Review: After a small role in “The Lost City”, Brad Pitt is back in a lead role. In a so-called bullet train flying through Japan at high speeds, much more is going on than meets the eye.

Assassin Ladybug is given a seemingly simply assignment: steal a suitcase on a Japanese bullet train and get off with it at the next stop. Everything seems to be going smoothly, until Ladybug finds out that he is not the only hitman sent aboard the train with an assignment.  

“Bullet Train” is a highly entertainment film with not a dull moment in it. Besides the amazing action scenes it contains, in colorful neon lights of modern Japan, the actors get every chance to shine in a film that actually takes place almost entirely in one location. And aside from all the spectacle, the actors especially shine in the conversations their characters have with each other. Brad Pitt infuses his character with a genuine amazement at everything, while as a reborn person he clearly forgets what industry he works in. Tangerine and Lemon make a delightful duo, while Prince makes everything to her liking.

The action and humor that alternate at a high pace make the film a cinematic ride to be fully enjoyed. Towards the end, it doesn’t quite manage to maintain that perfect pace, but that’s forgivable.

“Bullet Train” is a ride you won’t soon forget. The combination of humor and action works perfectly. The great action scenes and delightful conversations follow each other at a good pace. And the cast manages to hold your attention. With Brad Pitt as the stand-out. A movie I didn’t expect to love as much as I did.

Movie Review - The Lost City

Description: A reclusive romance novelist (Sandra Bullock) on a book tour with her cover model (Channing Tatum) gets swept up in a kidnapping attempt that lands them both in a cutthroat jungle adventure.

Review: Adventurers Lovemore and Dash are in deep trouble. Tied up, surrounded by snakes and villains. It’s a scene from Loretta Sage’s new romantic adventure novel, that she soon deletes. People love Loretta’s books and are waiting for the newest Lovemore and Dash adventure. Loretta herself is done with the series, but has to go on a book tour for her newest novel. Everyone visits these readings primarily because of the handsome cover model. This Alan, who is supposed to be Dash from the stories, is a muscular guy with long, blond hair and a smoldering look.  

It's your stereotypical opposites attract type of story. When Loretta is kidnapped by a rich industrialist, she ends up on a remote island in the Atlantic Ocean where she must decipher a hieroglyphic code that may lead to a treasure. Alan has to take action, but he is not the most heroic person. At least not as heroic as his character Dash. He sends in help.

The movie reminded me a lot of “Romancing the Stone” and its sequel “Jewel of the Nile’, which have similarities in theme and character types. In “The Lost City” the romance element is more in the background and not as big a part of the film as with the 80s films. Which is a good thing, because that’s the weakest point in the film. Bullock and Tatum are great apart and work well as a team, but not as a romantic couple.

Visually, “The Lost City” is all right. It looks good and the action sequences work well. It has a good adventure comedy mix. Plot-wise, there is not much to it. But the creators know that too. The film is self-conscious and they hint at that in their dialogues.

“The Lost City” is a fun and enjoyable film, pure popcorn entertainment.

20s Movie Review - The Unforgivable

Review: “The Unforgivable” focuses on how difficult it if for convicts to reintegrate into society after their prison sentence.
Ruth Slater has served 20 years for the murder of a sheriff. She is, therefore, a cop killer. She is transferred to place in Chinatown where she shares a room with other women. From there she will have to start her life again. When she gets a job and shows up on her first day, she is already sent walking. The boss apparently found out about her past. So she has no choice but to accepts the offer of her coach Vincent Cross, to work in a fish market. Ruth wants to works as a carpenter and eventually gets a second job.
When Ruth was arrester, her sister Katie was 5 years old. However, the judge has imposed a restraining order on Ruth from contacting her sister who now lives with Michael and Rachel. Ruth also visits her old house, where she lived with Katie and where the sheriff was killed. John Ingram and his wife Liz now live there. John is a lawyer and wants to help Ruth.
“The Unforgivable” is a compelling drama with solid storytelling. There is a plot twist, that you will eventually see coming, right before it is revealed. Sandra Bullock is really strong. She plays a scarred character in a powerful way. The rest of the cast don’t have big enough roles to impress you as much as Bullock does, although Viola Davis does have one scene where she steals the show. But Bullock carries the movie, without her it would be a forgettable movie. Now it’s an above average film that you will remember.

