Netflix Friday - Volume 66

Some Netflix film tips for the weekend! And there is something for everyone, since I picked a movie for all the different genres.
 

Action: Bad Boys II (2003)
Two loose-cannon narcotics cops (Will Smith, Martin Lawrence) investigate the flow of Ecstasy into Florida from a Cuban drug cartel.
 

Drama: Creed II (2018)
Under the tutelage of Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), newly crowned heavyweight champion Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) faces off against Viktor Drago, the son of Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren)
 

Comedy: The Spy Who Dumped Me (2018)
Audrey (Mila Kunis) and Morgan (Kate McKinnon) are best friends who unwittingly become entangled in an international conspiracy when one of the women discovers they boyfriend who dumped her was actually a spy.
 

Animation: Minions (2015)
Minions Stuart, Kevin and bob are recruited by Scarlett Overkill (Sandra Bullock), a supervillain who alongside her inventor husband Herb, hatches a plot to take over the world.
 

Romance: The Guernsey Literal Society (2018)
In the aftermath of World War II, a writer (Lily James) forms an unexpected bond with the residents of Guernsey Island when she decides to write a book about their experiences during the war.
 

Horror: Blood Red Sky (2021)
A woman with a mysterious illness is forced into action when a group of terrorists attempt to hijack a transatlantic overnight flight.
 

Science Fiction: The Hunger Games (2012)
Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) voluntarily takes her younger sister’s place in the Hunger Games: a televised competition in which two teenagers from each of the twelve Districts of Panem are chosen at random to fight to the death.
 

Crime: Basille Day (2016)
A young pickpocket (Richard Madden) and a unruly CIA agent (Idris Elba) team up on an anti-terrorist mission in France.
 

Thriller: Hush (1998)
A couple (Gwyneth Paltrow, Jonathan Schaech) with jobs and apartment in New York City, decide to move to his mom’s farm, get married and have the baby there. They can also make the changes to get better price for the farm. However, there’s something seriously wrong with the mom.
 

Documentary: Pray Away (2021)
Former leaders of the “pray the gay away” movement contend with the aftermath unleashed by their actions, while a survivor seeks healing and acceptance from more tna a decade of trauma.
 

Family: Goosebumps (2015)
A teenager (Dylan Minnette) teams up with the daughter (Odeya Rush) of young adult horror author R.L. Stine (Jack Black) after the writer’s imaginary demons are set free on the town of Madison, Delaware.

Netflix Friday - Volume 43

Some Netflix film tips for the weekend! And there is something for everyone, since I picked a movie for all the different genres.
 

Action: S.W.A.T. (2003)
An imprisoned drug kingpin (Olivier Martinez) offers a huge cash reward to anyone that can break him out of police custody, and only the L.A.P.D.’s Special Weapons and Tactics team can prevent it.
 

Drama: News of the World (2021)
A civiv war vetera agrees to deliver a girl (Helena Zengel), taken by the Kiowa people years ago, to her aunt and uncle, against her will. They travel hundreds of miles and face grave dangers as they search for a place that either can call home.
 

Comedy: The Dictator (2012)
The heroic story of a dictator (Sacha Baron Cohen) who risked his life to ensure that democracy would bever come to the country he so lovingly oppressed.
 

Animation: Spirited Away (2001)
During her family’s move to the suburbs, a sullen 10-year-old girl wanders into a world ruled by gods, witches, and spirits, and where humans are changed into beasts.
 

Romance: Hitch (2005)
A smooth-talking man (Will Smith) falls for a hardened columnist (Eva Mendes) while helping a shy accountant (Kevin James) woo a beautiful heiress Amber Valetta).
 

Horror: Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013)

Crime: If Beale Street Could Talks (2018)
A young woman (Kiki Layne) embraces her pregnancy while she and her family set out to prove her childhood friend and lover innocent of a crime he didn’t commit.
 

Thriller: The Debt (2012)
In 1965, three Mossad Agents (Jessica Chastain, Sam Worthington, Marton, Csokas) cross into East Berlin to apprehend a notorious Nazi war criminal. Thirty years later, the secrets the agents (Helen Mirren, Tom Wilkenson, Ciáran Hinds) share come back to haunt them.
 

Documentary: Roll Red Roll (2018)
An account of a notable sexual assault that took place in Steubenville, Ohio in 2012, and the role that social media played in the crime and on the community.
 

Family: Goosebumps (2015)

100 Movie Challenge 2016 - # 142: Goosebumps

Description: A teenager teams up with the daughter of young adult horror author R. L. Stine (Jack Black) after the writer's imaginary demons are set free on the town of Madison, Delaware.

Review: Jack Black is the perfect actor for a scary family film like “Goosebumps”, so it’s no surprise that he portrays writer R.L. Stine. He plays a fictional version of the real life author of the book series “Goosebumps”. Here he is a hermit, protecting his daughter Hannah. The new neighbor Zach is very curious about Stine and his daughter and just simply can’t accept that she can not leave the house. But when releasing Hannah, he releases a lot more.
From the beginning the movie is fast paced and has humor. Jillian Bell, as Zach’s aunt, brings some awkward family humor to the show. The young actors are solid and Jack Black is just enjoyable as R.L. Stine.
We don’t have to wait long for the first monsters to appear, that we all know from the populat books. It’s a bit like “Night at the Museum” or “Jumanji”. The horror is mild, because it’s supposed to be suitable for a younger audience. But it can get scary for the really young kids.
Zah and Hanna are the heroes of the story. Their nerdy companion Champ is not as fun. He is supposed to make it all a but lighter, but instead he’s a pretty annoying character that overreacts to every situation. At least Zach and Hannah act more realistic.
It’s actually very smart to use this story for the movie, because how do you pick from all those books. Instead the most iconic monsters from Stine’s book come to life and it works surprisingly well. I liked “Goosebumps” more than I expected and it wasn’t as bad as I thought. It’s an entertaining film, especially if you read the books as a kid.
