Review: “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” is the third part in the “Ant-Man’ series. Peyton Reed is again the director, having now directed the entire trilogy.

Since the Avengers are at rest, the threat and action is moved to a place where Ant-Man and his family have been before: the Quantum Realm. The ultimate threat in the film comes from one person and that is Kang, a mysterious man living in the Quantum Realm. Jonathan Majors portray him and does this so well. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” is primarily the film within the larger MCU that serves as his entrance, and this is the film biggest achievement. Otherwise, plenty happens, but it’s all not very innovative or exciting. The stakes are not terribly high, outside having to save family and loved ones, which is fairly predictable.

The performances are good, the humor is there and I just love Paul Rudd. He can do no wrong. But if it weren’t for the character of Kang, this movie was not per say necessary.

80s Movie Review - Dangerous Liaisons

Review: France, just before the revolution. To take revenge on an old flame, Marquise de Merteuil asks Vicomte de Valmont if he wants to seduce the innocent new fiancée of her ex-lover. If Valmont provides written proof of her conquest, he receives a reward. Valmont agrees, but has actually set his sights on the chaste Madame de Tourvel.
“Dangerous Liaisons” is a film based on the play by Christopher Hamtons, “Les liaisons dangereuses”, which was based on the novel by Choderlos de Laclos from 1782.
The film is stylish, seductive, clever and incredible entertaining. And the cast is fantastic. We see a very young Uma Thurman and Keanu Reeves. But Michelle Pfeiffer shines in her role as Madame de Tourvel. John Malkovich plays the manipulative Valmont, in an excellent way. But it’s Glenn Close, in one of her most vicious roles to date, that steals the show. Every scene she is in, belongs to her.
A film filled with intrigue, deceit and manipulation, all set in in 18th century France. With a really strong cast this film makes for an entertaining movie night.

Review: After the big spectacle that is “Avengers: Infinity War”, Marvel studios gives his fans a moment to breath, with the smaller but also important “Ant-Man and the Wasp”. The first film from 2015 was very well received and was a true joy to watch. With director Peyton Reed returning, we get a trusted and very solid sequel with a high tempo and a high entertainment level.
Scott Lang is home on house arrest and his allies Hank and Hope are wanted. But somehow to cross paths again and have to work together. Don’t expect big threats, but a more personal touch and individual life situations that are on the line.
Paul Rudd was already a big surprise as Scott Lang and again he does a great job. But the biggest enrichment in this film is the introduction of The Wasp, portrayed by Evangeline Lilly. Hope is a strong power woman, not afraid to take the lead or to get her hands dirty.
The humor is also what made the first film strong. Again clearly present in the sequel. Especially character Luis, played by Michael Peña. And Langs sassy daughter Cassie.
For an soactacular adventurous action movie, “Ant-Man and the Wasp”is fairly small and that is what Marvel needed right now. And the fans, after all we had to deal with in “Avengers”Infinity War”.
“Ant-Man and the Wasp” eventually doesn’t manage to live up to the first film, but it is a fun time, filled with humor and good characters. I really enjoyed it and it’s a movie I would rewatch.

100 Movie Challenge 2017 - # 125: Mother!

Review: “Mother!” starts pretty conventional: a couple lives a calm and peaceful life in a beautiful house. Their life changes when they provide shelter for two stranger. The husband (the characters don’t have names) feels okay about it, it’s his idea. But the wife feels uncomfortable and thinks it’s strange to simply invite strangers into their house. She does everything to make their house a home, when she sees intruders destroy it. But he loves the adoration he gets from them.
Director Darren Aronofsky builds up to ultimate chaos, with two trumps: leading lady Jennifer Lawrence and the house it’s set in. Aside from some shots of the house from afar, the camera stays indoors and is only a few feet away from Lawrence. Wandering through the halls, rooms and stairs her character’s feeling of being lost and helpless grows.
Aronofsky always gets the best from his actors and Jennifer Lawrence is no exception. It’s one of her strongest roles. The fact that she is the only character that responds to the situation the way we all probably should, you get the impression that there is more going on than we eventually led to believe. This is definitely not a movie for everyone, especially when we go towards the climax of the film. It’s pretty fucked up actually. But you have enough to talk about after seeing “Mother!”.
“Mother!” is original, unconventional, a bit disturbing and very well done.

