Review: With the film “Ed Wood”, director Tim Burton pays a wonderful tribute to a colleague who went down in history as “the worst filmmaker of all time”.  Edward D. Wood Jr. owes his reputation to three B-movies he made in the 1950s. the director operated on the fringes of Hollywood, surrounded himself with a bizarre ensemble of actors and preferred to dress in pink angora sweaters.
At first glance it seems an odd combination: one of the most successful directors of the last decades, responsible for a bunch of fantastic movies, is making a film about the ultimate loser in Hollywood history. On closer inspection, however, the life and work of Tim Burton and Ed Wood appear to have striking similarities. For example, both grew up with a strong love for horror films and later both worked with the horror idols of their youth. Burton worked three times with the horror star Vincent Price, who died in 1993. Wood called on his childhood idol Bela Lugosi three times in the 1950s, the Hungarian actor who celebrated triumphs in Dracul in 1931, but never managed to pull off his mot famous role thanks in part to his Eastern European accents. Both directors became close friends with their elderly film stars, and the friendship between Ed Wood and Bela Lugosi occupies a central place in Burton’s film.  
Ed Wood had, besides his passion for film, a love for dressing up in woman’s clothes. In 1953, Wood had the opportunity to combine these two passions. That’s how the movie “Glen & Glenda” was born. His directorial debut was laughed at an not taken seriously at all. But he still manages to stay positive and makes the horror film “Bride of the Monster”, again with Bela Lugosi.
Thanks to Wood’s engaging personality and indestructible optimism, the incompetent director managed to scrape together money again and again. In addition, he worked like a magnet on all sorts of notable figures. His entourage included, in addition to Lugosi, the 100-pound Swedish wrestler Tor Johnson, TV-presenter Vampira and pseudo-psychic Criswell, the eccentric cousin Bunny Breckinridge and the color-blind cameraman Bill Thompson. The while bunch eventually starred in Ed Wood’s ‘masterpiece’ “Plan 9 from Outer Space”, the film Wood would eventually be remembered by.
Tim Burton shows himself to be a compassionate biographer with “Ed Wood”. He focuses on Wood’s boundless optimism, he ends his film with the premiere of “Plan 9 from Outer Space”. Through moody black-and-white photography, beautiful art direction and a few visual and verbal quotes, Burton manages to excellently capture the atmosphere of Wood’s heyday. As for the actors, there is a minor miracle: with Martin Landau leading the way, the company in “Ed Wood” seems straight out of Wood’s original film.
Landau’s performance as Bela Lugosi is truly amazing. And Johnny Depp, who plays the titular character, gives away a great performance as well. A small role for Vincent D’Onofrio as Orson Welles is really memorable and Bill Murray is fantastic as ever.
“Ed Wood” is a great film, in my opinion a very overlooked and underrated film by Tim Burton.

Movie Review - Kiss the Ground

Description: A revolutionary group of activist, scientist, farmers, and politicians band together in a global movement of “Regenerative Agriculture” that could balance our climate, replenish our vast water supplies and feed the world.

Review: “This is the story of a simple solution, a way to heal our planet”, says actor Woody Harrelson, narrator in the Netflix documentary “Kiss the Ground”. That sounds hopeful and it is, although the first 25 minutes are far from uplifting. Because before we get to the solution, we get an explanation in detail how we ended up here and where things went wrong. In short: pesticides, monoculture and industrialized agriculture.
Because we started ploughing and spraying with chemicals, we killed the microbes in the soil. No healthy soul without microbes. And without healthy soil the CO2, which is normally stored in the soil in large quantities, goes back into the atmosphere. Desertification occurs, driving 40 million people from their land every year. If we continue like this, y 2050 there will be about a billion people on the run as a result of desertification. So much for a brief summary of the first 25 minutes of misery.
No crisis is so great or there are always people out there who won’t give up says Woody Harrelson. For example, we see a regenerative farmer from North Dakota, who saw his harvest fail year after year to due extreme weather conditions. Until one day he ran out of money to buy fertilizer and pesticides and was forced to seek refuge in regenerative agriculture. Not only has he been doing well financially since then, but you can also see a clear difference between his lusg green land and the parched land of his neighbor.  
There is also the story of Loess Plateau in China. Once the most dehydrated and neglected piece of land on earth, until scientist started restoring the land. The images before and after show how a dusty void can turn into a true green paradise.
Besides Woody Harrelson narrating the documentary, lots of famous stars join him in the fight for a better planet. Supermodel Gisele Bündchen and her husband, American footbale player Tom Brady, singer Jason Mraz and actors Ian Somerhalder, Patricia Arquette, David Arquette and Rosario Dawson. All of them know how important our soil is and found a way to help our planet. As Patricia Arquette is committed to compost toilets.
Overall, “Kiss the Ground” is a very interesting documentary and an eye-opener.

