Review: Judd Apatow directs a film, which can be streamed on Netflix now. A group of actors is stuck in a lockdown situation in a hotel, while trying to finish the movie “Cliff Beasts 6”. The trailer looked fun and Judd Apatow is one of the better comedy directors.

Unfortunately the film wasn’t well-received, by both critics and the audience. And I can actually agree with them and saying this is one of Apatow’s worst movies ever made.

Apatow was inspired by the evets of the filming of the movie “Jurassic World: Dominion” in which the entire cast was stuck for months in the heavy lockdown in Britain, filmind had to be stopped each time die to positive tests and the actors were given a stick up their nose daily.

So too in this comedy, with the fun-loving Karen Gillan playing the female lead. About the movie business, the film can be quite funny at times. But the overall films is just very unfunny. Moreover, the film runs a half hour too lone, and three are fewer and fewer laughs toward the very mediocre finale.

Top 5 Thursday: TV Detectives

I always like a good detective story. I like the mystery, the unknown and how it all unravels eventually. TV has brought us many great detectives and here are my favourites (and I’m not counting “CSI” because they are technically not detectives).

5. Fox Mulder (“The X-File”)

Cases of the paranormal. I always liked how Mulder did his job. He was the believer and his partner Dana Scully was a skeptic.

 

4. Sonny Crockett (“Miami Vice”)

In a sun-dappled '80s fantasy Miami where even the walls of the police station were painted neon, Sonny Crockett in impeccable clothes drove fast cars and sleek boats, going deep undercover each week in drug gangs, terrorist cells, and prostitution rings.

 

3. Olivia Benson (“Law and Order: SVU”)

This world is basically ruled by men, by Olivia Benson easily keeps with them. She channels her inner demons into an ongoing struggle to avenge the innocent.

 

2. Rust Cohle (“True Detective”)

You might as well call him Rust Cool. Far out the coolest detective ever. Although he’s a bit unconventional, it’s really hard not to like this guy.

 

1. Sherlock Holmes (“Sherlock”)

No one solves a murder mystery like Sherlock Holmes. If we could only see how this man thinks and how his brain works. I think no one will ever understand Sherlock Holmes fully.

100 Movie Challenge 2014 - # 14: Goats

Description: As Ellis (Graham Phillips) prepares to leave Tucson for his freshman year at an East Coast prep school, he also faces separating from his flaky, new age mother (Vera Farmiga) and the only real father he has ever known: Goat Man (David Duchovny).

Review: In this strange coming-of-age-comedy the young Ellis has to deal with a lot of things: a new school, his new age mom, his estranged dad and the Goat Man. The man who has been like a dad to him, more than his actual father. All these freaky and quirky characters make this a fresh and light dramedy.
Graham Phillips is touching as the young adult struggling with all the people in his life. David Duchovny makes you laugh with his vague character. Vera Farmiga is the weirdest one of the bunch, but she never overdoes it. The other characters don’t have enough depth to even care about them.The story is interesting, but it never seems to go towards an actual ending, which leaves you with an unsatisfied feeling.
“Goats” has heart, it’s a fun film when you’re in the mood for something that’s a bit strange. But a good kind of strange.

Movie Tip #16 - Return to Me

Director: Bonnie Hunt

Starring: David Duchovny, Minnie Driver, Bonnie Hunt, James Belushi, Carroll O'Connor, Robert Loggia, Joely Richardson

Description: Bob Rueland (David Duchovny), a Chicago building contractor, cherishes life with his veterinarian wife until she is tragically killed in an automobile accident. Meanwhile the family and friends of Grace Briggs (Minnie Driver), a waitress at a local Italian restaurant, are overjoyed when they learn that Grace will finally get a replacement heart (the heart of Bob's wife). Both Bob and Grace struggle to maintain normal lives after these traumatic events, until fate intervenes and brings them together.

Review: The reason that I love this movie so much is because of it's honesty. Both characters are so real and they share some heartwarming moments. My favourite line from the movie is when Bob says: "I miss Elisabeth, but I ache for Grace". That's a line I'll never forget. The story seems a little unrealistic, but the way the cast brought it you just go with it. Bonnie Hunt directed it and was a co-writer. She's done a great job doing both. She made Grace and Bob one of my all time favourite movie couples and "Return to Me" as one of my favourite romantic movies.
