Review: In “Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond”, we see behind-the-scene footage of the making of “Man on the Moon”, where Jim Carrey portrayed real-life comedian Andy Kaufman, with Carrey giving in-depth commentary of his experiences.

During the four months of filming the 1999 movie “Man on the Moon”, we get a glimpse of Jim Carrey’s portrayal of Andy Kaufman. In those four months, Carrey never steps out of his role as Kaufman (and his alter ego Tony Clifton_. The cast and crew go crazy with him, and occasionally the audience does too. But at the same time it is an ode to the effort actors put into a role.

It's a shocking yet inspiring look behind the scenes of this Andy Kaufman biopic. With Jim Carrey himself looking back at this period. Which was decisive for his later life.

Movie Review - Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Description: After a family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), Lydia’s (Winona Ryder) life is turned upside down when her teenage daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega), accidentally opens the portal to the Afterlife.

Review: “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is the long-awaited sequel to “Beetlejuice” from 1988. Lydia Deetz has grown from melancholy goth-teenager to mother with her own television show in which she is a spiritual medium. The she receives word of her father’s death. Together with her stepmother Delia and daughter Astrid, she returns to her haunted house where she grew up. And Beetlejuice is fully aware of it.

Most sequels, that happen so long after the original, make the same mistake. The same story told a just a bit different. When there are some things that you might recognize from the first film, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is completely different from its predecessor.

Some characters we already knew from the previous film. Besides Beetlejuice and his trusty assistant Bob, we see Lydia and Delia Deetz again. But new characters are being introduced as well. Astrid, Lydia’s daughter, portrayed by Jenna Ortega. Ortega fits into Tim Burton’s universe like she was always meant to be apart of it. Her character might be a bit stereotypical, grumpy, rebellious teenager. But she is a nice addition, still. Justin Theroux, as Lydia’s new boyfriend, is also a welcome new character. Kind of a disgusting new-age attention seeker, but really funny. Monica Bellucci’s character Delores doesn’t really add anything. When she is introduced, in a dark but fun scene, she seems like a very important character. But at one point, when she enters a scene again, you realize you had almost forgotten she was also apart of the story. She is supposed to be a huge treat, but she doesn’t feel that way in the end. Willem Dafoe’s character is kinda fun though, an actor/ detective called Wolf Jackson. But his role is fairly small as well. Jeffrey Jones, who played Charles Deetz in the original, doesn’t return due to a scandal, but his character does return in a different form. And I thought Burton was quite clever with this. Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara are all really good, as they were in the first film.

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” did not disappoint. The cast, the jokes, the beautiful images and the physical special effects (including a bit of stop-motion) makes it an entertaining and fun film. But only if you have seen and loved “Beetlejuice” as well. Praise to Tim Burton to not recycling a plot, but actually giving us an original plot. With the characters we’ve came to love so long ago, giving them a new, crazy, creepy and funny adventure.

Description: A group a male friends become obsessed with five mysterious sisters who are sheltered by their strict, religious parents (James Woods, Kathleen Turner) in suburban Detroit in the mid-1970s.

Review: Cecilia Lisbon is only 13-years-old when she attempts suicide for the first time. She and her four sisters live a very protected life with their strict and religious parents.

Director Sofia Coppola manages to show the audience what this strict life can do to teenage girls. The five sister all deal with it in a different way, eventually ending in the same fate.

It’s beautifully filmed and it focused on the sisters. The story told from the perspective of the boy next door, twenty five years later.

Review: Aurora and her daughter Emma are all by themselves after their husband/ father passes away. Emma is about to get married to Flap, a man Aurora finds not to be right for her. Flap also seems to hate Aurora. While Emma marries him, seeing that he is boorish and unfaithful, Aurora tries to live a life without her daughter. Eventually falling for her next door neighbor Garrett.

“Terms of Endearment” won 5 Academy Awards in 1984. Shirley MacLaine won for her role as Aurora and Jack Nicholson for his portrayal of Garrett. But it also took home the Best Picture Award, which I really don’t understand. Unpopular opinion, but I did not like this movie and I don’t believe it’s really that good. The fact that it has drama in it and I did not care about a single character, says enough. This is one of those Oscar-winning movies that I just can’t get behind.