90s Movie Review - Lost Highway

Description: After a bizarre encounter at a party, a jazz saxophonist (Bill Pullman) is framed for the murder of his wife (Patricia Arquette) and sent to prison, where he inexplicably morphs into a young mechanic and begins leading a new life.

Review: Fred Madison is leading a happy life with his wife Renee. One day they find a videotape on their doorstep, with shots of their house on it. A day later, they find another tape, but this time with shots from inside the house and even with Fred and David sleeping. They call the police, but they can’t do anything since there is no proof of a break-in. the tapes keep coming. On the last tape, Fred sees how his wife is being killed and later he is arrested for the murder of his wife. When he is rotting away in his cell, Fred turns into Peter Dayton. Since he isn’t the man who killed Renee, he is released.
“Lost Highway” is a post-modern film noir. And it’s a film with so much imagination, bizarre imagery, it’s vague cinema. And David Lynch is the man for it. It’s a little easier to follow then “Mulholland Dr.”, but I still wonder what goes on inside Lynch’s head.
There a people that call his work pretentious crap, but I do not agree at all. It’s cinematographic art. the atmosphere is dark and absurd and very violent. The acting is strong and the soundtrack is chilling.
“Lost Highway” is one of those films that gets you thinking and it starts conversations, like almost all of David Lynch’s movies. Everyone has a different theory and you never know what is really going on.

100 Movie Challenge 2017 - # 1: Crash

Description: After getting into a serious car accident, a TV director (James Spader) discovers an underground sub-culture of scarred, omnisexual car-crash victims who use car accidents and the raw sexual energy they produce to try to rejuvenate his sex life with his wife.

Review: The film is set in Los Angeles. James and Catherine are a married couple drwn into an underworld where people try to get sexual satisfaction through automobile crashes. James discovers this when he is in a car accident himself. Weirded out yet? Well, I was. It’s a weird film, violent and explicit. Definitely not for everyone.
It is a fascinating premise and it starts off quite promising. However, James Spader’s character never really shows a spark of life. Not do any of the other characters. In the end we don’t really care about any of these characters. It becomes a game of guessing who will sleep with who next.
The film is risky and I can see what director David Cronenberg wanted to do, but this film didn’t really get me. Probably because I was weirded out most of the time. Cronenberg is known for his violence and provocative style of storytelling. And I usually like his films. “Crash” sadly isn’t one of them.

100 Movie Challenge 2016 - # 49: Little Nicky

Description: After two of the devil's three sons escape Hell to wreak havoc on Earth, the devil (Harvey Keitel) must send his third son, the mild-mannered Nicky (Adam Sandler), to bring them back before it's too late.

Review: Adam Sandler doesn’t have the best reputation, but he has made some great memorable comedies like “Billy Madison”, “The Wedding Singer” and “Happy Gilmore”. “Little Nicky” unfortunately isn’t one of them.
Sandler plays one of Satan’s three sons, who has to stop his two other borhters from creating a battlefield on Earth. This character, Nicky, has a major speech impediment and is actually a more kind hearted guy.
The movie is filled with bad jokes and there is way too much going on. Sandler’s jokes are often bad, but bearable and still funny. Here in “Little Nicky” I didn’t really laugh a lot and I was a bit annoyed with the film.
“Little Nicky” is probably one of Sandler’s worst films.

Oscar Predictions 2015

I'm going to give it a shot again. Today the nominees for the 87th annual Academy Awards were announced and I've been predicting the winners for a couple of years now. So this year is no different. Some really great nominees this year, but as usual I don't agree with every all the winners. So, here are my prediction on who will win and who I think should win the awards.
