What's in a Movie year - 2006

Taking a look at the year 2006, picking my 10 favorite movies from that year in random order.

Casino Royale
James Bond takes on the evil underworld banker Le Chiffre at Casino Royale. Not in a firefight, but at the poker table. The producers of the film series have seized the opportunity of the 21st Bond film to re-model and knead their unyielding hero. And with success, because I believe it’s the best Bond film to date. It’s less ironic, more serious, with more emotions and nuances. Daniel Craig was also a very good choice for the role, which he came to reprise four times.

Babel
A rich American couple is on vacation in North Africa when a couple of shepherd boys playing around with a gun do something unfortunate. The nanny of the Americans wants to got to her son’s wedding in Mexico, but cannot leave the children on their own. And the daughter of a Japanese tourist gets tangled up with herself. Clever mosaic film by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, that links the fate of people all over the world, with fascinating results. The film got seven Oscar nominations and I think this is a movie that a lot of people forget about. Which is a shame.

The Departed
With “The Departed” Martin Scorsese returns to his best, grim film from the seventies, such as “Mean Streets” and “Taxi Driver”. In modern-day Boston, agent Billy Costigan infiltrates the criminal Irish-American world. Mafia boss Frank Costello has an informant with the police. So, two moles, but who makes the first mistake? “The Departed” is a remake of the Hong Kong film hit “Infernal Affairs” and at the same time a rough portrait of contemporary America.

The Last King of Scotland
After graduating in the seventies, the Scottish doctor Nicholas Garrigan leaves for Uganda to work in a small clinic. Then he is approached by the charismatic and charming brand new president Idi Amin, who persuades him to become his personal physician, also because he seems to love Scotland enormously. A bond develops between the two, but gradually Nicholas gets to know the true nature of President Idi Amin. Powerful tour de force of Forest Whitaker, who makes a brilliant transformation. He quite rightly won an Oscar for it.

The Painted Veil
The marriage between the spoiled Kitty and the workaholic doctor Walter is not exactly happy. When Walter catches Kitty in the arms of someone else he makes a drastic decision. They go to a remote Cihnese village, to fight cholera, but also to teach Kitty a lesson. A beautiful adaptation of the novel written by M. Somerset Maugham. With great performances by Naomi Watts and Edward Norton.

V for Vendetta
In the future Great-Britain will be a dictatorship, the restriction of freedoms will be justified by the government by pointing out the danger of terrorism. The young woman Evey stumbles upon the masked V, the only one who seems to resist oppression. Evey is captured, tortured, bald and has to choose whether to take sides with the rebel. The Wachowskis, previously responsible for “The Matrix”, adapted Alan Moore’s graphic novel into a scenario. Moore’s political message was severely watered down, yet this is an intriguing film that still captured the message.

Little Miss Sunshine
A dysfunctional American family goes on a road trip in an old, yellow Volkswagen van. They are on their way to California. The sweet, seven-year-old daughter Olive has made it into the finals of the “Little Miss Sunshine” competition. It’s a sweet story, that will guarantee to put a smile on your face. A great ensemble cast in a heartwarming movie.

The Descent
A group of six young women go, to help one of them deal with a trauma, on an expedition in a cave system in a gloomy, dark, remote forest. Caving is a dangerous activity, but the dark, narrow spaces are the least of the girl’s  worries. Because hidden within the caves are some unknown creepy crawlers that have adapted to the darkness. This is one of the scariest movies, not only because of the critters, but also because of the constant claustrophobic atmosphere this film caries.

The Prestige
One evening in late nineteenth-century London a performance by illusionists Robert Angier and Alfred Borden goes horribly wrong. This is followed by a quarrel, bitterness and rivalry. From now on, the two are rivals a complex film by director Christopher Nolan in which the viewer, just like the magician’s audience, is constantly misled. Great performances by Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale as the two rivaling illusionists, and also a good supporting role by Michael Caine.

Pan’s Labyrinth
The eleven-year-old girl Ofelia moves to the house of her new stepfather, a high fascist army officer, with her very pregnant, sick mother in 1944. While he ruthlessly hunts down resistance fighters, she discovers a hidden, magical world, where she meets, among other things, a dragonfly with a human head, an enigmatic Faun n a labyrinth and a gigantic, evil path. It’s a gruesome and dark fairy tale for adults. It won Oscars for make-up, art direction and camera work, which is all obviously well-done.

