Rewatching My 100 Favorite Movies - Update 4

I decided to rewatch my 100 favorite movies of all-time. What those are, you can check HERE. I watch them in random order, there is no rhyme or reason there, just watching those movies I love so much.

8/ 100: Nightcrawler (2014)
Jake Gyllenhaal plays Lou Bloom, who discovers that he can make money by filming victims of accidents and crime scenes. He sells them to TV stations, that will air the sometimes gruesome footage during news reports. Bloom becomes more and more involved and gets deeper into the world, without actually thinking of the victims he’s filming. Gyllenhaal gives away a masterful performance, where he portrays a man who has nothing to offer, who eventually gets this disturbing personality. One of Gyllenhaal’s best movies to date. You can read my full review HERE

9/ 100: Goodfellas (1990)
For as long as he can remember, Henry Hill has wanted to be a gangster. And from the age of sixteen he is indeed allowed to work for the Italian mafia family the Luccheses. His career goes well. Director Martin Scorsese loved listening to the strong and funny stories told on street corners by gangsters in the New York neighborhood he grew up on when he was young. He based his film on the biography of the real-life Henry Hill. “Goodfellas” is one of those films everyone just has to see at least once. You can read my full review HERE

10/ 100: Prisoners (2013)
On the evening of Thanksgiving, two girls disappear without a trace. The only clue leads to an RV, but the owner is soon released due to lack of evidence. Keller, the father of one of the girls, decides to take matters into his own hands. “Prisoners” is a sublimely constructed thriller from director Deni Villeneuve, who hasn’t made a bad or mediocre movie so far and is one of my current favorite directors. He takes the viewer on an emotionally gruellig journey through a landscape devoid of any shred of sunlight. You can read my full review HERE

11/ 100: Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991)
After returning from the Crusades, a remarkably thoughtful Robin Hood attempts to fight the tyrannical Sheriff of Nottingham. It’s a somewhat dated version of the old story, and it’s probably not one of the best movies on my favorites list, but I’ve loved this movie for as long as I can remember. You can read my full review HERE

12/ 100: 50/ 50 (2011)
The title refers to the prognosis presented to 27-year-old Adam, who has a malignant tumor and a fifty percent chance of survival. Screenwriter Will Reiser based the story on his own experiences and hits the right note between light-hearted and sensitive. It’s really difficult to tell a story with such a heavy theme, with such nuance and light-heartedness. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen play well together and “50/ 50” has excellent supporting roles from Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard, Philip Baker Hall and Anjelica Huston. Best & Worst: Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman is a very diverse actor and he has a lot of good movies. Sadly he also made some shitty ones. Here are my best and worst film of Hugh Jackman.

This movie really took my breath away when I first saw it and especially Jackman’s performance is mesmerizing. Such a fantastic film that really got under my skin. I recommended it to a bunch of people after seeing it, and they all agreed.
Honorable Mentions: “The Prestige”, “X2”, “X-Men: First Class”

Jackman has balls hanging from his face. Come on! I can’t believe he agreed to do this. I can’t believe any of the actors did, because this is probably one of the worst movies ever made!
Dishonorable Mentions: “Swordfish”, “Kate & Leopold”

Top 5 Thursday: Kidnapping Movies

Do you have enough ransom money? Well, you should while being in these situations. Here are my five favorite movies involving a kidnapping.

5. The Silence of the Lambs
The movie is mostly about the cat and mouse game between cannibal Hannibal Lecter and rookie FBI agent Clarice Starling. But it’s Buffalo Bill, the kidnapper, that always scared me the most.

4. Taken
An American tourist in Paris is kidnapped, sadly for the kidnappers this girl has an ex CIA agent as her dad. “Taken” has one of the most awesome phone calls in movie history and it introduced us to a new Liam Neeson.

3. Misery
Normally every actor, singer, writer or artist likes meeting his fans. But not when you’re name is Paul Sheldon and Annie Wilkes is your number one fan. She saves him from a car accident and decides to take care of him. But when Annie finds out Paul killed off her favorite book character, Paul is in for one hell of a ride.

2. Prisoners
A movie that blew my mind when I first saw it. Two little girls are gone missing, right after an unknown RV was sighted in the area. When the cops aren’t really making progress, one of the girls dad’s takes the matters in his own hands.

1. Fargo
This is a kidnapping gone wrong, because inept people and shady kidnappers are involved. This dark comedy really works. Especially when someone like Marg Gunderson investigates the case.

They Almost Made the Top 5: Gone Baby Gone, Man on Fire, Ransom, Changeling, Kiss the Girls

Top 5 Thursday: Movies from 2013

It was a pretty good year for movies, 2013. I saw many of them for my 2014 movie challenge, so now I decided to make a top 5 of my favorites from that year. Here it comes.

5. Captain Phillips
Tom Hanks showed us again why he is the best actor in the world. What a fantastic performance, especially that final scene. The movie captivated me from beginning till end.

4. Rush
Not a fan of Formula 1, but a fan of this movie I am. Great performances by both Daniel Brühl and Chris Hemsworth. And Ron Howard is one of my favorite directors.

3. Prisoners
A very good movie, not overhyped at all. Because so many people were so positive, I’m always cautious. They didn’t lie, because “Prisoners” is amazing!

2. The Way Way Back
It’s a movie that probably not a lot of people saw, but I love it. I already saw it many times and I will rewatch this film many times in the future. It’s the kind of movie I love, Indies with a good combo of comedy and drama.

1. The World’s End
The conclusion in the so-called ‘Cornetto-trilogy’. I still hope that Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost will continue making movies together. “The World’s End” never played in our theatres, because they thought it wouldn’t get enough audience. Well, that proofs that the Netherlands is a weird country. It’s one of the funniest movies ever and the best of the year 2013.

They Almost Made the Top 5: Warm Bodies, Don Jon, Fruitvale Station, Star Trek Into Darkness, Inside Llewyn Davis, Nebraska, This is the End, Dallas Buyers Club, Enemy, Her, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
