Rewatching My 100 Favorite Movies - Update 7

I decided to rewatch my 100 favorite movies of all-time. What those are, you can check HERE. I watch them in random order, there is no rhyme or reason there, just watching those movies I love so much.

21/ 100: Amélie (2001)
Truly overflowing with awards and nominations was this sugar sweet romantic comedy. Waitress Amélie decides one day to give other people a hand with happiness. Like a contemporary fairy tale character, she triumphs into the lives of someone who list a box of personal things as a child, of bar customers looking for love, and many others. Then she falls in love herself. With his film, director Jean-Pierre Jeunet paints a friendly, colorful, spotless imaginary Paris where anything is possible. A movie guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Check out my full review HERE

22/ 100: Singin’ in the Rain (1952)
Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont re undisputed box office magnets in the heyday of the silent film. But then Hollywood moves to sound film, and Lina turns out to have a voice like a crow. Perhaps, suggests friendly pianist and Don’t friend Cosmo, it would be an idea to have the sweet-voiced Kathy speak and sing her lines? Quite possibly the best MGM musical of all-time. In addition to the iconic title track, “Singin’ in the Rain” includes catchy songs like “Make ‘em Laugh” and “Good Morning”, which is of course combined with fantastic choreographed scenes. Another movie to always make me happy. Ready the full review HERE

23/ 100: Back to the Future (1985)
Seventeen-year-old Mary McFly travels to the past with the help of the time machine of his friend, Doctor Emmett Brown. There he meets his bumbling father and his charming mother. He will have to pair them up, or he will never be born. Director Robert Zemeckis and writer Bob Gale’s brillian, witty script of this, now classic, time-tracel film was approved by the Universal studios only after long hesitation. It turned out to be a perfect film in the genre, a favorite for many, including myself! HERE is the full review.

24/ 100: Groundhog Day (1993)
Bill Murray is perfect as the cynical weatherman Phil Connors, who keeps waking up on the same day in a North American town. Slowly, Phul becomes imbued with the philosophical sides of his fate and although he doesn’t lose his sarcastic edge, he begins each day, by necessity, with a new and gradually somewhat better life. One of the best comedies from the 1990s, with an otherwise standard story executed brilliantly. Check out the full review HERE

25/ 100: Halloween (1978)
Classic horror about an escaped psychopath who terrorizes his hometown. The film confirmed director John Carpenter’s talent for the genre and earned Jamie Lee Curtis the honorary title of Scream Queen. “Halloween” is successful because of the craftmanship of the acting, the effective lighting and use of the subjective camera, the excellent tension building and editing, and the ingenious music composed by John Carpenter himself. There were many sequels, but none of them matched the atmospheric original. You can read the full review HERE

Oldies Movie Review - Singin' in the Rain

Director:
Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly
Genre: Musical/ Romance/ Comedy
Runtime: 99 minutes
Year: 1952
Starring: Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, Debbie Reynolds, Jean Hagen, Cyd Charisse, Millard Mitchell, Douglas Fowley, Rita Moreno

Description: A silent film production company and cast make a difficult transition to sound.

Review: Fans of musicals will feel like a kid in a candy store while watching “Singin’ in the Rain”. The many songs and dance numbers are unforgettable with all the romance, sensuality, comedy, enthusiasm and craftsmanship.
You also get to see a peace of movie history, when you see the transition from the silent film to the “talkie”, a movie where there is actual talking. We see how hard it was and how at first people were against it. The movie world of the 1920s is shown to us in a very entertaining way. In one of the most hilarious scenes you can see how actress Lina Lamont struggles with the microphone.
The comedy is a strong point. Besides the smart and ironic screenplay, the performances are also good. Jean Hagen is hilarious as the simple, materialistic and bitchy Lina, but also Debbie Reynolds as Kathy Selden is great. Gene Kelly is the focal point and I love him in his role as Don Lockwood. My favorite is Donald O’Connor as Don’s sidekick Cosmo. They work great together and his musical number “Make ‘em Laugh” is one of my favorite moments of the film.
The romantic storyline is not big, but I think it’s better that way. The songs are all fantastic, with Gene Kelly performing “Singin’ in the Rain” as the absolute highlight. This scene always puts a smile on my face.
For the musical fan an absolute must-see. For me, the ultimate movie that just makes me happy every time I watch it.

Rating: 5/ 5

Movies That Instantly Make Me Happy

With all the sadness in the world and everything you have to worry about on a daily basis, it’s nice to have those movies that can put a smile on your face and not having to worry about a single thing.  I put together a list for you, of movies that never failed to make me happy.

Love Actually (2003)
This beloved film may be a Christmas movie, but it can be watched year-round. At least I watch it any time I can. Its huge ensemble cast makes up eight different couples whose love lives are all intertwined. It all culminates in a story that will always warm your heart, no matter how many times you watch it.

The Princess Bride (1987)
This fantasy romance follows long-lost loves Westley and Buttercup, who in order to be reunited, must fight through various obstacles they face in the kingdom of Florin. When I’m in the worst of moods, “The Princess Bride” always gets me laughing.

Forrest Gump (1994)
Tom Hanks stars as Forrest Gump in this 1994 classic. His character is so endearing and it might sound cliché, but “Forrest Gump” never gets old. I have nothing but love for this film.

La La Land (2017)
A pianist and actress transport audiences back to the golden days of Hollywood, when musicals and the art of dance were used to encourage viewers to follow their dreams. The 2017 Oscar-winning film is a must-see for theater buffs, and anyone who loved bright colors and romance.

You’ve Got Mail (1998)
“You’ve Got Mail” is maybe a bit outdated, but this is such a fantastic romcom. It’s over 20 years old, but the dialogues still crack me up and each time Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks find each other in the park at the end, it makes my heart melt.