Top 5 Thursday: Revenge Movies

It’s all about revenge in this top 5. Okay, it’s better not that take revenge, but in movies it’s always so awesome. Here are my five favorite revenge movies.

5. V for Vendetta
Although V is called a terrorist, people who watch the movie all root for him. V is one of the coolest anti-heroes ever and “V for Vendetta” is super awesome.

4. Inglourious Basterds
Taking revenge on those Nazi bastards! That’s what this is about and you don’t feel sorry for them. Especially Shoshanna takes ultimate revenge.

3. Die Hard with a Vengeance
It’s in the title. Not very bright of ‘Simon’ to take revenge on John McClane. You just don’t f*** with McClane.

2. Léon
The most recent watch of this list. “Léon” is kick-ass and touching at the same time. A movie that I never get tired of.

1. Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2
This is my ultimate revenge film (I’m cheating a bit, but they are both awesome and technically they were meant to be one movie). The Bride is probably one of the best movie characters when it comes to taking revenge. And she saves the best for last…. Bill.

Movie Battle: V for Vendetta Vs. Children of Men

The Movies I choose this time are both sci-fi films set in the future, where most countries in the world are near destroyed by natural disasters, riots and war. England has established a totalitarian regime that shields the country from outsiders. In both movies the society is portrayed as extremely racist and xenophobic and the main characters are part of an underground movement. To battle it out, here is “V for Vendetta” Vs. “Children of Men”.

CAST

V for Vendetta: Hugo Weaving plays lead character V, a freedom fighter wearing a Guy Fawkes mask. His performance, even without ever seeing his real face, is breath-taking and phenomenal. Natalie Portman also does a great job, especially the rooftop scene.

Children of Men: Clive Owen, who a lot of people say can’t act, does a fantastic job. He plays main character Theo Faron. Julianne Moore and Michael Caine also have solid roles, but they don’t have very big roles.

STORY

V for Vendetta: Great Britain is now a fascist state. A man named V uses terrorist tactics to oppress society. He rescues the young Eve from the secret police, and she becomes his ally. It’s based on a graphic novel, that I have read. It’s very close to its source. The story is great, the character of V even more.

Children of Men: Dystopian London, surrounded by violence and warring nationalistic sects. People are no longer aloud to have children. The youngest citizen, just 18 years of age, has just died. Then a young pregnant woman is discovered and the desperate journey to deliver her to safety starts. Great idea for a story.

EFFECTS

V for Vendetta: There are some amazing fight scenes in it. Especially the one in the dark tunnel (I believe it’s a tunnel). The while movie has a dark, greyish tone.

Children of Men: This also has a certain tone, more the grey, bluish tones. They makers made London look like a worn down plays, filled with violence and war.

WINNER

Although both movies are amazing, with great acting and fantastic stories, I will have to go with “V for Vendetta”. That’s a movie I’m more willingly to re-watch.

50 Books Challenge 2013 - # 16: V for Vendetta by Alan Moore

Title: V for Vendetta
Author: Alan Moore
Story: Imagine a Britain stripped of democracy: a world of the not-too-distant future, in which freedom was not lost, but surrendered willingly to a totalitarian regime that rose to power by exploiting people's worst fears and most damning weaknesses. This is the setting for the parable of Evey, a young woman who is saved from death by a masked vigilante calling himself only V. Beguiling and dangerous, V ignites the fuse of revolution when he detonates two London landmarks and seizes the government-controlled airwaves, urging his fellow citizens to wake up and shed the blanket of tyranny and oppression in which they have permitted themselves to be cloaked. While those in power take steps to neutralise the threat, the police pursue the mystery of V, unaware of the terrible truth that awaits them at the end of the trail. It is Evey, however, who, with V as her untrustworthy guide, sets out on the most painful path of all: a journey of deception, and self-discovery, deconstruction and re-creation, vindication and vengeance.
Start: april 21st 2013
End: april 29th 2013
Comment: I saved this book for last. i already read "Watchmen" by Alan Moore this month, which wasn't as good as most people said it would be. I expected a lot from "V for Vendetta " as well. The graphics are different. It's darker and more dramatic and I like it that way. It fits the story perfectly. it spoke more to me then the graphics in "Watchmen". V is one of the most awesome characters ever. I love how he talks, his choice of words. Fantastic. My favorite line: “Remember, remember the fifth of November of gunpowder treason and plot. I know of no reason why the gun powder treason should ever be forgot.” But with his fine vocabulairy, it isn't the easies graphic novel to read. I loved the story of V and Evey, loved reading about the two of them. I also liked the shadow gallery. great ending to this reading month.
Rating: 4,5/ 5

Top 5 Thursday: Movie Props I wished I owned

You know those objects that, when you see them, you know exactly which movie it's from. Movie props that you regocnize in an instant. There are props that you just wished you had and in this list I share the ones that I wished I owned.