10s Movie Review - Ocean's Eight

Description: Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) gathers an all-female crew to attempt an impossible heist at New York City’s yearly Met Gala.

Review: For those who didn’t know it yet: master criminal Danny Ocean has an equally clever sister: Debbie Ocean. And besides the cast being all-female this time, “Ocean’s Eight” has the same set-up as the other films. This is both a reboot and a sequel to the Steven Sodenbergh trilogy.
Director Steven Sodenbergh acts as a producer this time and Gary Ross takes over as a director. The formula has changed very little. The build-up is practically the same as “Ocean’s Eleven”. The opening scene is exactly the same, only it’s not George Clooney, but Sandra Bullock leaving prison.
Debbie Ocean swears that she leaves the criminal life behind her and she wants to live a simple, good life. As soon as she leaves prison, she  finds her friend and partner Lou. Together they plan a jewel heist and they form an all-female team of a hacker, pickpocket, fashion designer, desperate housewife and diamond entrepreneur. The yearly Met Gala is where it will all happen.  
I think that the cast helps to this film’s success. Sandra Bullock is amazing, she is charming as ever and I love her. She is surrounded by a great group of women, that form a powerful team. And I was amazed by the fantastic costume design, which is hardly ever something I pay attention too. But in this film that really stood out.
It never lives up to “Ocean’s Eleven”, but I enjoyed it more then “Ocean’s Twelve” and “Ocean’s Thirteen”. I found there was no dull moment in this film and it was highly entertaining. I’m just not a fan of the other Ocean’s sequels and I did like this one. I think that’s mainly because I like almost everyone in the cast. Okay, it’s not the most original. Because it is very similar to “Ocean’s Eleven”, aside from the all-female cast and that this time it’s a jewel heist instead of robbing casinos. But overall, “Ocean’s Eight” was a good time.

WEEK 17: A MOVIE SUGGESTED BY A FRIEND

Review: The true story “The Blind Side” is based on, tells the tale of a boy from a bad neighborhood who lives without the safety of a caring family. His name: Michael Oher. Michael goes from school to school and never found a place where he was loved. This changes when he is discovered as a football talent at a Christian elite-school. Sports he can do well, but learning and studying is a bit harder for Michael, since he never learned how. His nickname is Big Mike, because of height and size. One evening, Leigh Anne Touhy sees Michael wandering through the rain and takes him home. From that moment on, Michael becomes a big part of the Touhy family and he gets a chance on a better life, education and sport.
What makes this story so special is that Michael is taken in without any trouble. Leigh Anne, her husband Sean and their kids Collins and SJ don’t mind having him around and welcome him with open arms. The Touhy family is your perfect America family, they live in a big, beautiful house, father and son love football, the daughter is a cheerleader. It’s almost hard to believe that such a wealthy family takes in Michael this easily, since he comes from the this easily. This gives the film a feel-good atmosphere.
It's very easy to see Michael had a tough life. He barely speaks, is shy, doesn’t make contact with other people. Thanks to the Touhy family, Michael can open up, be himself and live his best life. And most of all because of Leigh Anne, who he has a special bond with.
The story is heartwarming and if you are an emotional person like me, you will shed a tear now and then.
Sandra Bullock is fantastic in her role, I loved her portrayal of Leigh Anne Touhy. She is fierce, strong, caring and treats Michael like her own son. Very understandable that Bullock won an Academy Award for this performance.
“The Blind Side” is a beautiful film, based on an amazing story that will fill your heart with joy.

10s Movie Review - Bird Box

Description: Five years after an ominous unseen presence drives most of society to suicide, a mother (Sandra Bullock) and her two children make a desperate bid to reach safety.