Singin’ in the Rain (1952)
This is my go-to movie whenever I’m feeling down. It’s a classic and never fails to put a smile on my face. Especially the moment where Gene Kelly sings the titular song in the rain, I can’t stop smiling.

Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
Nothing makes me smile more than a quirky, out-of-the-ordinary family. If this movie doesn’t make you smile, you’re dead inside. It’s about dreams and illusions and the beauty of a dysfunctional family. Pure joy. And Abigail Breslin literally brings sun to the rainiest cold days.

Annie Hall (1977)
“Annie Hall” tells the story of a neurotic New York comedian Alvy Singer who tries to work out why his relationship with Annie Hall ultimately ended and the nature of love. When I first saw this movie, I learned that Alvy Singer is my long lost sibling, because it’s like watching myself. Woody Allen’s hilarious nervous pessimism will have you gunning for happier vibes. The lobster scene alone should make you feel better.

Amélie (2001)
The magic of “Amélie” is in how it defines us not by what we buy or what we consume but by what we do. It’s a whimsical romance, but it’s more than just a girl-meets-boy love story. Amélie attempts to fix the broken people around her even as she ignores her own happiness in the process. Random acts of kindness is Amélie’s middle name.

Intouchables (2011)
It’s a life-affirming, witty, funny and charming movie. The proportions of drama and comedy are almost perfect. The story of two friends, as different as black and white, day and night, is truly amazing.

Big Fish (2003)
Tim Burton made a movie that’s almost like a fairytale. The story of Edward Bloom says that everyone has their own universe inside of them. This is such a positive film, filled with the ‘dream big’ message.

Top 5 Thursday: Movie Sidekicks

A great hero is nothing without its sidekick. Here are my five favorite movie sidekicks.

5. Cato Fong (“A Shot in the Dark”)
He is the man-servant of Inspector Clouseau. Cato Fong basically has one rule he must live by: constantly and unexpectedly attacking Clouseau to keep his wits sharp.

4. Hit Girl (“Kick Ass”)
Call her a sidekick and she will probably kick your teeth in. This mini superhero is handy with all sorts of weaponry and has a really smart mouth.

3. Garth (“Wayne’s World”)
Garth is terrified of girls, but his priorities lie win strumming to the key of rock with fellow music fan Wayne. And he has a permanent grin on his face.

2. Cosmo Brown (“Singin’ in the Rain”)
He is silent film star Don Lockwood’s best friend. His ditty musical number “Make ‘em Laugh” made him win me over!

1. Danny (“Hot Fuzz”)
Danny is a bumbling good-heart small-time cop with small-time deals. Everyone loves Danny!

They Almost Made the Top 5: Spock (“Star Trek), Short Round (“Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”), Dr. Watson (“Sherlock Holmes”), Bubba (“Forrest Gump”), Harry Dunne (“Dumb & Dumber”), Donkey (“Shrek”), Buzz Lightyear (“Toy Story”), Goose (“Top Gun”), Ron and Hermione (“Harry Potter” series), Dr. Emmett Brown (“Back to the Future”), Chewbacca (“Star Wars” series), Dory (“Finding Nemo”) Wilson (“Cast Away”)

DVD Collection Update (8)

I got some new DVD's for my collection. One new movie and some great classics. I'm very happy with these new additions!

The first film I got only cost me 1 euro. That's practically for free. It could be that it was so cheap because it's total crap, but I was always charmed by Ioan Gruffudd and ALbert Finney is a good actor.

I've heard so many great things about "Beasts of the Southern Wild". And now that I saw it myself I understand why. It's an amazing movie. Quvenzhané Wallis, the kid who plays Hushpuppy, is so talented!

I'm most excited about this one! I just loved the first movie "Monsters Inc.", so I pre-ordered "Monsters University" as soon as it was available. It's not as hilarious as the first, but still genious! And I love Mike Wazowski!

This is an absolute classic. And it's the perfect movie for the fall, because in my country that's when it rains a lot (I secretly don't mind at all). I can't wait to rewatch "Singin' in the Rain".

I always like a good detectvie story, but there is no one like Clouseau. The complete "Pink Panther" collection, with all the movies starring Peter Sellers. So none of the crappy remakes or the one with Roberto Benigni.

And finally I found "The Big Lebowski" and what a cool edition this is. It comes with a slipcover. This is such an awesome movie, with off course one of the coolest movie characters ever. They don't call him "The Dude" for nothing.

Top 5 Thursday: Rain Scenes in Movies

A new year, new top fives. Here's the first of the year. Because it's raining almost constantly right now, I decided to share with you my favorite rain scenes in movies.

5. Singin' in the Rain
This has to be on the list. The moment where Gene Kelly literally starts to sing in the rain. Even for a non musical lover it's a classic scene.

4. V for Vendetta
De scene where Evy stands on the rooftop of a building, spreads her arms and starts crying. beautiful scene.

3. The Notebook
We all know this scene. Allie and Noah just took a boat ride when Allie asks him why he never wrote her back, because it wasn't over for her. Noah tells her he wrote her a letter every day for a year. Than they kiss each other in the poring rain. Probably also the most romantic scene ever.

2. Jurassic Park
T-Rex escapes from his facility and two of the tour-cars are standing still in front of his cage. He starts to investigates the cars and when Lex and Tim turn on the flashlights they draw T-Rex' attention. This scene is so exciting, the rain makes it even more scary.

1. The Shawshank Redemption
After Andy Dufresne crawled through a sewer, he takes of his shirt, spreads his arms an just stands in the rain. Finally, freedom! This is a classic scene and it gives me goosebumps everytime.

They almost made the top 5: "Spider-Man", "Road to Perdition", "Platoon", "Seven" and "Identity"