100 Movie Challenge 2017 - # 121: Murder On the Orient Express

Review: This is maybe the 6th book to movie adaptation for “Murder On the Orient Express”, I think, The book was released in 1934 and is probably her most known book. And because Agatha Christie’s novel is such a masterpiece when it comes to murder mysteries, many want to turn it into film. It’s a perfect whodunit. In 1974 Albert Finney played the role of Hercule Poirot in Sidney Lumet’s version of the story. Now, 2017, Kenneth Branagh directs and also decided to portray the infamous detective.
Kenneth Branagh has a dramatic style when it comes to acting. It’s perfect for Shakespeare films. And I have to say, his performance as Hercule Poirot is really good.
We know the story. Detective Hercule Poirot is on the Orient Express, enjoying a holiday, when one of the passengers is murdered. One of the twelve passengers is the killer. Time for Poirot to solve the case, while the train is unable to move on due to a snow storm.
Lots of details, trying to find the killer. It’s close to the original, but some things go a bit too fast because they have to stay within the duration of 2 hours. There is also not enough time to develop all the twelve suspected characters. Some we get to know better than others.
Branagh really managed to get a fantastic cast together. Judi Dench, Michelle Pfeifer, Johnny Depp, Willem Dafoe, Penélope Cruz and Daisy Ridley. And they are all solid, but no one really shines. Branagh’s interpretation of Poirot is good, the movie is not great. But very enjoyable and it looks stunning.

100 Movie Challenge 2014 - # 144: Dark Shadows

Description: An imprisoned vampire, Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp), is set free and returns to his ancestral home, where his dysfunctional descendants are in need of his protection.

Review: Bringing a vampire story to life is off course perfect for director Tim Burton. His good friend Johnny Depp portrays the leading character Barnabas Collins, who has been obsessed by this character for years. Both actor and director are fans of the series created by Dan Curtis, aired during 1966 and 1971.

In the prologue of “Dark Shadows” we see the history of the Collins family. In 1752 they move from Liverpool to Collinsport, Maine where they earn their money with fish. Son Barnabas becomes the big shot, a man who can get any woman. Everything changes when he breaks the heart of maid Angelique Bouchard, a witch who takes revenge by killing Barnabas’ love Josette and changing him into a vampire. He is buried alive and is freed two centuries later. In 1972 Barnabas sees that Collinwood Manor is a big mess.

Tim Burton made the movie look dark and it’s filled with great décor, beautiful costumes and morbid humor. Depp fits his character perfectly. And Eva Green is a strong opponent. Other character don’t get much room to exploit, but do have their moments. And the plot twist around Chloë Grace Moretz’ character doesn’t really work. “Dark Shadows” is above all the big ‘Johnny Depp show’. The execution doesn’t really meet the expectations we all had. The humor does also lose its edge.

“Dark Shadows” is a perfect movie for both Burton and Depp, with the bizarre characters and macabre setting. It’s still a fun film to watch, but not surprising at all for Tim Burton fans.

100 Movie Challenge 2014 - # 10: People Like Us

Review: Director Alex Kurtzman is known for his production work, this is the first movie he directed. And it’s one to be proud of.
We meet Sam, a salesman with talented and he lives a happy life with his girlfriend. When his father dies, whom he never really connected with, he has to face his mom again. While settling his father’s estate Sam finds out that he has a sister, Frankie, and he wants to get to know her. Sam’s view on life changes and he soon realizes what the important things in life are.
Chris Pine always was an actor who was just nice to look at. This movie changed that for me, because his performance is strong, convincing and heartfelt. Same goes for Elizabeth Banks, who has a fantastic connection with Pine. Michelle Pfeifer, one of my favorites, is very solid and proofs that she still belongs with the best.
The story sounds a bit mundane, but it’s very well executed. Because of the interesting characters, you can relate to them and you are with them every step of the way. The ending scene gave me goose bumps, in a good way.
“People Like Us” is an overlooked movie, I don’t think many people have seen it. It’s definitely worth watching.