Review: Netflix brings us “Bird Box”, a post-apocalyptic tale that somehow reminds me of a mix of “A Quiet Place” and “The Happening”. In “A Quiet Place” the creatures aren’t allowed to hear you, in “Bird Box” you can’t see them. And when you do, you will kill yourself (like in “The Happening”).
“Bird Box” is a film with a lot of potential. The central character is Malorie, a woman who tries to find a safe haven for herself and the two children she is traveling with. And it’s difficult, because the have to be blindfolded at all times. If they don’t, they will simply die.
We see that Malorie is pregnant after a one-nightstand and she doesn’t have contact with the father. In the meantime, we hear people talk about mysterious happenings, where lots of people end up dead. Malorie doesn’t believe in it, until she witnesses it herself when her sister kills herself out of the blue. And soon we find out what is happening. If you see ‘it’, you will die. What it is, we don’t know.
After the introduction, “Bird Box” turns into a pretty standard post-apocalyptic survival film. Where a little group of people tries to survive. And we know not all of them will succeed.
Director Susanne Bier succeed in creating that claustrophobic feel. That gives chills. But that’s were the chills stop. This film’s trailer looked a lot scarier. Overall the film has no real scare, jump scares or shocks.
I usually love the fact that you don’t see the monsters or creatures, or at least not too much. For this film, it’s actually a negative. It could have been more scary if you knew a bit more about the creature and you could see what could be so awful that I makes you kill yourself.
Sandra Bullock is very strong in her role, she carries this film.
Like I stated at the beginning of this review, “Bird Box” had a lot more potential, but didn’t live up to the hype. “A Quiet Place” is much better.

100 Movie Challenge 2016 - # 35: Minions

Description: Minions Stuart, Kevin and Bob are recruited by Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock), a super-villain who, alongside her inventor husband Herb (Jon Hamm), hatches a plot to take over the world.

Review: After the successful animation “Despicable Me” it was expected that there was going to be a spin-off/ origin story about the cute little yellow helpers: the minions. And they are capable of carrying their own movie.

In ”Minions” we see that the yellow men have been around for millions of years and they don’t grow older or reproduce. The minions always want to serve the biggest and most evil villain. After a war, they decide to build their own life in a cave. But after many years, they think it’s time to find a new master.

Three of the minions are send out for this mission. The relatively serious Kevin, the stubborn Stuart and the childish Bob. To focus on only three of them it’s easier to follow for kids and because of the three different characters there is a certain group dynamic. The fact that the minions speak an unknown language could be the films handicap, but interesting enough it isn’t. Their tone and body language often say enough for us to understand them. The comedy of the film is of the slapstick kind, for young viewers it’s a hilarious film.

I read several bad reviews for “Minions”, but I think it’s a perfect film for the targeted audience and I enjoyed the animation.

100 Movie Challenge 2016 - # 4: Gravity

Director: Alfonso Cuarón

Description: A medical engineer (Sandra Bullock) and an astronaut (George Clooney) work together to survive after an accident leaves them adrift in space.

Review: It’s simple: people who end up in a hostile environment with only their own perseverance and the will to survive. It has been done many times. Director Alfonso Cuarón takes it a step further: space. Medical engineer Ryan Stone and astronaut Matt Kowalski have to rely on themselves and each other when they are the only two survivors after their shuttle is destroyed. Without any contact with Earth, they only have each other and the chances of them being saved are minimal.

Over four years it took Cuarón to finish this project and it shows. “Gravity” looks amazing, breathtaking. Not only the visuals of our planet, but the fantastic camera work. Long shots, the opening scene alone takes about fifteen minutes. The camera floats graciously in space and shows us planet Earth and the characters. The way it was filmed, makes you feel you’re weightless. This is one of those films where 3D really adds something extra.

Cuarón pictures space realistically. It’s obvious he paid attention to every detail and what I found the most interesting is the absence of sound. The only sounds you hear are the voices of Stone and Kowalski talking over the radio or their voices muted due to their suits. The silence is scary. From the moment the two astronauts are told to abort their mission, you’re on the edge of your seat.

Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are both very good. There is a huge contrast between the two. Bullock’s Ryan Stone isn’t as comfortable in space as Clooney’s Matt Kowalski. The interaction between the two is sincere. This makes “Gravity” not just a technically difficult film.

“Gravity” is a great move experience.

Best & Worst: Sandra Bullock

Of all the actresses on my favorites list, Sandra Bullock has probably been on there the longest. I just love her natural way of performing. Movie are better because of her. Bullock has a certain charm you just can't ignore. Here are my choices for best and worst movie of Sandra Bullock.

 

We just pretend there never was a sequel to this amazing action movie. Why is “Speed” so good? Because, after even watching it so many times, it still has the tension. Fun fact: the first time I saw this film was on a bus vacation to Spain.

