Ranking the Franchise - Star Wars

I rewatched all the movies in the “Star Wars” universe. Yes, all of them. I wanted to not only include the films from the “Star Wars” saga, but also films that spun-off from this series. Here is my ranking of all 11 films in the “Star Wars” franchise.

11. Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002)
“Attack of the Clones” is the second step in a trilogy that builds towards the original trilogy. It features a reunion of famous characters such as the Jedi Masters Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi, trapped on planets dominated by CGI. In between many dialogues with explanations and the very cringeworthy romance between Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala with them rolling in the grass laughing as the absolute low point of the entire franchise. The film does have a cool arena battle.

10. Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999)
Sixteen years after his last “Star Wars” film, George Lucas managed to attract a whole new generation of fans with a prequel. And he wanted it to be epic. He visualized a battle with thousands of robots, an underwater chase with monsters and an aerial car chase. This race is won by young Anakin, who will later become the dark leader Darth Vader, father of hero Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa. Jedi knight Qui-Gon Jinn discovers a lot of force in the boy and sees in him a long awaited leader. It’s not great, it leans mainly on the heavily use of CGI. The highlight of the film is Sith Lord Darth Maul, who only appears in this movie sadly enough.

9. Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Since Disney has been in charge of the “Star Wars” universe, every year a new film falls of the assembly line. This self-contained adventure revolves around the early years of smuggler Han Solo. Director Ron Howard turned it into a light-hearted action spectacle. Although the screenplay feels a bit rushed, it’s amusing to see how Han meets his pals Chewie and Lando and acquires the Millennium Falcon. “Solo: A Star Wars Story” is mainly enjoyable for nostalgic reasons.

8. Star Wars: Episode III – The Revenge of the Sith (2005)
In the third prequel of George Lucas’ “Star Wars” saga, Anakin Skywalker comes increasingly under the spell of the Dark Side of the Force. Still a bit of romance, but not as focused on like in “Attack of the Clones” thank goodness. It’s pretty cool to see Darth Vader being ‘born’, but it wasn't completely satisfactory.

7. Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
The Skywalker saga comes to a definitive end in this ninth episode. And it’s good that way, since the Force hasn’t been strong in the story anymore. In terms of action and spectacle, “The Rise of Skywalker” is a good film and is very entertaining. But it lacks a lot. Since it’s predecessor was directed by a different director than “The Rise of Skywalker”, who made a critical choice of killing off the main villain, J.J. Abrams was left without a villain. He came up with an illogical twist by bringing back a well-known character. It’s understandable that he had to go all out, since this is the final film. But it just didn’t work and it angered a lot of fans.

6. Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017)
The sequel to “The Force Awakens” was successful. And I liked it more after a second viewing. Characters that we met before, Rey, Kylo Ren, Finn and Po, get more depth. But it’s still Mark Hamill, from the original trilogy, who steals the show. The only thing I didn’t like about this film was the Finn and Rose storyline.

5. Star Wars: Episode VI – The Return of the Jedi (1983)
It’s the last film from the original “Star Wars” trilogy. After the empire has hit back hard in the second film, Luke Skywalker will have to confront Darth Vader. If it wasn’t for those damn ewoks, the film would be higher on this list. Otherwise, it’s a good finale to a trilogy.

4. Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015)
By now we can all agree that the prequel trilogy unbalanced the “Star Wars” franchise. This was restored by “The Force Awakens”. It’s a great start to a new, long-awaited, trilogy. Officially it’s the seventh part in the saga and it makes you forget about the prequels all together. Thirty-something years after Darth Vader and his Empire were eliminated, a new realm of darkness has emerged The First Order. Meanwhile, Luke has mysteriously disappeared. “The Force Awakens” does nod to the originals films, but in terms of spectacle, humor and adventure it’s its own movie. In the words of Han Solo: ‘Chewie, we’re home’.

3. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) “Rogue One” is presented as a stand-alone story within the “Star Wars” universe. The characters are indeed unknown and new to us, but the plot does fit in with the ongoing saga. Central is tough heroine Jyn Erso, who takes on Darth Vader and company in the period just before “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope”. The action, effects and scenery are all excellent, and the story is certainly not predictable.

2. Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977)
Little did director and screenwriter George Lucas know, when he kicked off the franchise in 1977 with “A New Hope”. He was about to create one of the most loved movie franchises ever. Fun fact is that there were many movie companies that expected such a film to flop. But it eventually yielded a good 460 million dollars in the US alone. The culture influences should not be underestimated. Almost everyone knows that The Force is, knows Darth Vader and knows what lightsabers sound like. Even if you didn’t see the films. “A New Hope” is a great first film in a much-loved franchise.

1. Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
This fantastic sequel to the first ever “Star Wars” film succeeds in surpassing the original. The characters are further elaborated, the special effects are, especially before 1980, really dazzling and the film has an unstoppable speed and is full of adventure and excitement. In this part, Luke Skywalker is further trained by the Jedi Master Yoda, while Han Sola and his mates are engaged in a guerilla war with the Empire. The film has one of the most memorable twist in movie history (which somehow almost everyone quotes wrong).

90s Movie Review - Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace

Director: George Lucas
Genre: Action/ Adventure/ Science Fiction/ Fantasy
Runtime: 133 minutes
Year: 1999
Starring: Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson, Jake Lloyd, Samuel L. Jackson, Natalie Portman, Frank Oz, Terence Stamp, Ray Park, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, Ian McDiarmid

Description: Two Jedi (Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor) escape a hostile blockade to find allies and comes across a young boy (Jake Lloyd) who may bring balance to the Force, but the long dormant Sith resurfaces to claim their old glory.

Review: Two Jedi are sent out to solve a violent trade dispute around the planet Naboo. During their mission, they meet a young slave who can restore the balance between good and evil.
For sixteen years, the patience of Star Wars fans was put to the test. Spiritual father George Lucas often let it slip that he was interested in a new trilogy, in which the transformation of Anakin Skywalker into the villain Darth Vader would be revealed. And that finally happened in 1999. With “Star Wars Episde I – The Phantom Menace” released, the reactions weren’t mild. The film was everything that the original trilogy wasn’t, the story of trade wars didn’t captivate and the character never did to us what Luke, Han and Leia did.
Yet, there is still plenty to enjoy in “The Phantom Menace”. New beautiful worlds have been created for the screen and the podrace is very entertaining. The final sword fight and its accompanied music remain impressive.
When fans saw this first film in the new trilogy, they knew it was never going to live up to the original series. But still, it’s entertaining and enjoyable enough.

Best "Star Wars" Characters

Since we celebrated Star Wars day on May 4th, I came up with the idea to list the best characters from the franchise. The characters on the list can be from all the Star Wars episodes, the spin-off films or TV series. Here are, what in my opinion are, the best characters in the “Star Wars” universe.

20. Kylo Ren
Born as Ben Solo, the son of Han and Leia, he was send to Luke Skywalker to become a Jedi. Because Han is afraid Ben has too much of his grandfather in him. Ben turns to the Dark Side of the Force, under the influence of Supreme Leader Snoke, but lacks the self-confidence to properly wield it. He is still struggling with his position.

19. Boba Fett
Boba Fett is an important character in the Star Wars saga. He is a clone of bounty hunter Jango Fett. Boba Fett becomes a bounty hunter, who we see working for Jabba the Hutt and Darth Vader. It’s actually a bit weird why Boba Fett is such a popular character, since he was barely in the original trilogy. But he’s an intergalactic bounty hunter with a cool armor and a rocket launcher. Need I say more?

18. K-2SO
Also called K or K-2, he is originally a Security Droid for the Empire, but was reprogrammed by Cassian Andor to work for the Rebellion. With that, he doesn’t obey as well, but combines it with wit and strength.

