Netflix Friday - Volume 88

Some Netflix film tips for the weekend! And there is something for everyone, since I picked a movie for all the different genres.
 

Action: The Revenant (2015)
A frontiersman (Leonardo DiCaprio) on a fur trading expedition in the 1820s fights for survival after being mauled by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team.
 

Drama: The Lost Daughter (2021)
A woman’s (Olivia Colman) beach vacation takes a dark turn when she begins to confront the troubles of her past.
 

Comedy: Superbad (2007)
Two co-dependent high school seniors are forced to deal with separation anxiety after their plan to stage a booze-soaked party goes awry.
 

Animation: The House (2022)
Across different eras, a poor family, an anxious developer and a fed-up landlady become tied to the same mysterious house in this animated dark comedy.
 

Romance: Notting Hill (1999)
The life of a simple bookshop owner (Hugh Grant) changes when he meets the most famous film star (Julia Roberts) in the world.
 

Horror: Don’t Breathe (2016)
Hoping to walk away with a massive fortune a trio of thieves break into the house of a blind man (Stephen Lang) who isn’t as helpless as he seems.
 

Science Fiction: Inception (2012)
A thief (Leonardo DiCaprio) who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a C.E.O., but his tragic past may doom the project and his team to disaster.
 

Crime: Inglorious Basterds (2009)
A Nazi-occupied France during World War II, a plan to assassinate Nazi leaders by a group of Jewish U.S. soldiers coincide with a theater owner’s vengeful plans for the same.
 

Thriller: Six Minutes to Midnight (2020)
UK, August 15^, 1939: 17 days before WWII, an English teacher and his camera disappear on a coastal boarding school with 20 German teen girls. Miller (Eddie Izzard) gets the job 6 days later, secretly trying to find out what happened.
 

Documentary: The Show Must Go On: The Queen + Adam Lambert Story (2019)
A documentary on how Adam Lambert took over from the legendary Freddie Mercury as the frontman for the rock group Queen.
 
 

Family: Enola Holmes (2020)
When Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown), Sherlock’s (Henry Cavill) teen sister, discovers her mother missing, she gets off to find her, becoming a super-sleuth in her own right as she outwits her famous brother and unravels a dangerous conspiracy around a mysterious young Lord.

00s Movie Review - Superbad

Description: Two co-dependent high school seniors (Jonah Hill, Michael Cera) are forced to deal with separation anxiety after their plan to stage a booze-soaked party goes awry.

Review: “Superbad” is a harsh comedy, about teens trying to get laid before school ends. It sounds lame and unoriginal, but “Superbad” is much more original and honest than you would expect.
Jonah Hill plays the foulmouthed teenager Seth. All he wants is for the pretty Jules to be his girlfriend. His plan is to get her drunk at a party. He convinces his friend Evan that this is the way to get the girl he likes, Becca, to fall in love with him too.
The only problem is the booze. They are under 21 and can’t buy it. The solution: their nerdy friend Fogell, who just got a fake ID, that says he is a 25 year old organ donor called McLovin. Their quest to get alcohol begins.
The harsh dialogues and remarks are fired in speed tempo, by both Jonah Hill and Michael Cera. The timing of both actors is perfect and they both do a great job. But it’s Christoph Mintz-Plasse that steals the show, together with the two crazy cops, portrayed by Bill Hader and Seth Rogen.
“Superbad” is filled with original and hilarious moments. The film also has heart and turns cartoonish characters into real people. Not that the movie has any depth, but it’s a great study of the teenage psyche. “Superbad” has realism and honesty, something that a lot of teen comedies don’t have.
“Superbad” is super funny!

Me & 3 Seth Rogen Movies

You either love this guy or you hate him. I think he’s freakin’ hilarious, although his roles aren’t very diverse. I really do enjoy him and I decided to watch three of his movies. Here are the ones I picked out.

