Movie Review - Tenet

Review: That Christopher Nolan would one day make a film about time travel was of course a matter of time (no pun intended). When early in “Tenet” a simple clock is turned back an hour, it seems like a conscious wink from the always time juggling filmmaker. But you can also see it as an indication that the time travel rules used will be a bit more complex than turning back the clock. The general gimmick is presented relatively quickly: a reversed experience of time. Since Nolan’s oeuvre can be summarized as an intellectual puzzle of macho subjects, we should not be surprised that this concept is explained by a means of a pistol: as a shot, bullets are not fired, but go back into the firearm. But this technology also appears to be applicable to people, with all its complications.
Now Christopher Nolan is far from being the first to use such a narrative element. Tenet are consistently in reverse mode. In their own experience they do everything normal, but anyone who moves forward in time sees them walking backwards and hears them talking backwards (lost me yet?).
“Tenet” is in everything a pure Nolan film: a grand action spectacle about well-dressed men who deal with serious matters, seasoned with bombastic music and well-crafted stunts, wrapped up in a complex puzzle. But while Nolan still managed to put all these elements perfectly to his hand in “Inception”, this time he may have overplayed his hand a little. This way, the difficulty has been increased to such an extent that after a while t becomes difficult to connect al the plot points. The time travel aspect would suffice for a complex narrative, but “Tenet” has been set up as a spy thriller full of shadowy players and double agendas, which doesn’t exactly make it easier to understand. A war between the present and the future? Such ambition compels admiration, but it’s likely that the viewers gradually loses sight of exactly what’s at stake.  
The film becomes a lot easier to watch when the spy plot is released slightly and is used more on the time travel elements. The it turns out that the complexity is not much greater than that of a time travel movie “Déjà Vu”. Although Nolan makes sure that the viewers will have to keep puzzling until the end.

The film has some amazing scenes, like a car chase scene or a fight scene between two people who experience each time in a different way.
You might say that Nolan was over-ambitious and over-complicated this film. For me, the complexity of the film is reason enough to rewatch “Tenet” someday, because I really want to fully understand this film. It’s a beautiful looking movie, with a formula that is starting to show some cracks, but even a Nolan film that isn’t perfect, is still worth watching.

WEEK 26: A MOVIE MADE BY CHRISTOPHER NOLAN

Description: A team of explorers travel through a wormhole in space in an attempt to ensure humanity’s survival.

Review: Spaceman Cooper leaves his two children, when he decides to take part in a space mission to find an alternative planet for the decaying Earth. Time is relative, according to Einstein, so a trip to the first planet they visit takes Cooper an hour or three, but in our perception of time more than twenty-three years. Back at the base station, Cooper sees a video of his family. In a few minutes he sees that his family has dramatically changed. Daughter Murp, is as old as him now and son Tom is a father himself. “Interstellar” leans heavily on family ties, which gives it a huge emotional load.
The story is very complex and it is best to just let it take you away. Cooper became a farmer, after a traumatic crash, since Earth is in dire need of food. Another planet offers the only solution, but mankind has stopped space travel. At school they even learn that the mission to the moon was only a clever propaganda move. Cooper’s clever daughter Murphy think’s she is getting signals from her bookcase. What and who is unclear. Martians? Gravity? But Murphy thinks it’s a ghost. However, this silent force and a dust storm lead Cooper and his daughter to a remote space lab.
Christopher Nolan and his writer brother Jonathan are both men with great ideas and an unparalleled ability to transform their vision into images. And you can see that in “Interstellar”. You have to really pay attention or know a bit about physics to fully understand the complicated concept of black holes, wormholes, fourth and fifth dimension and the theory of relativity. Each time you are reassured with the realization that in the end, it is the dramatic aspect that the Nolan brothers want to focus on. Only Christopher Nolan knows how to combine all these difficult angles with compelling drama and spectacular space trips. Surprisingly, they are often very simple principles such as love and loss. “Interstellar” is overall a very ambitious movie. It’s clear that movies like “2001: A Space Odyssey” or “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” were major inspirations for Nolan.
“Interstellar” is anything but a simple space adventure, a film you really have to focus on and let yourself be overwhelmed by. And the soundtrack is one of the best in years. A fantastic film, that doesn’t feel like it’s almost three hours long.

80s Movie Review - Jaws: The Revenge

Description: Chief Brody's widow (Lorraine Gary) believes that her family is deliberately being targeted by another shark in search of revenge.