17. Darth Maul
He is definitely a man of few words. This Sith Lord with a double-bladed lightsaber made “The Phantom Menace” worth watching. Darth Maul radiates pure evil, even feeling comfortable in his own skin where he’s not hiding his face with a cloak or mask.

16. The Emperor
One of the greatest crooks and villains the Republic has ever known. For years he carried out his nefarious plans. He eliminates Jedi and the Republic and seizes power himself. He becomes a Sith Lord and his most important companion becomes Darth Vader. The Emperor, also known as Palpatine and Darth Sidious, is a tyrant and a dictator.

15. Poe Dameron
Poe is a leading X-Wing pilot during the war against the First Order. He and his droid BB-8 were send, by Leia, to retrieve information about Luke’s whereabouts. Poe is courageous, kind, rebellious and daring. Poe embodies Star Wars cool.

14. Rey
With a new trilogy, Star Wars needed a new hero to focus on. And this hero has the name Rey. She lives on Jakku and is a scavenger, in search for useful materials she can sell. When she meets droïd BB-8, she comes in contact with Finn. Eventually Rey starts a search for Luke Skywalker and she finds out she is more powerful then she thought. Her special bond with Ben Solo, aka Kylo Ren, makes it harder for Rey to control her powers and not choose the dark side of the Force.

13. Lando Calrissian
Lando Calrissian is a professional gambler, entrepreneur, smuggler and general at various points. He won the Millennium Falcon, but later lost it to Han Solo. They are friends, help each other out, but not without constant mutual trust. Lando mostly acts out of self-interest, but redeems himself.

12. Obi-Wan Kenobi
Obi-Wan Kenobi personifies the patience, wisdom and discipline required to harness the force. He is very cautious when bringing Luke along, since Luke’s father Anakin went to the dark side and Obi-Wan still carries regret for his failure with Anakin.

11. Luke Skywalker
Even though Han Solo is the favorite for most Star Wars fans, Luke Skywalker is the original trilogies actual hero. He goes through the most change over the course of events, going from a simple man to one of the most powerful Jedi that ever lived. Luke is temperamental and compassionate and he is always doubting if he’s using his powers for the best. He is on the brink of turning to the dark side, but eventually chose the Force.

10. R2-D2
Who would’ve thought that a robot just going bleep-bloop would win over our hearts. R2-D2 is Luke Skywalker’s wingman and the one delivering an important message to him, from Leia. With all these people around you, R2-D2 is probably the most certain thing you can rely on.

9. BB-8
Somehow BB-8 makes metal feel cuddly. He was an instant favorite when he first appeared in the new trilogy. And I can see why, since he is, like R2-D2, very loyal, helpful and somehow really funny.

8. Princess Leia
Luke and Han may be the central heroes in the original trilogy, but it’s Leia who provides its heart. Which doesn’t mean she isn’t capable with a blaster. And what’s so great about her love story with Han is that it feels like a relationship of equals. The two strongest-willed people in the galaxy realizing they’re nuts about one another. Leia eventually becomes the leader of the Rebellion, truly a woman to look up too.

7. Mando
No name, but because he is a Mandalorian they call him Mando. He is a lone-wolf mercenary with a big heart. He protects the ones who need it. As it turns out, Mando is one of the most complex characters in the Star Wars universe. We got to know him more intimately over an entire season of episodes than most of the characters in the entire movie series.

6. Darth Vader
Even though Darth Vader is the protagonist in the series, he is probably the character that everyone knows even if you haven’t seen any of the films. Darth Vader, born as Anakin Skywalker, was one of the greatest Jedi who ever lived. He converted to the dark side of the force and joins the Sith. And once he becomes Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker dies.

5. Chewbacca
Chewbacca, known as Chewie for friends, is Han Solo’s companion and co-pilot of the Millennium Falcon. He is a powerful warrior and a crucial role player. And even though we don’t understand a word he says and everyone in the Star Wars universe does, it makes him even more loveable. He looks like this tall and fierce animal, but he is in fact the biggest softie at heart. His anguished cry when Han Solo gets pulled into carbonite hits every nerve in our bodies.