Review: I grew up watching Looney Tunes cartoons. I loved them: Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Road Runner, Sylvester, Taz, you name it. In 1996, they decided to combine animation with live-action for the movie “Space Jam”. Legendary basketball played Michael Jordan was enlisted as the lead actor, which results in a fun family film in which the hero of the Chicago Bulls and the Looney Tunes join forces.
When tiny aliens from Moron Mountain come to Earth to capture the Looney Tunes, the ever wise Bugs Bunny decides to challenge them to a game of basketball. If the Looney Tunes win, they don’t have to go to Moron Mountain to entertain the public, but if they lose, they are doomed to eternal slavery. But Bugs and his friends see no problem, since the aliens are a fist high. Until the little creatures transform into the Monstars, a team of giant monsters who stole the basketball skills from famous players. And the Looney Tunes don’t see how they can win anymore. Therefore, Bugs enlists the help of Michael Jordan.
When small and sneaky aliens from Moron Mountain come to Earth to capture the Looney Tunes, the ever wise Bugs Bunny decides to challenge them to a game of basketball. If the Looney Tunes win, they don't have to go to Moron Mountain to entertain the public, but if they lose, they are doomed to eternal slavery. A team of professional basketball players who have no problem chopping up the Looney Tunes.
“Space Jam” is mostly fun and nonsensical. Like in the cartoons we all grew up with, almost everything is possible in their world. It’s still, after so many years, an entertaining family film.

90s Movie Review - The Rainmaker

Review: Writer John Grisham is a star. A film adaptation of one of his legal thrillers guarantees commercial success. That must have been the motivation for Francis Ford Coppola. But with “The Rainmaker” he delivers a pretty standard courtroom drama.
John Grisham’s books have sold millions of copies worldwide, he is a very successful author. And many of his films have been turned into movies, also successfully. Films like “The Firm”, “The Client” and “The Chamber” are all movie I personally enjoyed, just as much as the books.
“The Rainmaker” centers around Rudy Baylor, a nearly graduated lawyer who haas the best interests of the correct person at heart. He is looking for work in Memphis, hoping to become a so-called ‘rainmaker’: a lawyer who makes the money. Both for the client and for himself, because in the U.S.A. a third of the compensation goes to the lawyer. Rudy initially starts at a little law firm ran by a freebooter who doesn’t take the law too seriously. as so-called ‘ambulance-chasers’, they sour hospitals looking for victims who might want to file a lawsuit against the instigators of the harm.
One of them is Mrs. Black, the mother of a young leukemia patient. She files a lawsuit against the insurance company Great Benefit, because it refuses to pay for an operation that could save her son’s life. Meanwhile Rudy decides to set up his own firm, along with colleague Deck Shifflet, a unlicensed lawyer who has failed his court exam several times. a battle ensues between Rudy and Great Benefit.
The film is structured very standard. There are some strong performances, because “The Rainmaker” has a great cast. But overall the film doesn’t have anything special to offer. It’s a solid film, just not the exciting.

Review: “Hercules”, in 1997, was on of the last films to fall within what is known as the Disney Renaissance. The Disney Renaissance was the period from 1989 to 1999 when Disney returned to making successful films based on well-known stories. In 1997 Disney came up not with a fairy tale, but with the Greek myth of Hercules.
It is a typical Disney film in which the story is completely different from what is actually is. In the Greek myth, Hercules is actually a baby from an extramarital relationship. Not so much a Disney theme. So, this film begins with the welcoming of Hercules into the family.
Everyone is happy about the birth of Hercules, except for Hades; the God of the underworld. Hades wants to seize power on Olympus, but he us afraid Hercules will interfere with these plans. To prevent this he sends his henchmen Pain and Panic in the middle of the night. They must make Hercules immortal and then kill him. They succeed in making him immortal, but fail in killing him.
We jump in time and see that Hercules has continued to grow up with the farm couple that found him as a baby. Because he cannot handle his own powers, everyone is afraid of Hercules. In fact, he is known as a big klutz who only brings back luck and breaks stuff. Hercules struggles, but after finding out he is the son of Zeus he is told he can regain his divinity when he proves that he is a true hero. Zeus sends Hercules to Phil, to train him to become a hero.
You don’t need any knowledge of Greek myths to watch this film. I think it’s best, because the story is anything but accurate and the “Disney-fied” the hell out of it. It’s a stunning film, with great songs, especially “Go the Distance”. Perhaps not one of Disney’s very best, but certainly entertaining.