Honorable Mentions: “The Net”, “The Blind Side”, “A Time to Kill”, “Demoltion Man”

 

This is a true abomination, what is she doing here? Even bad actors shouldn’t be apart of this film. Yuck…

100 Movie Challenge 2014 - # 72: The Heat

Review: The role of FBI-agent isn’t new to Sandra Bullock. She played one in “Miss Congeniality”. In “The Heat” Bullock does it again. This time she’s the serious agent Sarah Ashburn, whose only company is her neighbor’s cat. Her co-workers don’t like her because of her ‘know-it-all’ attitude. Even though her qualities as a team player aren’t perfect, her boss gives her a chance: if she manages to track a drug lord, Sarah might get a promotion. Off course it doesn’t go without the proper obstacles. This time in the form of Melissa McCarthy, as detective Shannon Mullins. She is an unconventional cop, with strange interrogation skills and a foul mouth. Ashburn and Mullins are forces to work together, if they like it or not.

The story is pretty plain, but Bullock and McCarthy manage to lift it to a higher level. They work well together and form a great duo. Bullock is great as the somewhat stuck-up Ashburn, but McCarthy steals the show. I especially like the constant offensive insults she makes.

“The Heat” isn’t surprising at all, because we all know that Mullins and Ashburn aren’t going to hate each other the entire movie. The plot isn’t the reason to see this movie. The duo Bullock-McCarthy is though.

Top 5 Thursday: Gorgeous Women That Got 'Ugly' for a Movie

Hollywood is full of gorgeous, beautiful and radiant women. But the most fantastic ones are the actresses that dare to be ugly for a role. Here are my five favorite transformations.

5. Sandra Bullock in "Miss Congeniality"
Bullock played the tough cop Gracie Hart, who walked and talked like a man before she was transformed into a Miss America contender.

4. Salma Hayek in "Frida"
I think Hayek is every man's dream. She is beautiful, curved and has a sexy accent. The unibrow is maybe the ugliest feature of her role in "Frida".

3. Gwyneth Paltrow in "Shallow Hall"
Although this isn't a very good movie, I really liked Paltrow in this film. Funny thing: when Paltrow started wearing the fat-suit, none of the people passing her would meet her eye.

2. Cameron Diaz in "Being John Malkovich"
It's not just the look that's weird, the character of Lotte is also pretty strange. Diaz with her frizzy hair is very memorable.

1. Charlize Theron in "Monster"
Theron is the most breathtaking actress and that makes it so amazing that she went full on ugly for her role in "Monster". That's what I admire about Theron, she truly doesn't care about her beauty, just about her performance. Fantastic.

Best of... Sandra Bullock

She has been one of my favorites for a very long time. Recently she was named "Woman of the Year 2010" so she deserves to be the subject of my 'Best of...' list. Here are my favorite Sandra Bullock movies.

"The Vanishing"
She doesn't have a big role, but her role is crucial because she's the one who vanishes. I think it's a very good film.

"Demolition Man"
You know those movies that you have seen like a hundred times, but you watch them every single they're on. Well, for some reason "Demolition Man" is one of those movies. I just like this so much. It's full of action and humor and I really like the combo Stallone-Bullock. Don't ask me why.

"Speed"
This is my favorite Bullock movie. I remember watching it for the first time. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. It's such an exciting film and she has perfect chemistry with Keanu Reeves. And Dennis Hopper is an awesome villain.

"The Net"
It seems kind of out dated now, the old computers and the disks they use in this movie. But still "The Net" is a very good movie and it's kinda scary when you come to think of it. When someone steals your identity. Bullocks performance was very strong.

"While You Were Sleeping"
Such a sweet love story. I seriously wanted to be her, when I saw it. I'm over that now by the way....

"A Time to Kill"
I'm normally not really a fan of court movies. I mostly loved this film because of Samuel L Jackson. His performance is the strongest. I saw this a lot of times back in the late 90's. I haven't seen it for a while now.

"Miss Congeniality"
Her funniest role ever. Gracie Hart is so awesome. I loved her in combination with Michael Caine. This was such a fun movie, so sad they had to make a second one. That one just wasn't as good.

"Crash"
Fantastic film. Her role is so much different from her other roles. I dont know if this would be my Oscar pick for that year, but it definitely is a very good film. Strong storylines even stronger performances.

"The Proposal"
It wasn't as funny as I expected, but maybe my expectations were very high when I heard this was going to be a movie with both Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds in it. I think they make a great duo and Betty White was just hilarious in this one.