4. C-3PO
Although he can somewhat be a bit annoying at times (he talks A LOT), C-3PO is the droid you need on your journey. Besides being fluid in over six million forms of communication, he has a moral compass and will stay loyal to his master in every situation, even though he isn’t adventurous himself. C-3PO forms an incredible duo with R2-D2 and their constant bickering is something we all love.

3. The Child
Also known as Baby Yoda, The Child won over everyone’s heart and made us all go awwww. And he isn’t only the cutest, The Child is probably the most important character in “The Mandalorian” TV series. Since everything revolves around him and is special powers.

2. Yoda
Yoda is a Jedi knight and is widely regarded as the embodiment of justice. In terms of wisdom, Yoda was the strongest Jedi ever. His reputation as the strongest Jedi master is well-deserved because of the large number of Jedi knights he has trained, like Luke Skywalker, Mace Windu and Count Dooku. Like most mentors, he doesn’t make it easy for his pupils, expecting them to figure out things on their own.

1. Han Solo
Han Solo is a classic libertarian with a heart of gold. The scoundrel-turned rebel leader is probably not the most unique character, but he comes across as a real human being. He has good qualities such as courage and camaraderie, but also has weaknesses in how he deals with rules and laws and how he can be smug. Han’s friendship with Chewbacca is endearing and his love for Leia is enviable.

Oldies Review - Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

Director: George Lucas
Genre: Action/ Adventure/ Science Fiction/ Fantasy
Runtime: 125 minutes
Year: 1977
Starring: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Alec Guinness, Peter Cushing, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, David Prowse, Kenny Baker, James Earl Jones, Phil Brown, Shelagh Fraser, Jack Purvis, Alex McCrindle, Eddie Byrne

Description: Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) joins forces with a Jedi Knight (Alec Guinness), a cocky pilot (Harrison Ford), a wookiee and two droids to save the galaxy from the Empire's world-destroying battle-station, while also attempting to rescue Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) from the evil Darth Vader.

Review: If you’re young or old, a fan or not. Everyone know the “Star Wars” series. The franchise knows many unique characters and all the great adventures. The first film, “Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope” is a legendary and timeless science fiction film and the start of what probably is the most popular movie franchise ever.
After Darth Vader intercepts Princes Leia’s spaceship, she asks Jedi knight Obi-Wan Kenobi for help. Together with the young Luke Skywalker and pilot Han Solo, Obi-Wan goes after Leia who is the leader of the rebel alliance.
In 1977 there was no advanced technology, something many film makers use nowadays. George Lucas had his fantasy, imagination and a creative crew. Although you can see that it’s an older film, the visual effects are still stunning.
Although the performances feel somewhat forced, it never bothers you. The interaction between Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher is fun to watch and it adds a lot of humor to the film.
“Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope” is a joy to watch, every time.

TV Show Review - The Mandalorian (Season 1)

Season: 1
Genre: Science Fiction/ Adventure/ Action
Number of episodes: 8
Year: 2019
Starring: Pedro Pascal, Carl Weathers, Gina Carano, Werner Herzog, Nick Nolte, Taika Waititi, Giancarlo Esposito

Description: The travels of a lone bounty hunter in the outer reaches of the galaxy, far from the authority of the New Republic.

