Movie Review - Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Director:
Tim Burton
Genre: Comedy/ Fantasy/ Horror
Runtime: 105 minutes
Year: 2024
Starring: Michael Keaton, Catherine O’Hara, Winona Ryder, Jenna Ortega, Monica Belucci, Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux, Danny DeVito

Description: After a family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), Lydia’s (Winona Ryder) life is turned upside down when her teenage daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega), accidentally opens the portal to the Afterlife.

Review: “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is the long-awaited sequel to “Beetlejuice” from 1988. Lydia Deetz has grown from melancholy goth-teenager to mother with her own television show in which she is a spiritual medium. The she receives word of her father’s death. Together with her stepmother Delia and daughter Astrid, she returns to her haunted house where she grew up. And Beetlejuice is fully aware of it.

Most sequels, that happen so long after the original, make the same mistake. The same story told a just a bit different. When there are some things that you might recognize from the first film, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is completely different from its predecessor.

Some characters we already knew from the previous film. Besides Beetlejuice and his trusty assistant Bob, we see Lydia and Delia Deetz again. But new characters are being introduced as well. Astrid, Lydia’s daughter, portrayed by Jenna Ortega. Ortega fits into Tim Burton’s universe like she was always meant to be apart of it. Her character might be a bit stereotypical, grumpy, rebellious teenager. But she is a nice addition, still. Justin Theroux, as Lydia’s new boyfriend, is also a welcome new character. Kind of a disgusting new-age attention seeker, but really funny. Monica Bellucci’s character Delores doesn’t really add anything. When she is introduced, in a dark but fun scene, she seems like a very important character. But at one point, when she enters a scene again, you realize you had almost forgotten she was also apart of the story. She is supposed to be a huge treat, but she doesn’t feel that way in the end. Willem Dafoe’s character is kinda fun though, an actor/ detective called Wolf Jackson. But his role is fairly small as well. Jeffrey Jones, who played Charles Deetz in the original, doesn’t return due to a scandal, but his character does return in a different form. And I thought Burton was quite clever with this. Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara are all really good, as they were in the first film.

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” did not disappoint. The cast, the jokes, the beautiful images and the physical special effects (including a bit of stop-motion) makes it an entertaining and fun film. But only if you have seen and loved “Beetlejuice” as well. Praise to Tim Burton to not recycling a plot, but actually giving us an original plot. With the characters we’ve came to love so long ago, giving them a new, crazy, creepy and funny adventure.

Movie Review - Miller's Girl

Director:
Jade Halley Bartlett
Genre: Drama
Runtime: 93 minutes
Year: 2024
Starring: Martin Freeman, Jenna Ortega, Bashir Sallahudin, Gideon Adlon, Dagmara Dominczyk, Christine Adams

Description: A creative writing assignment yields complex results between a teacher (Martin Freeman) and his talented student (Jenny Ortega).

Review: Jonathan Miller is a writer whose debut novel wasn’t a huge success and now hides out as a creative writing teacher at a Tennessee high school. His marriage to a successful writer is odd to say the least.

Meanwhile, his student, 18-year-old Cairo Sweet, manages to peak Miller’s interest with her writing talent. You know, from their first meeting, that things won’t end well.

In her feature debut, director Jade Halley Bartlett opts for easy-going effects, barely fleshed-out characters and an ending lacking inspiration. This film was very boring, too cliché and a waste of great talent. Jenna Ortega is such a talented actress, but she never really convinces as the young temptress she becomes. And Martin Freeman really feels out of place in his role. Miller wife, portrayed by  Dagmara Dominczyk, delivers a terrible performance. She is such a caricature, she doesn’t feel like an actual person.

I paid to see this film, don’t make the same mistake. This is a boring, uninspiring, cliché film and I would not recommend.

