Review: Escape rooms are a phenomenon. Hollywood is quick to puck up on fads and originality is not that important in the film industry.

In this film, six strangers meet in an escape room. They have all received a mysterious invitation. The tempting sum if $10,000 won over all of them to accept the invitation, even not knowing anything beforehand. Soon the participants discover that something is off and the game is literally deadly. Only by working together can they survive the game. Yet only one person can win the cash prize.

Director Adam Robitel has a lot of cool ideas. The escape rooms are well-thought through and look pretty amazing. He doesn’t take enough time to work them out. He makes an attempt to flesh out his characters, but does this so fleetingly that this attempt fails. Why should you care about these characters? More time and a slightly less hectic pace would have done this film good.

The again, time was put into building a franchise, as Robitel makes no secret of his desire to create multiple volumes around this concept. There are a lot of loose ends that hint at more sequels. And they will happen because of the popularity of the genre, not the quality of the film.

“Escape Room” does look good and is entertaining. But overall the movie is very rushed and you don’t care about the characters.