Review: A ruthless bounty hunter who shoots, beats and punches himself through a treacherous universe. In "The Mandalorian", the Star Wars universe is introduced to the action, excitement and humor of a spaghetti western. The first episode of “The Mandalorian” alone raises the bar for the rest of the series and all the new Disney+ projects.
"The Mandalorian" takes place a few years after "Return Of The Jedi". After the second Death Star was blown up, and Darth Vader threw the emperor into a well (spoiler alert!), the Galactic Empire fell apart. Because of the victory of the rebels, people have regained their freedom, but have lost all their stability. Order is barely maintained and there is a deep economic crisis because the imperial currency has become worthless in one fell swoop. The new republic is still organizing itself and former members of the empire are working behind the scenes frantically to regain power. Golden times in short for criminals, smugglers and bounty hunters who don't ask too many questions.
"The Mandalorian" follows one of these shadowy figures and takes you into the messy underworld of the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) is a silent bounty hunter who ruthlessly takes on defaulters and cheaters. The Mandalorian's career takes an unexpected turn when a wealthy client sends him to a remote desert planet on a vague, super-lucrative mission: delivering him The Child, whose importance isn’t known yet.
Lawlessness, the chance of a huge fortune, shootings, open plains and a collection of factotums that try to trump each other... Deep inside, "The Mandalorian" is actually an old-fashioned spaghetti western, with the Mandalorian as the legendary 'Man Without a Name'. The period between "Return Of The Jedi" and "The Force Awakens" is very noisy, and because everyone is busy with his own ass, the threat of shoot-outs and betrayal is constantly present. The action is also a bit rawer than we are used to from Star Wars, a few bandits are killed in a very inventive way, but fortunately it never gets really graphic.
Pedro Pascal gives the Mandalorian a self-assured, alert 'swagger' without becoming theatrical. Very well-done and very important, since the main character remains pertinently masked. How the makers got the idea to cast Werner Herzog in a Star Wars series; we don't know, but it's a masterly move. The bounty hunter's mysterious client knows a lot more than he's letting go, and despite his kindness, an uncanny threat emanates from him. An unrecognizable Nick Nolte plays an important supporting role as a strict alien who helps the Mandalorian on his way. Also worth mentioning are Gina Carano, as the badd-ass Cara Dune, who helps out the Mandalorian in his journey to protect the Child.
A characteristic of Star Wars is that the created worlds usually look as if they were actually being lived in. Showrunner Jon Favreau has paid extra attention to this, it seems. The universe is in crisis, so the world of The Mandalorian looks particularly worn out. Vehicles spit smoke, buildings are temporarily patched up and a few stray stormtroopers walk around in worn armour. In the first episode there are quite a few 'easter eggs' that make Star Wars fans smile, without getting annoying.
"The Mandalorian" of course has a smaller budget than the Star Wars films, but due to the clever use of camera angles and indoor locations, the series does not fall short in most scenes. Because it looks like a million dollars.
I also want to use this as an ode to the new fandom that was started: The Child, or as the fans call him, Baby Yoda. Without a doubt the best thing that TV brought us this year.
The new Star Wars series is a fresh new insight into the worlds of Star Wars, and "The Mandalorian" keeps all promises, because it’s what us Star Wars fan really deserved. With the series, Star Wars takes a welcome detour through the Wild West and I can hardly wait for the sequel!

Top 5 Thursday: Kick-Ass Female Characters of the "Star Wars" Franchise

We still have to wait until the end of 2017 for a new “Star Wars” film and everyone is always focusing on the male characters of the films. I decided to list my favorite female characters of the franchise, because they matter just as much.

5. Padmé Amidala
Although the prequels are universally hated by many, there is one bright spot: The mother of Darth Vader’s kids, Padmé Amidala. Be honest, without her we wouldn’t have Luke or Leia.

4. Maz Kanata
She may have had only a minor role in “The Force Awakens”, but with her sharp tongue she left an unforgettable impression. Even on a hero like Han Solo. And she is also something to trust, because she was trusted to keep Luke Skywalker’s light saber safe.

3. Jyn Erso
Jyn isn’t a damsel in distress nor is she a great jedi. She is a rebel with a job to do. And nothing is going to stop her from doing it. Jyn is not afraid to fight dirty, hides her emotions and is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of hope alone.

2. Leia Organa
Leia is probably one of cinema’s most iconic characters ever to be created. A princess that fights her own battles.

1. Rey
Every new story needs a hero. And for this trilogy we get ours in the form of Rey. A scavenger from a desert planet. She eventually accepts the force within, while at first against the fate laid out before her.