Michelle Pfeiffer is one actress that I've liked for so many years. And she's still on of my favorites list. There are so many great films she's made and she aged well. Here are my favorite Michelle Pfeiffer movies.

"Scarface"
The best performance is off course by Al Pacino and he made this film a succes. Michelle Pfeiffer looks very beautiful and is adequate in her role. This is one of the best movies in film history.

"The Witches of Eastwick"
This movie has something for anyone. Fantasy, horror, comedy, it's all there. This is a supernatural version of the 'The Battle of the Sexes'. Together with Cher and Susan Sarandon she plays one of the three witches that request for the perfect man, whom arrives in the form of Jack Nicholson's character Daryl.

"Tequila Sunrise"
It's not the most original story, but "Tequila Sunrise" is full of effective plot twists. Michelle Pfeiffer actually gives more depth to the story with her character and shows us that the woman in a love triangle is not just a trophy role.

"Dangerous Liaisons"
Michelle stars with Glenn Close and John Malkovich in this story about sex, seduction and deception set in 18th century France. It's a morality tale, but one that fascinates in its exposure of ego, vanity, intrigue and the war between the genders, subjects that are timeless in their relevance.

"The Fabulous Baker Boys"
It's a dreamy and romantic movie, yet cynical. The Bridges brothers are great in combination with Michelle. I don't think a lot of people saw this movie so it's underappreciated.

"Frankie and Johnny"
The second time Michelle Pfeiffer teamed up with Al Pacino. Also a movie that has been overlooked by many. It's a simple and genuine approach to different themes like yearning for love, fearing it and hoping to find it.

"Batman Returns"
Batman movies are great, even if you're not a fan of superhero movies or comic book adaptations. Michelle really gives it all in her role as Catwoman. She's the perfect woman for the job.

"The Age of Innocence"
Not a typical Scorsese movie and not his best work, but it definitely deserves a spot on this list. This is not for the people who like fast paced stories or the usual Scorsese stuff. If you liked the novel, you will probably enjoy the film as well.

"Wolf"
This is my favorite on the list. "Wolf" has always captivated me. It's a werewolf movie done in style. Nicholsons acting was refreshingly low-keyed and Michelle is not just perfect eye candy for the guys. She gives away a very solid performance.

"Dangerous Minds"
I remember that this movie was very popular when it came out. Now I'm a teacher the movie speaks even more to me then it did back then. Michelle Pfeiffer is fantastic in this film!

"One Fine Day"
Not her best, but a very enjoyable feel-good film, where she appears on George Clooney's side.

"What Lies Beneath"
I remember seeing this film in the cinema and it was pretty scary. I always like suspense movies, with a lot of scares in it. Harrison Ford is good, but Michelle is even better.

"I Am Sam"
I liked how this movie made you think about parenting. Sam was a great parent because he showed unconditional love to his daughter, but he couldn't teach her basic stuff like math. Rita could provide for her son perfectly, but barely had any time for him. Sean Penn stole the show, Michelle did very well too.

"White Orleander"
It's based on a terrific novel. Especially Michelle Pfeiffer gives away a stunning performance and this is just such a beautiful story about a teenagers journey through a series of foster homes.

"Stardust"
i didn't expect to like this movie. Don't you just love it when Michelle pretends to be a bitch? Or a witch in this case.

I didn't really like "Hairspray", it's one of the most disappointing musicals I saw. And although she paired up with Bruce Willis for "The Story of Us" it didn't make my list. I hope Michelle will go on and make more great movies, because she hasn't yet lost it.