Movie Review - Scream VI

Director:
Matt Bettenelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett
Genre: Horror/ Mystery/ Thriller
Runtime: 122 minutes
Year: 2023
Starring: Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Courtney Cox, Hayden Panettiere, Tony Revolori, Dermot Mulroney, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Jack Champion, Liana Liberato, Josh Segarra

Description: In the next installment, the survivors of the Ghostface killings leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter in New York City.

Review: The survivors of the Woodsboro attack have moved to New York, but a new Ghostface is also coming to make this city unsafe.

“Scream”(2022), really just the fifth installment in the series, had a double feature. As the characters in the film state, it is a ‘requel’, a sequel and reboot merged together. It worked as a fresh start, but was just as much a continuation of all the previous parts. This way, fans, both old and new, could get something out of the film. With “Scream VI”, Woodsboro is officially in the past. This small town is traded in for New York.

With the change of scenery, the so-called formula is dressed up just a little differently again. New York is a busy city with much more going on. This makes the situations more exciting than usual. A crowded subway, a small shop or sneaking into a house in broad daylight to kill someone. It’s all possible. Ghostface hasn’t been this ruthless in ages and the murders are more bloody than before.

Right from the opening scene, you expectations are played with. You know how a Scream movie opens, but this time we go longer than usual and are presented with a fun twist. After that, “Scream VI” takes its time to provide character development for the four survivors of the previous movie. They all deal with the traumatic experience differently. The sister duo, Tara and Sam, played by Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera, impress the most.

The sixth installment in the series manages the balance between honoring the old and taking a new direction well. The meta and satirical tone is still present, which I always liked about all the films, such as the “rules of the game”.

“Scream VI” is a bit more serious than some of its predecessors and the film makes a statement that the old characters are no longer needed to continue this franchise. Enjoyable watch, solid enough, fun twist at the end, a bit over the top maybe. But if you liked the previous films, you will have a good time watching this too. And I think there are move Scream films to follow after this sixth installment.

TV Show Review - Wednesday (Season 1)

Season: 1
Genre: Comedy/ Drama/ Mystery/ Crime
Number of episodes: 8
Year: 2022

Starring:
Jenna Ortega, Gwendoline Christie, Emma Myers, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Christina Ricci, Luis Guzman, Hunter Doohan, Percy Hynes White, Jamie McShane

Description: Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) attempts to master her emerging psychic ability by solving a mystery at her new school.

Review: Just a year ago, the last adaptation of the well-known Addams Family stories released in the form of an animated film. This film didn’t succeed to bring the world to life. At least not as much as the creators of “Wednesday”, which focuses on the daughter of the Addams family.

With the knowledge that Tim Burton directed half of the episodes, it can come as no surprise that the series is visually stunning and incredibly interesting. The character Wednesday is notorious for her penchant for the monochromatic and yet the world around her is colorful in a special way, completely true to Burton’s style.

The series is set at Nevermore Academy, where Wednesday’s parents met when they were young. After Wednesday unleashes a bunch of piranhas in her high school pool, Morticia and Gomez decide it’s best for Wednesday to go to Nevermore. At this school, supernatural misfits meet. Whereas the Addams family was always out of place in previous versions, the change of scenery allows us a fresh look into their own world.

Even for viewers unfamiliar with Addams Family traditions, “Wednesday” has plenty to offer, as the series is still interesting as a standalone. Fans of the mystery genre of the supernatural will be in for a treat. We follow Wednesday Addams in the role of an amateur detective as she tries to solve multiple murders around Nevermore Academy against all warnings while trying to find her place in the world.
By the end of this season, the major storyline surrounding the murderous monster is neatly wrapped up, but jokingly introduces new questions and mysteries that could be fleshed out in a second season.

Jenna Ortega plays the role of Wednesday and knocks it out of the park. She is so good in her role, really captures her character and it looks like no other actress could have done it better. I also loved seeing Chrisina Ricci in supporting role, she played Wednesday in the 1991 film. And Gwendoline Christie as the head master of Nevermore Academy is fantastic as well.

“Wednesday” is such a good series, I can’t wait for the second season to start.