100 Movie Challenge 2015 - # 169: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Director: J.J. Abrams
Genre: Science Fiction/ Action/ Fantasy/ Adventure
Runtime: 135 minutes
Year: 2015
Starring: Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Harrison Ford, Peter Mayhew, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Mark Hamill, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Max von Sydow, Greg Grunberg, Warwick Davis, Gwendoline Christie, Ken Leung, Simon Pegg

Description: Three decades after the defeat of the Galactic Empire, a new threat arises. The First Order attempts to rule the galaxy and only a ragtag group of heroes can stop them, along with the help of the Resistance.
Review: With new additions to many great franchises, like “Jurassic Park”, “Mad Max”, “The Terminator” and now “Star Wars”, 2015 has become an iconic year. Not every franchise found the right balance between nostalgia and an interesting new story. I’m so glad “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” turned out this good.
Off course there is the nostalgia, by bringing back Han, Leia and Chewbacca and seeing the Millenium Falcon makes our hearts skip a beat. And it’s clear that writer Lawrence Kasdan and director J.J. Abrams know the original trilogy very well. This is all combined very well with a good new story and new characters. I loved BB-8, the droid. He had a bit more character then R2-D2 had.
Stormtrooper Finn, X-wingpilot Poe Dameron and Jedi fangirl Rey are all great characters and are a breath of fresh air. They form an unusual yet diverse group of protagonists. Epecially Daisy Ridley as Rey. She was the star of the film, what a great discovery. The main villain is Kylo Ren, who seems to pay tribute to Darth Vader. He is a strong and believable villain. Captain Phasma isn’t though, she doesn’t get enough screen time to convince us.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is a great film, the movie we’ve all been waiting for. And we got exactly what we wanted and hoped for. Definitely a 2015 favorite.

Marry, Kiss, Cliff - Round 10

Round 10: Mark Zuckerberg (“The Social Network”), Luke Skywalker (“Star Wars”) and Dom Cobb (“Inception”)

Marry: I don’t really want to marry any of them. One is a douche, one has daddy issues and one has wife issues. I would have to go with Luke Skywalker, he at least has the force. And he knows Yoda, who is super awesome!
Kiss: Dom Cobb has a strange job and he never got over the death of his wife. Just a quick kiss and then run away even faster.

Cliff: I know Mark Zuckerberg is probably the most normal person of the three, but he’s kind of a douchebag. I know he’s loaded, but I don’t want to be with a rich douche.

Top 5 Thursday: Movie Entrances

Remember when we first met those great characters in those amazing movies? Well, then it’s an epic entrance. Here are my favorite epic movie entrances!

5. Indiana Jones in “Raiders of the Lost Ark”
Concealed in darkness for the entirety of the opening credits, this guy’s nothing more than a shadowy figure in a fedora. Then, when a gun’s raised at his back, Indy cracks the whip, disarms his would-be assassin

4. Darth Vader in “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope”
Smoke from a laser gun battle hangs in the air, the John Williams music playing and then there is Darth Vader. It takes my breath away ;)

3. T-800 in “Terminator 2: Judgment Day”
Stomping naked into a biker bar, he asks a biker for his clothes, boots and motorcycle, and roars off into the night. It’s super iconic and awesome!

2. Jack Sparrow in “Pirates of the Caribbean”
Captain Jack Sparrow sails aboard a ship that’s in the process of sinking. Not that Jack minds, the ship’s mast reaches docks just in time for him to step casually onto land. Hilarious every single time.

1. T-Rex in “Jurassic Park”
It starts with that cup of water on the dashboard, the sound of heavy footfalls and finally the T-Rex. Epic! And actually my favorite movie scene of all time!

They Almost Made the Top 5: John Doe in “Se7en”, Hannibal Lecter in “The Silence of the Lambs”, Chest bursting alien in “Alien”, Tina Carlyle in “The Mask”, The Joker in “The Dark Knight”, Jessica Rabbit in “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”, John Coffey in “The Green Mile”, Alex DeLarge in “A Clockwork Orange”
