Movie Review - Verity

Director:
Michael Showalter
Genre: Thriller
Runtime: 117 minutes
Year: 2026
Starring: Dakota Johnson, Josh Hartnett, Anne Hathaway

Description: Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson), hired to ghostwrite for best-selling author Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway), uncovers Verity’s autobiographical notes, and becomes involved in what may prove to be a lethal conspiracy.

Review: The film adaptation of a gripping bestseller always comes with sky-high expectations, and the psychological thriller “Verity” was no exception. Directed by Michael Showalter and boasting a star-studded cast featuring Dakota Johnson, Josh Hartnett and Anne Hathaway, this adaptation seemed like a guaranteed success on paper. Unfortunately, the film falls well short on the mark. What should have been a nerve-wrecking ride ends up being a slow and uneven disappointment that never quite manages to capture the tension of the source material.

The film follows Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling author who is hired by Jeremy Crawford to finish writing the remaining books in a highly successful series. The original author, Jeremy’s wife Verity Crawford, is at home, seriously injured and incapacitated after a severe car accident. Lowen moves in with the family at their secluded estate to delve into Verity’s notes. She soon stumbles upon a hidden, terrifying manuscript in which Verity makes a gruesome confession about the family’s dark secrets. As the attraction between Lowen and Jeremy grows, Lowen becomes entangled in a web of manipulation, and the line between chilling fiction and dangerous reality begins to blur.

Let’s get right to the point: the book, written by Colleen Hoover, is far better. While the novel keeps the reader in a constant stranglehold with psychological paranoia and a suffocating atmosphere, the film adaptations opts for a pace that can only be described as boring. The film drags laboriously from one dialogue scene to the next, with only a few rare, suspenseful moments. As a result, the thrilling Hitchcock-esque suspense that the filmmaker tried to imitate never really comes across.

The film’s biggest stumbling block, however, is the way the acting talent was handled. The casting of the title role, in particular, is a missed opportunity: Anne Hathaway’s role is painfully underutilized. Hathaway is a world-class actress, but here she is reduced to a passive character. Her character never takes on the terrifying, mysterious menace that the story so desperately needs. Although Johnson and Hartnett fo their best to keep the chemistry alive, they cannot save the movie.

“Verity” lacks the much-needed intensity that the book has and gets bogged down in a drawn-out thriller that leaves fans of the book cold.

Book Review - Verity by Colleen Hoover

Title:
Verity
Series: -
Author: Colleen Hoover

Description: Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish.

Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity's notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn't expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity's recollection of what really happened the day her daughter died.

Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen's feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife's words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her.

Review: Colleen Hoover is know for her New Adult book and with “Verity” she goes in a completely different direction. It’s a thriller, one that will be difficult to put down.

Young writer Lowen Ashleigh gets an offer of a lifetime: she is asked to finish successful author Verity Crawford’s popular book series. Verity has been paralyzed since a serious accident and won’t be able to finish the series herself. Lowen will stay with the family for a few days to go over Verity’s notes. Among the documents, Lowen finds an unfinished autobiography, and as she starts reading it, an unpleasant feeling creeps up on her. The more she reads, the more frightened she becomes. Lowen wants to keep the biography hidden, even from Verity’s husband Jeremy.

Lowen is a introverted character whose life is complete chaos when she is approached to finish the bestselling books. We get to know her right away. Verity is a mystery, but through her manuscript, we get to know more about her. You will probably feel a tremendously dislike towards Verity. There is constant tension during the time Lowen is staying at the Crawford residence.

“Verity” is a unique book that tells an incredibly exciting story. It has some spice in it, which I didn’t mind. But these parts in the book become a bit repetitive as the story develops. This is the only point of criticism, because I loved this book.

The twist at the end was really good and it leaves you with a lot of questions at the end. Colleen Hoover manages to catch you off guard an leave you confused. A good book for a book club, it will lead up to discussion. I believe “Verity” is a thriller for readers that are often a bit intimidated by the genre.
