Description: A rear family night for Jay (Bart Edwards) takes a brutal twist when he awakens in a basement with three other prisoners. As their vengeful captor runs riot, Jay engages in a twisted battle to solve the puzzle to his past and save his family’s future.
Review: Jay wakes up in the corner of a dusty, dark basement. Handcuffed to the wall. In the other corners are three other prisoners. Parti girl Kat, security guard Adam and a man with his mouth stitched up and a bare and bloody upper body. This is a place of torture. And the masked man responsible for it doesn’t torture the people himself, he forces the four of them to do it to each other.
Aside from this storyline, we also see the story of a young boy who also seems to be kidnapped. He is chained to the wall by some kind of perverted father figure. Without giving too much away, it’s not very difficult to predict where this is going. “The Dare” is far from being innovative and original, but the structure of the story suggests an ambition that wasn’t fully realized.
A horror cliché is that characters often make strange choices, purely to keep the plot going. But here it’s just illogical. This also goes for the writers. And although this may not be the kind of film in which the plot details have the highest priority, but a little more attention to detail would have been nice.
“The Dare” also wants to be “Saw” or “Hostel” a little too much. It’s a milder version of those movies, with less originality as well. It could be an enjoyable film for fans of the genre, although it’s not as intense as the aforementioned films. I’m really like horror movies, but I somehow didn’t really enjoy this one. And it didn’t really scare me that much either, which is kind of essential for a horror movie. And I scare easily, so that says something.