I haven't seen "The Blind Side" yet. And I'm totally looking forward to seeing "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close". It also stars Tom Hanks.

Hanks & Bullock

I read the news yesterday. Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks, two of my favorites, are going to work together. Finally!. It's a movie called "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close". It focuses on a 9-year-old boy who finds a key in a vase that belonged to his father, who died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and searches to find the lock that goes with it. It's based on a book by Jonathan Safran Foer and was released in 2003. Academy Award winners Hanks and Bullock will play the boy's parents.
I'm super excited, because people say that the book is complicated which makes it even harder to turn into a film. And two of my favorites will finally work together! I think they are actors that will have perfect chemistry on screen.

And the winner is....ME!!!

I told you that my brother, my parents and I all made a prediction for the Oscars. We only predicted actor, actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, movie and director. All my guesses where right, my brother missed the director category, my dad only got movie and supporting actor and my mom guessed Sandra Bullock (my mom and dad aren't movie experts...).

I'm glad that I won, but not glad with some winners. I think "The Hurt Locker" is a bit overrated, but I understand why The Academy likes it. Iraq is a very up-to-date topic, but not very original. Mo'nique wouldn't be my pick either, because I'm just not a fan. But again I can understand, because we know her as a comedy actress and she shows us a different side of herself. Director, no, not my pick either. For the same reasons as I wouldn't have picked the movie.

Sandra finally being nominated was awesome, her winning it is even more amazing. She really deserves it. So does Jeff Bridges. I can't believe he never won before. If Morgan Freeman had won, I would be happy as well, he's one of my favorites of all time. Christoph Waltz winning was my highlight!!! He really impessed me in "Inglorious Basterds", especially because I didn't know him before.

Oscar predictions 2010

I'm looking forward to the Academy Awards, in march. I always try to predict and this year so are my parents and my brother. It's a competition and it's fun. It's a bit harder this year, because there are 10 nominees in the category Best Movie, but still it's a lot of fun. I still don't understand why they did that, but anyway.Here are my predictions for the bigger categories:

[MOVIE] "The Hurt Locker" (or "Avatar")
[ACTOR] Jeff Bridges for "Crazy Heart"
[ACTRESS] Sandra Bullock for "The Blind Side"
[SUPPORTING ACTOR] Christoph Waltz for "Inglorious Basterds"
[SUPPORTING ACTRESS] Mo'nique for "Precious"
[DIRECTOR] Kathryn Bigalow for "The Hurt Locker"

I'm actually hoping for Jeff, Sandra and Cristoph. For the film and director I'm wishing that finally Tarantino wins an oscar for "Inglorious Basterds", allthough I think he made better movies, he does deserve it anyway. We'll see, we'll see!!!

Golden Globes 2010

Did everyone see the Golden Globes? Well I did and there were a lot of highlights there. There were also some downsides. I made a list of them:

{Highlights}
- Christoph Waltz winning "Best Supporting Actor" award for "Inglourious Basterds". He was definitely the best performer in that film and he really deserved to win.
- Sandra Bullock winning "Best Leading Actress, Drama" for "The Blind Side". She's one of my favorite actresses and I could never explain why. Now I finally have a good reason!
- Ricky Gervais joking about Mel Gibson
- Robert Downey Jr. winning for "Best Leading Actor, Musical/ Comedy" for "Sherlock Holmes". And his acceptance speech was another highlight.
- Paul McCarthey telling people that animated movies are also for adults... on drugs.
- Jeff Bridges winning "Best Leading Actor" for "Crazy Heart". I always thought he was an underestimated actor. Now he got recognition.

{Downsides}
- Monique winning "Best Supporting Actress" for "Precious". I'm just not a fan of Monique (can't really stand her). I would've given it to Vera Farmiga, Anne Kendrick, Penelope Cruz OR Julianne Moore.
- "Avatar" winning "Best Motion Picture, Drama". Come on, I don't get the whole hype. Why didn't they just give it to "Inglourious Basterds".
- "Inglourious Basterds" not winning at all (besides Christoph Waltz). I knew it! And at the Academy Awards it'll be the same. It's not Academy material.
- "(500) Days of Summer" not winning "Best Motion Picture, Musical/ Comedy".

The rest I didn't really care much for. In two weeks they will announce the Academy Award nominees. I will probably try to guess who will win (and tell you who I want to win). So that's coming soon....