5. Hamburger phone from “Juno”
I don’t think it is very practical, but it looks so fun. A phone in the shape of a hamburger, come on!

4. Mask from “V for Vendetta”
V is a hero, although people think he’s a terrorist. He does blow up buildings and kills people, but still. He does it for a reason and he only kills people who really deserve it. I just want that mask.

3. The Delorean from the “Back to the Future” series
How cool would it be if we could travel through time? And how awesome it would be if it happened in a Delorean (including Marty McFly). The coolest car in movie history and I’m not even a car lover (or expert for that matter).

2. The piano from “Big”
The scene where Tom Hanks and Robert Loggia play chopsticks on the giant piano. I love that scene. And I really wished I could have the piano. I don’t think I have the room though…

1. Keira Knightley’s dress from “Atonement”
I never wear dressed, but that doesn’t mean I can’t love the look of them. This is without a doubt the most beautiful movie dress ever and I would be proud if I owned it.

They almost made the top 5: The gnome from “Amelie”, the hat from “Indiana Jones” series, the hoverboard “Back to the Future” series, Lightsaber from “Star Wars” series, Wilson the volleyball from “Cast Away”, Sports book from “Back to the Future 2” and the sorting hat from the “Harry Potter” series.

Top 5 Thursday: Rain Scenes in Movies

A new year, new top fives. Here's the first of the year. Because it's raining almost constantly right now, I decided to share with you my favorite rain scenes in movies.

5. Singin' in the Rain
This has to be on the list. The moment where Gene Kelly literally starts to sing in the rain. Even for a non musical lover it's a classic scene.

4. V for Vendetta
De scene where Evy stands on the rooftop of a building, spreads her arms and starts crying. beautiful scene.

3. The Notebook
We all know this scene. Allie and Noah just took a boat ride when Allie asks him why he never wrote her back, because it wasn't over for her. Noah tells her he wrote her a letter every day for a year. Than they kiss each other in the poring rain. Probably also the most romantic scene ever.

2. Jurassic Park
T-Rex escapes from his facility and two of the tour-cars are standing still in front of his cage. He starts to investigates the cars and when Lex and Tim turn on the flashlights they draw T-Rex' attention. This scene is so exciting, the rain makes it even more scary.

1. The Shawshank Redemption
After Andy Dufresne crawled through a sewer, he takes of his shirt, spreads his arms an just stands in the rain. Finally, freedom! This is a classic scene and it gives me goosebumps everytime.

They almost made the top 5: "Spider-Man", "Road to Perdition", "Platoon", "Seven" and "Identity"

Movie Tip #22 - V for Vendetta

Director: James McTeigue

Starring: Hugo Weaving, Natalie Portman, Stephen Rea, John Hurt, Stephen Fry, James Purefoy

Description: In the not too distant future, Britain is filled with torture cells, unfair punishments, prejudice against minorities. However in the mist of all this chaos, one man known only by the name V (Hugo Weaving) dares to stand up to the government and is labeled as a terrorist. One night V rescues a mild young woman called Evey Hammond (Natalie Portman) and an unlikely bond between the two emerges which results with Evey becoming Vs ally. But though V may be charismatic and have a passion for justice he also is bitter and has his own personal hatred of the government for something they did to him long ago. As November the 5th, the day V says he and those who will follow him will stand up to the government once and for all approaches, Detective Finch (Stephen Rea) becomes more and more determined to uncover the truth about V, however his search leads him to ask to question whether or not he is on the right side.

Review: I have the say that this is far out one of the best new movies I have seen over the past five years. It's a bloody masterpiece!!! The character V is very interesting and his quotes are just genious. Hugo Weaving, allthough we never see his face, did a brilliant job portaying him. He created a character you will never forget. I love this man! Natalie Portman is also wonderfull in this film. Especially the scenes where she's in prison. Very intens an believable. The chemistry between those two is absolutely amazing. I've read reviews of people who think it's a bad adaptation of the novel, but these movies are not made for the ones who love the book. They are made for the ones who love movies! So, I highly recommened you this movie, and anyone who tells you otherwise.... don't listen. It's just brilliant!!!
