Netflix Friday - Volume 80

Some Netflix film tips for the weekend! And there is something for everyone, since I picked a movie for all the different genres.
 

Action: Desperado (1995)
Former musician and gunslinger El Mariachi (Antonio Banderas) arrives at a small Mexican border town after being away for a long time. His past quickly catches up with him and he soon gets entangled with the local drug kingpin Bucko (Joachim de Almeida) and his gang.  
 

Drama: The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Two imprisoned men (Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman) bond over a number of years, finding solace and eventual redemption through acts of common decency.
 

Comedy: Daddy’s Home (2015)
Brad Whitaker (Will Ferrell) is a radio host trying to get his stepchildren to love him and call him dad. But his plans turn upside down when their biological father, Dusty Mayron (Mark Wahlberg), returns.
 

Animation: Sausage Party (2016)
A sausage (Seth Rogen) strives to discover the truth about his existence.
 

Romance: Clueless (1995)
Shallow, rich and socially successful Cher (Alicia Silverstone) is at the tp of her Beverly Hills high school’s pecking scale. Seeing herself as a matchmaker, Cher first coaxes two teachers into dating each other.
 

Horror: Bone Tomahawk (2015)
In the dying days of the old west, an elderly sheriff (Kurt Russell) and his posse set out to rescue their town’s doctor from cannibalistic dwellers.
 

Science Fiction: Star Trek (2009)
The brash James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) tries to live up to his father’s legacy with Mr. Spock (Zachary Quinto) keeping him in check as a vengeful Romulan from the future creates black holes to destroy the Federation one planet at a time.
 

Crime: Man on Fire (2004)
In Mexico City, a former CIA operative (Denzel Washington) swears vengeance on those who committed an unspeakable act against the family he was hired to protect.

Thriller: Gone Girl (2014)
With his wife’s (Rosamund Pike) disappearance having become the focus of an intense media circus, a man (Ben Affleck) sees the spotlight turned on him when it’s suspected that he may not be innocent. 

 

Documentary: Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond (2017)
A behind-the-scenes look at how Jim Carrey adopted the persona of idiosyncratic comedian Andy Kaufman on the set of “Man on the Moon” (1999).
 

Family: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)
The adventures of writer Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) in New York’s secret community of witches and wizards seventy years before harry Potter reads his book in school.

Action: Backdraft (1991)
Two Chicago firefighter brothers (Kurt Russell, William Baldwin), who don’t get along, have to work together while a dangerous arsonist is on the loose.
 

Drama: Dark Waters (2019)
A corporate defense attorney (Mark Ruffalo) takes on an environmental lawsuit against a chemical company that exposes a lengthy history of pollution.
 

Comedy: Julie & Julia (2009)
Julia Child’s (Meryl Streep) story of her start in the cooking profession is intertwined with blogger Julie Powell’s (Amy Adams) challenge to cook all the recipes in Child’s first book.
 

Animation: Hotel Transylvania 3 (2018)
Count Dracula (Adam Sandler) and company participate in a cruise for sea-loving monsters, unaware that their boat is being commandeered by the monster-hating Van Helsing family.
 

Romance: The Great Gatsby (2013)
A writer and wall street trader, Nick (Tobey Maguire), finds himself drawn to the past and lifestyle of this millionaire neighbor, Jay Gatsby (Leonard DiCaprio).
 

Horror: Mother (2017)
A couple’s (Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem) is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.

Documentary: Metallica: Some Kind of Monster (2004)
The iconic metal band struggle for two years to create their album St. Anger, dealing with alcoholism, the loss of their bass player, and the challenge of working with a psychotherapist.
 

Family: Charlotte’s Web (2006)
Wilbur the Pig is scared of the end of the season, because he knows that come that time, he will end up on the dinner table. He hatches a plan with Charlotte (Julia Roberts), a spider that lives in his pen, to ensure that this will never happen.

Five to Watch - Prequel Movies

With “Solo: A Star Wars Story” now out in theaters, it’s time to look at all those prequels that came out over the years. I selected five prequels that are worth it to watch, but you might not know about them or they are seriously underrated or overlooked.

Monsters University
“Monsters Inc.” was a story about Mike and Sully, professional monsters who helped produce power for their city by scaring children in our world. It’s still my favorite Pixar movie. And we were surprised with a prequel instead of an expected sequel. In “Monster University” we follow the early days of Mike and Sully’s friendship while they were still in college. HI-LA-RI-OUS!

Casino Royale
“Casino Royale” was Ian Fleming’s first James Bond novel. By 2006 it had already been adapted twice. Director Martin Campbell and then new Bond Daniel Craig gave us an unexpectedly poignant origin story of the most famous secret agent in the world. And for me the best Bond movie.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me
This is a prequel to the highly popular TV series “Twin Peaks”. Where a young FBI field agent’s disappearance might be connected to the future murder of Laura Palmer, a teenager with a bizarre social life.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Four decades and one failed remake later, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” hits theaters and brings us one of the best and most solid trilogies ever. And it also brought us Andy Serkis’ motion-captured performance of Caesar, who is now one of the most beloved film characters.

Star Trek
When the last episode of “Star Trek: Enterprise” aired in 2005, it seemed like the end of the sci-fi series. When J.J. Abrams name was attached to a new “Star Trek” movie, it caused a lot of excitement. Abrams kept an expanded origin story of the original characters but also introduced a whole new timeline to the universe.

Marry, Kiss, Cliff - Round 11

Andy Stitzer (“The 40 Year Old Virgin”), Mark (“Love Actually”) and Spock (“Star Trek”)

Marry: Mark is such a sweet guy, who knows how to sweep a girl off her feet. I think he would make a loving and caring husband. (And if a zombie apocalypse would start, he would easily kill them. Yes, that’s the same guy!)

Kiss: Andy Stitzer is the sweetest guy ever. I would easily marry him too, but I most definitely don’t want to push him off a cliff. So I would kiss him instead, because this guy has had all the bad luck one man can handle.

Cliff: Spock is way too serious for me and his haircut is just a no-no!

DVD Collection Update (10)

The first three Dvd's I'm going to share I bought myself, the others I received for Christmas from my brother and my parents. Very proud of them!

First I got the two new "Star Trek" movies. I already saw the first movie before, but "Star Trek Into Darkness" is going to be a surprise. I have to be honest that I especially want to see Benedict Cumberbatch as the villain.

I recently watched this movie and I'm glad I bought it. I heard so many great things about it. It's a Belgian movie and it touches your heart.

This is probably not going to be one of his best movies, but I like Clint Eastwood and also Amy Adams. I think they are going to be great together, I still have to see it.

This was my first Christmas gift. I never would have bought "Rango" myself, because I own hardly any animated movies that aren't Disney. But I saw it once and I thought this was a fun movie. I really like this gift!

How I got this TV-show, "Waking the Dead" season 3, is actually a very funny story. I don't know it and I've never seen a single episode of this show. I asked for season 3 though, but from "The Walking Dead". My mom made a mistake, haha. But since this is an Emmy winning BBC detective, I might even like this show. It sure sounds good. So, I'm still a happy girl.

The cutest robot ever is probably "Wall-E". This edition is actually very cool, the disc slides out of its cover. And the cover is embossed and very shiny.

And my last present was "Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter", a movie I almost bought myself a week ago. I put it back, because I thought this could be a movie my brother could buy me for Christmas. Do I know my brother or what?
