Netflix Friday - Volume 24

Some Netflix film tips for the weekend! And there is something for everyone, since I picked a movie for all the different genres.
 

Action: The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (2015)
In the early 1960s, CIA agent Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and KGB operative Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) participate in a joint mission against a mysterious criminal organization, which is working to proliferate nuclear weapons.
 

Drama: The Revenant (2015)
A frontiersman (Leonardo DiCaprio) on a fur trading expedition in the 1820s fights for survival after being mauled by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team.
 

Comedy: The Cable Guy (1996)
A lonely and mentally disturbed cable guy (Jim Carrey) raised on television just wants a new friend. But his target, a designer (Matthew Broderick), rejects him, with bad consequences.
 

Animation: Monster House (2006)
Three teens discover that their neighbor’s house is really a living, breathing, scary monster.
 

Romance: The Reader (2008)
Post-WWII Germany: Nearly a decade after his affair with an older woman (Kate Winslet) came to a mysterious end, law student Michael Berg (David Kross) re-encounters his former lover as she defends herself in a war-crime trial.
 

Horror: The Shining (1980)
A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father (Jack Nicholson) into violence, while his psychic son (Danny Lloyd) sees horrific forebodings from both past and future.
 

Science Fiction: War of the Worlds (2005)
As Earth is invaded by alien tripod fighting machines, one family fights for survival.
 

Crime: Se7en (1995)
Two detectives, a rookie (Brad Pitt) and a veteran (Morgan Freeman), hunt a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his motives.
 

Thriller: Identity (2003)

Family: Johnny English: Reborn (2011)
Johnny English (Rowan Atkinson) goes up against international assassins hunting down Chinese Premier Xiang Ping.

100 Movie Challenge 2016 - # 108: The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Review: Since his Sherlock Holmes movies were a success, director Guy Ritchie looks like someone who can bring back old franchises. This time it’s “The Man from U.N.C.L.E., based on a televions show from the 1960s. And although the film isn’t as memorablem “The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is definitely a very entertaining comedic espionage.
During the cold war, the American CIA agent Napoleon Solo joins forces with the Russian KGB agent Ilya Kuryakin. Not very surprising is their rivalry at the beginning of the film. During an action packed opening, Solo manages to escape Kuryakin, together with the beautiful car mechanic Gaby. Gaby is the daughter of a nuclear scientist who is missing and she is probably the only clue to a potential conspiracy.That’s the reason why the two agents decide to work together.
Of course working together is not going to go smoothly, because of the differences between the two. And the interaction between actors Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer is fun to watch. Cavill works his charm as womanizer Solo and Hammer is more physically present. But it’s Alicia Vikander who steals the show as Gaby.
The atmosphere and the look of the film is great. It’s like we are really in the sixties. The location, sunny Rome, is perfect and the costumes are beautiful.
“The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” isn’t as surprising as espionage rival “Kingsman: The Secret Service” was, but certainly entertaining and enjoyable.

The Water Diviner

Description: Australian farmer Connor (RussellCrowe) travels to Istanbul to discover the fate of his sons, reported missing in the action, where he forges a relationship with the beautiful Turkish woman (Olga Kurylenko) who owns the hotel in which he stays. Holding on to hope, and with the help of a Turkish Officer, Connor embarks on a journey across the country to find the truth about the fate of his sons.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Description: CIA agent Solo (Henry Cavill) and KGB agent Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) are forced to put aside longstanding hostilities, the two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. The duo's only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization, and they must race against time to find him and prevent a worldwide catastrophe.