Superbad

Description: Seth and Evan (Jonah Hill and Michael Cera) are best friends, inseparable, navigating the last weeks of high school. Usually shunned by the popular kids, Seth and Evan luck into an invitation to a party, and spend a long day, with the help of their nerdy friend Fogell (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), trying to score enough alcohol to lubricate the party and inebriate two girls, Jules (Emma Stone) and Becca (Martha McIsaac), so they can kick-start their sex lives and go off to college with a summer full of experience and new skills. Their quest is complicated by Fogell's falling in with two inept cops who both slow and assist the plan. If they do get the liquor to the party, what then? Is sex the only rite of passage at hand?
Opinion: It’s typical Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg humor. And I like it. I’m not a big fan of Jonah Hill and Michael Cera, but Seth Rogen, Bill Hader and Christopher Mintz-Plasse really steal the show here. Those scenes with the three of them just crack me up! Favorite character: McLovin (Christopher Mintz-Plasse)
Most memorable quote: “I'd give my middle nut to start dating Becca”. – Evan –
Best scene: McLovin has to try to get liquor, but he worries. Especially that he should have kept the vest on.

Description: While attending a party at James Franco's house, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel and many other celebrities are faced with the apocalypse.
Opinion: I was looking forward to seeing this movie and it didn’t disappoint me at all. It’s so much fun. Although I’m not a Jonah Hill fan, the cast worked perfectly together.
Favorite character: Craig Robinson (Craig Robinson)
Most memorable quote: “I don’t wanna die at James Franco’s house” –Jay Baruchel-
Best scene: Seth and James find out that Jonah is possessed by a demon and they try to hide from him. But Seth’s apparently a loud breather.

Paul
Genre: Comedy
Year: 2011

Cast: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Jason Bateman, Jane Lynch
Description: Two sci-fi geeks take a pilgrimage to America's UFO heartland. While there, they accidentally meet an alien who brings them on an insane road trip that alters their universe forever. For the past 60 years, an alien named Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) has been hanging out at a top-secret military base. When he discovers he's been taken prisoner, the space-traveling smart ass decides to escape the compound and hop on the first vehicle out of town - a rented RV containing Earthlings Graeme Willy (Simon Pegg) and Clive Gollings (Nick Frost). Chased by federal agents and the fanatical father of a young woman that they accidentally kidnap, Graeme and Clive hatch a fumbling escape plan to return Paul to his mother ship. And as two nerds struggle to help, one little green man might just take his fellow outcasts from misfits to intergalactic heroes.
Opinion: We all know the combination Pegg/ Frost works like a charm. And Seth Rogen’s voice is very recognizable, especially the laugh. It’s totally different from the Brittisch comedies they usually make, but it was highly entertaining and very funny. And I liked the supporting roles by Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader.
Favorite character: Graem Willy (Simon Pegg)
Most memorable quote: “This is America. Kidnapping a Christian is worse than harboring a fugitive” – Paul-
Best scene: The first meeting between Graeme,Clive and the alien Paul.

Top 5 Thursday: Emma Stone Characters

I love Emma Stone. After seeing here in "Zombieland", where I discovered her, I wanted to see more of her. She is awesome!! Here are my five favorite roles.

5. Jules from “Superbad”
She's great as Jonah Hill's crush Jules. She's a nerd magnet, but she sincerely likes him. And she's actually believable while acting nice to him.

4. Hannah from “Crazy, Stupid, Love"
Hannah is a smart woman who knows what she wants, but she isn't always sure when to put it out in the open. I love her together with Jacob.

3. Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan from “The Help”
Skeeter is determined to reach her goal and she wants to tell everyone her story. Or actually the story of the black help. I admire her strength and the way she believes in herself and how she knows what is really important in life.

2. Wichita from “Zombieland”
Wichita is simply kick-ass. She seems tough on the outside, but on the inside she's a kind and sweet woman.

1. Olive Penderghast from “Easy A”
My favorite Emma Stone character. I love her wit, intelligence, sense of humor, intellect and kindness. Olive is one of the best characters ever written for film and I adore her. Everything about her.