10s Movie Review - Jumanji: The Next Level

Review: After their adventure in the world of Jumanji, the students Spencer, Martha, Bethany and Fridge try to pick up their lives again. However, Spencer is struggling with his life as a student in new York and longs for a new adventure in which he can take on the form of the tough professor Bravestone. When Spencer goes missing, his friends soon know what happened. Especially when they discover that Spencer has never thrown away the videogame Jumanji. All they can do to save their friend is venture into the world of Jumanji again. But this time, not only the students get sucked in, also Spencer’s grandfather and his elderly friend join the adventure, and Bethany is left behind. Once again, they have to join forces as their old avatars in order to return from the world of Jumanji.
“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” was one of the biggest surprises. A movie I thought I would hate, but actually came to love. So to repeat that success, Sony Pictures (of course) created a sequel. And although it’s much of the same, “Jumanji: The Next Level” still offers a lot of fun-filled and action packed scenes.
With the same game, the same avatars and the same students its more of the same. But the creators made a few adjustments to make it a bit fresher. Danny DeVito and Danny Glover are added and they end up in the avatars that Dwayne Johnson and Kevin hart embody. I’m not the world’s biggest Kevin Hart fan and he was my least favorite in the first film. Because he was being his loud an annoying self, instead of another character. Here his character is taken over by an elderly, slow-talking man that over-explains things. And I loved that! He actually outshines Dwayne Johnson for once.
“Jumanji: The Next Level” is not a necessary sequel, but a welcome one. Because I had tons of fun watching it. Even though it was much of the same, I enjoyed this film.

Movie Reviews - Dumbo

Description: A young elephant, whose oversized ears enable him to fly, helps save a struggling circus. But when the circus plans a new venture, Dumbo and his friends discover dark secrets beneath its shiny veneer.

Review: Disney is trying go through their animations quickly, into creating live-action versions of them. In 2019 alone, we will get 4 of them. The first this year is “Dumbo”, about the little flying elephant. And it’s not a remake, because Tim Burton used his creative mind well.
What the original animation and this version have in common, is that they are both based off of the same children’s book. Director Burton is known for his visual stories with a dark edge and gave this story his signature touch. “Dumbo” has a darker and more cynical look at the circus world.
Circus director Max Medici is trying to keep his head above water in these crisis times, to keep his circus going. His main attraction was his horse act, but he had to sell the horses. When war veteran Holt returns, missing one arm, he is reunited with his children Milly and Joe. They find comfort now he’s back, because in the meantime their mother had died and their horse act has been removed from the program.
Max wants the elephants to be the major act now and he managed to buy a pregnant female. When the baby is born, Max thinks it’s an ugly creates. Baby Dumbo, what they call him later, is born with huge ears and many people mock him for it. But Milly and Joe see something special and find out that Dumbo can actually fly.
Visually this film is beautiful, as we are used to from burton. Dumbo looks adorable. His level of cuteness is very high! What also looked great was Dreamland, the giant circus by Max’ competition V.A. Vandevere. It looks like a typical steampunk fantasy world by Burton and I loved the look of it.
Not only the visuals are amazing. Burton managed to combine it with a heart warming story which had a sincere moral about confidence and the power of money. And there are many moments where you feel warm insight or need tissues for tears. Because even though it has a lot of happy moments, it is a pretty sad story as well.
Dumbo has to share his stage with some human characters and their side stories. They don’t all work, like the story of Eva Green’s character. It’s neglected a bit, which makes it flat.
I was surprised by the many negative reviews, because I think it was a beautiful film. It looks amazing and has a good story. Burton used his dreamy style to turn it into a live-action film and I think he did a wonderful job.

100 Movie Challenge 2014 - # 5: The Lorax

Description: In the walled city of Thneed-Ville, where everything is artificial and even the air is a commodity, a boy named Ted (Zac Efron) hopes to win the heart of his dream girl, Audrey. When he learns of her wish to see a real tree, Ted seeks out the Once-ler (Ed Helms), a ruined old businessman outside of town in a stark wasteland. Upon hearing of how the hermit gave into his greed for profits and devastated the land over the protests of the Lorax (Danny DeVito), Ted is inspired to undo the disaster. However, the greedy Mayor of Thneed-Ville, Aloysius O'Hare (Rob Riggle), has made his fortune exploiting the environmental collapse and is determined to stop the boy from undermining his business.

Review: The movie is based on a story by the popular children’s book author Dr. Seuss, so a lot was expected. And one of the directors, Chris Renaud, also made “Despicable Me”.
In the futuristic town Thneed-ville all the green has disappeared, there is not a three left. The richest man in town earns his money to sell fresh air to the people. Young Ted wants to find out why and he goes outside the city walls. He meets the Once-ler and he can tell him everything about it, for instance who the Lorax is.
The original story leads to an unoriginal film. A lot of the material has been seen before. An animated hero with a light form of ADD, singing fishes, slapstick humor and clumbsy and cute animals. Although this isn’t all very original, the makers deliver an inspiring movie though. There are some great jokes, fantastic sing-a-long songs and it all looks very colorful and fanciful. With that “The Lorax” has a good message as well, which is the true essence.
“The Lorax” is easy to watch, but also just as forgettable. It doesn’t live up to the standards of “Despicable Me” and “Horton Hears a Who”.