Review: In this series of shark films, the original “Jaws” is the best and will probably never be topped. They just get worse. And to be honest, “Jaws: The Revenge” is one of the worst movies I ever saw.
The plot for the third film was already pretty dumb, but there is no logic at all here. We again follow the Brody family. When one of the sons of the family gets killed by a shark, Ellen knows for sure that the shark is out for revenge. Because her now deceased husband Martin killed two sharks. Ellen flees to her other son who lives in the Bahama’s, where the shark follows her (!!!) and has is out for her and her family.
This plot is ridiculous. Sharks aren’t vengeful and they sure as hell don’t follow people across the globe. And Ellen somehow has a telekenetic connection with this shark, because whenever the shark is near or doing something, Ellen ‘feels it’. And she also has flashbacks of Martin dealing with the shark, but she was never present during those happenings. So how can she see them?
Michael Caine is even in this film. I mean Michael ‘freakin’ Caine. He is probably the best part of this film! He plays Ellen’s love interest, but that’s really not something you want to see in a shark movie.
But the shark is not that great either. He looks so fake and does weird things. He even ‘stands up’ in the water, while roaring. Sharks don’t roar!!! And when the boat hits it, the shark explodes. How? I’m not a science nerd, but even I know that a shark can’t explode by hitting it with a sailboat.
This film has absolutely no respect for the masterpiece “Jaws”. It’s a monstrosity. One of the worst movies ever made.

100 Movie Challenge 2017 - # 111: Going in Style

Description: Desperate to pay the bills and come through for their loved ones, three lifelong pals risk it all by embarking on a daring bid to knock off the very bank that absconded with their money.

Review: Joe has trouble keeping up when his bank tells him he loses his house in 30 days, when he doesn’t pay his mortgage. His friend Willie hardly sees his daughter and granddaughter, who live on the other side of the country and hides a serious kidney problem. And their friend Albert fills his days teaches music class to untalented kids. The three know each other through their work at a factory and are currently enjoying their pension. At least, they are supposed to. Because their former bosses decide to pause their pensions. Joe, Willie and Albert have had it and decide to rob a bank.
“Going in Style” is directed by actor and creator of “Garden State”, Zach Braff. He must have thought to have gold with three actors of this standard. It doesn’t even matter what you let them do. And that’s the power of this film, the comical interaction between the three main characters.
The sentimental part is kept to a minimun. “Going in Style” shows men who can be themselves, love their families. The main characters are all likeable in their own way, I don’t think this movie would have worked as well as it did, if it where three random lesser known actors. It’s Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin that make this movie. With that, there are some fun supporting roles, especially Christopher Lloyd is worth mentioning.
The part where the three men are planning their heist is the most fun. Testing their criminal capacities, trying to rob a local supermarket, it’s so hilarious. This comedy really made me laugh out loud, something most comedies nowadays can’t even do. Most people wouldn’t call “Going In Style” a great film, but it’s mostly the sympathy you have for the characters and the interaction between the three gentlemen that win you over. It’s one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in the past years. And that’s thanks to Caine, Freeman and Arkin. Highly enjoyable movie.

Movie Battle: Interstellar Vs. The Martian

They are very different movies, but both science fiction and also both happen to have Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain in it. I would like to let those two movies go head to head in this battle. Let’s see who wins the battle: “Interstellar” Vs. “The Martian”.

 

 

ACTORS

Interstellar: Matthew McConaughey is the lead and his has proven over the years that he can easily carry a movie. I haven’t been a fan since the beginning, but I’ve come to love McConaughey. Anne Hatahway not so much though, I just never really liked her acting. Jessics Chastain on the other hand is one of my favorites and she is really good in “Interstellar”. And Michael Caine as well.

The Martian: Matt Damon is fantastic in his role as Mark Whatney. Most of the scenes he is in, he is alone. He gives away a great performance, it might even be his best. Jessica Chastain is good as well, very strong and solid.

STORY

Interstellar: It’s a Christopher Nolan directed film, so it’s anything but standard. A group of explorer’s have to travel through a wormhole in order to save humanity. Time is different there, so what’s in space is seven years on earth (or something like that). I didn’t really like the ending.

The Martian: During a mission to Mars, astronaut Mark Whatney is presumed dead and his crew returns. Not knowing that Whatney was actually still alive. Now he is alone on a planet where nothing grows. He has to ‘science the hell out of it’. It’s a great story and so well executed. It was also a lot funnier than I expected it to be.

EFFECTS

Interstellar: If you know Nolan’s work, you know that he is great with effects. Although he doesn’t overuse CGI, it always looks stunning.

The Martian: The movie looks very good, also not overusing any CGI. Just clean and solid.

