want a superhero for a dad? Bob seems like your average man, but he can kick some ass.

2. Chris Gardner from “Pursuit of Happyness”
When mom turned her back on them, Chris Gardner did everything to keep his son on both feet. They went through some hard times, but it eventually paid off.

1. Carl Lee Hailey from “A Time to Kill”
He shot two men in cold blood, but he did that because they raped and almost murdered his 10-year old daughter and he knew they would eventually get out of prison. Any good dad would probably have done the same. I know mine would.

Top 5 Thursday: Road Movies

I really like road movies, people taking a road trip. I always dreamed of taking one myself, if only I had a drivers licence :( . But I can always enjoy others taking a road trip. Here are my favorite road movies.

5. National Lampoon’s Vacation
There where a bunch of sequels, but this one is without a doubt the funniest of all of them. Chevy Chase plays loveable Clark Griswold who drives his family to Wally World in a station wagon. Everything that can go wrong, goes wrong. And then I haven’t even mentioned that Wally World is closed when they finally arrive at the park.

4. The Muppets
I was super excited to hear there was a new Muppet movie out. And the road trip is a big part of this adventure, even if they are only travelling by map.

3. Planes, Trains and Automobiles
I loved this movie when I was a kid, and still. Around the holidays I always watch this movie. Steve Martin and John Candy are a great pair and that car scene is my favorite. Where they are going the wrong way.

2. The Motorcycle Diaries
A truly amazing story about a young Che Guevera, whose eyes are opened to the injustice of the world while travelling across South America on a motorcycle with his best friend.

1. Little Miss Sunshine
The quirkiest family takes a road trip to drive daughter Olive to the little miss sunshine pageant. Everything about this movie is just great. I keep telling other people this, but they don’t seem to understand why I love this movie so much.
