Netflix Friday - Volume 57

Some Netflix film tips for the weekend! And there is something for everyone, since I picked a movie for all the different genres.
 

Action: The Kingdom (2007)
A team of U.S. government agents are sent to investigate the bombing of an American facility in the Middle East.
 

Drama: Honey Boy (2009)

Animation: Captain Underpants (2017)
Two overly imaginative pranksters named George (Kevin Hart) and Harold (Thomas Middleditch) hypnotize their principal (Ed Helms) into thinking he’s a ridiculously enthusiastic, incredibly dimwitted superhero named Captain Underpants.
 

Romance: Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)
Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) is determined to improve herself while she looks for love in a year in which she keeps a personal diary.
 

Horror: The Curse of La Llorona (2019)
Ignoring the eerie warning of a troubled mother suspected of child endangerment, a social worker (Linda Cardellini) and her own small kids are soon drawn into a frightening supernatural realm.
 

Science Fiction: War of the Worlds (2005)
An American family is fighting for survival during an alien invasion threatening the future of humanity.
 

Crime: The Kid Detective (2020)
A once-celebrated kid detective (Adam Brody), now 32, continues to solve the same trivial mysteries between hangovers and bouts of self-pity. Until a naïve client brings him his first ‘adult’ case to find out who brutally murdered her boyfriend.
 

Thriller: The Visit (2015)
Two siblings become increasingly frightened by their grandparents’ disturbing behavior while visiting them on vacation.
 

Documentary: The Last Days (1998)
In late 1944, even as they faced imminent, defeat, the Nazis expended enormous resources to kill or deport over 425,000 Jews during the “cleansing” of Hungary. This documentary focuses on the plight of five Hungarian Jews who survived imprisonment in Auschwitz.
 

Family: The Road to El Dorado (2000)
Two swindlers get their hands on a map to the fabled city of gold, El Dorado.

10s Movie Review - The Visit

Description: Two siblings become increasingly frightened by their grandparents’ disturbing behavior while visiting them on vacation.

Review: In “The Visit”, a sister and brother go visit the grandparents they have never met before, because their mother broke all contact with them. Grandpa and grandma are just acting a little strange.
What a breath of fresh air “The Visit” is. The film contains parts horror, thriller and comedy. A strange mix that surprisingly works well.
Becca and Tyler, played by Olivia DeJonge and Ed Oxenbould, are excellently cast. With child actors, that’s always the question, but both are really good in their roles.
Gradually all kinds of possible scenarios pass in review; what will be the punchline, what twists do the makers have in store for us? The actual twist didn’t really come to mind until the moment it happens.
The hand-held camera, found-footage type of filming really adds to the tension of the film. It makes it more realistic and creepy.
“The Visit” is not a typical genre film, it is something unusual. Not necessarily groundbreaking, but refreshing and highly recommended.

Black Mass

Description: The true story of Whitey Bulger (Johnny Depp), the brother of a state senator (Benedict Cumberbatch) and the most infamous violent criminal in the history of South Boston, who became an FBI informant to take down a Mafia family invading his turf.

Preggoland

Description: When Ruth (Sonja Bennett) ruins a baby shower with her drunken, juvenile antics, her old high school cronies, who are all mothers now, promptly de-friend her. But when she is later mistakenly thought to be "with child," she is inexplicably welcomed back into the group. Ruth plans on coming clean, but when her dad has a heart attack and tells her that the only thing keeping him alive is the promise of grandkids, Ruth decides to continue to fake the pregnancy. Things get even more complicated when Ruth falls in love with her new boss, who seems to wants nothing more than to raise her unborn child as his own. Can she get out of this without losing her job, friends, respect of her family, and the new love of her life? This edgy comedy challenges the stereotypes of finding love and motherhood.

Gemma Bovery

Description: Martin (Fabrice Luchini), an ex-Parisian well-heeled hipster passionate about Gustave Flaubert who settled into a Norman village as a baker, sees an English couple moving into a small farm nearby. Not only are the names of the new arrivals Gemma (Gemma Arterton) and Charles Bovery (Jason Flemyng), but their behavior also seems to be inspired by Flaubert's heroes.