WINNER

I think “Interstellar” is a bit overrated, so I’m going with “The Martian” which I absolutely loved and it was one of my favorites of 2015.

100 Movie Challenge 2016 - # 18: Interstellar

Review: Christopher Nolan’s movies can be called cold, but certainly have emotion. The (anti) heroes in movies like “Memento”, “The Prestige” and “Inception” are all driven by human emotion like heart ache or jealousy. In “Interstellar” we also meet those characters. That’s not a bad thing though, when they are portrayed by great actors like Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain and Michael Caine.

McConaughey plays the disillusioned widow Cooper, former test pilot for NASA and now a farmer. The film is set in the near future, where the earth is exhausted and producing food is the main priority instead of science. What people don’t know is that secretly NASA is planning a mission to save mankind and move them to another planet, that can be reached through a wormhole. Cooper is asked to investigate the planet, together with a group of fellow astronauts. This means Cooper has to leave his two children and he can’t tell them when or if he will return.

The emotional scenes between Cooper and his daughter Murph are a highlight for me. They are so sincere and you feel it yourself. And although the drama is the heart of the film, Nolan focusses more on the scientific aspect of the story. Nolan likes old school effects, doesn’t use CGI if not necessary. The spaceship décor was build, very detailed and the robots CASE and TARS were all controlled manually.

The first half of the film is much better than the second and after two hours, you start to feel the length of the film. The happenings are randomly piling up and the characters can’t carry the drama anymore. And that ending, I don’t know.

Many say it’s Christopher Nolan’s best, I do not agree. Not even remotely. I think “Interstellar” is slightly overrated, although I can see and understand what Nolan wanted with this film.

100 Movie Challenge 2015 - # 33: Kingsman: The Secret Service

Description: A spy organization recruits unrefined, but promising street kid Eggsy (Taron Egerton) into the agency's ultra-competitive training program, just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius (Samuel L. Jackson).

Review: Yeah to the spy movie! Matthew Vaughn made one of his best with “Kingsman: The Secret Service”. Pretty good for a movie I didn’t really expect much from. Vaughn, who made movies like “Kick-Ass” and “Layer Cake” really exceeds himself this time. The movie has everything you need for the next two hours: elegance, a good cast and a great script. But it’s overall its youthful character that makes this film so pleasurable. It’s like Vaughn just watched his first spy movie and jumped into this project with childlike nativity and creativity.

Based on the comic book series “The Secret Service” by Dave Gibbons and Mark Millar, “Kingsman: The Secret Service” shows us how secret agent Harry Hart recruits rebel Eggsy. Hart gets Eggsy in to a secret agency called The Kingsmen.

“Kingsman: The Secret Service” is full of nostalgic: the love for the spy movie genre is clearly present. But you can’t compare it to other movies in that genre. Vaughn managed to create something that stands on its own and is fresh and bold. Everything that makes a spy movie great is present: extravagant gadgets, a charismatic villain, stylish spies, beautiful women and a cool soundtrack.

Colin Firth, the face of British cinema, is good as always. Stylish and proud he shines as bad-ass spy. If you think he’s stiff, then this movie might change your mind. Who would have thought that Firth could easily overpower a pub full of rioters? Also Samuel L. Jackson is convincing as the bad guy, although I don’t know why he has that weird lisp. But it’s in fact new guy Taron Egerton, who plays Eggsy, who wins over our hearts.

“Kingsman: The Secret Service” succeeds in being funny and exciting consistently, without overdoing it. It’s a real joy, from beginning ‘till end and time flies when you’re watching it. “Kingsman: The Secret Service” is cinema with balls, a movie that will give you a grin even after you left the theater.

100 Movie Challenge 2014 - # 90: Mr. Morgan's Last Love

Description: A look at the life-changing connection between the retired and widowed American philosophy professor Matthew Morgan (Michael Caine) and the young Parisian woman Pauline (Clémence Poésy).

Review: Life has lost its appeal for Matthew, living in Paris alone with his kids and grandkids on the other side of the world. But while taking the bus one day, his life changes. He meets the young Pauline, who walks him home. In the days that follow, Matthew and Pauline meet again and he takes part in one of her dance classes. The base for an extraordinary friendship is formed. Pauline is an orphan and feels a father-daughter connection when she is around Matthew. And Pauline reminds Matthew of his deceased wife.

“Mr. Morgan’s Last Love” is a heartwarming dramedy, based on the book “La Douceur Assassine”. If you love Paris, this movie shows us this beautiful city in the fall. The relationship between Pauline and Matthew is just as complex as it is simple. There is a deep friendship between the two and it’s completely believable. Michael Caine is touching as Matthew, who is trying his best to speak French but hardly ever succeeds. His young opponent Clémence Poésy portrays Pauline as a gentle, kindhearted, positive and sincere woman, with the believe that there is something good in every person. She can really put a smile on your face.

You really relate to the characters, but some parts where a bit rushed. The connection between Morgan’s son Miles and Pauline for instance. You can see it coming, but the build up to the moment isn’t executed the right way. And so is the reconciliation between Matthew and Miles. It all feels a bit rushed.

The movie only has some minor faults, but overall it’s a beautiful film full of heart. There is just something about this city that always warms my heart.

Movie Battle: V for Vendetta Vs. Children of Men

The Movies I choose this time are both sci-fi films set in the future, where most countries in the world are near destroyed by natural disasters, riots and war. England has established a totalitarian regime that shields the country from outsiders. In both movies the society is portrayed as extremely racist and xenophobic and the main characters are part of an underground movement. To battle it out, here is “V for Vendetta” Vs. “Children of Men”.

 

CAST

V for Vendetta: Hugo Weaving plays lead character V, a freedom fighter wearing a Guy Fawkes mask. His performance, even without ever seeing his real face, is breath-taking and phenomenal. Natalie Portman also does a great job, especially the rooftop scene.

Children of Men: Clive Owen, who a lot of people say can’t act, does a fantastic job. He plays main character Theo Faron. Julianne Moore and Michael Caine also have solid roles, but they don’t have very big roles.

STORY

V for Vendetta: Great Britain is now a fascist state. A man named V uses terrorist tactics to oppress society. He rescues the young Eve from the secret police, and she becomes his ally. It’s based on a graphic novel, that I have read. It’s very close to its source. The story is great, the character of V even more.

Children of Men: Dystopian London, surrounded by violence and warring nationalistic sects. People are no longer aloud to have children. The youngest citizen, just 18 years of age, has just died. Then a young pregnant woman is discovered and the desperate journey to deliver her to safety starts. Great idea for a story.

EFFECTS

V for Vendetta: There are some amazing fight scenes in it. Especially the one in the dark tunnel (I believe it’s a tunnel). The while movie has a dark, greyish tone.

Children of Men: This also has a certain tone, more the grey, bluish tones. They makers made London look like a worn down plays, filled with violence and war.

WINNER

Although both movies are amazing, with great acting and fantastic stories, I will have to go with “V for Vendetta”. That’s a movie I’m more willingly to re-watch.

100 Movie Challenge 2014 - # 47: Now You See Me

Description: An FBI agent (Mark Ruffalo) and an Interpol detective (Mélanie Laurent) track a team of illusionists who pull off bank heists during their performances and reward their audiences with the money.

Review: “Now You See Me” introduces the four illusionists in the opening sequence. All of them with their own specialty. The magicians are brought together by a mysterious figure and they get a Las Vegas show. In that show it seems that ‘the four horsemen’ are robbing a bank in Paris. FBI agent Dylan Rhodes and Interpol agent Alma Vargas have the task to find out how they pulled it off.
Because you’re constantly shifting between the four illusionists and the two law enforcers, it’s really hard to see the ethnic difference between good and bad. It’s never clear who the real protagonist is in the movie. The story is missing an edge. With that the characters aren’t all as important. Of the four magicians, there are only two that really have a purpose. The other two stay in the background. Eventually we get a pretty predictable twist in the end.
The visuals are amazing, it’s a very good looking movie. And it’s certainly a very good concept. But it’s not as sensational as the tricks in the film.

Movie Tip #42 - Inception

Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime. But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming

Review: I saw this movie yesterday, but I wanted to see "Inception" from the first time I saw its trailer. It drew my attention. And after seeing it, it blew me away! Christopher Nolan created a very complicated story, but if you just pay attention, it isn't that hard to follow. At least not for me. It's an excellent and breathtaking movie. Exciting, mysterious, genious and intriguing. The story is brilliant and the way Nolan brought it to life is even more genious! Leonardo DiCaprio as Cobb, amazing. He puts his emotions out there, strong performance. The team around him, the same. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Ken Watanabe, Tom Hardy and Dileep Rao, great esemble. Marion Cotillard is also very believable as Cobb's late wife Mal. I loved everything about this movie, probably the best film I saw this year. I wouldn't recommened this movie to everyone, because it's not just a no-brainer. But if you're a movie lover it's a GO SEE!
