Review: If you read this review, I assume you have seen all four seasons. If not, be warned: THIS REVIEW CONTAIN SPOILERS!
Let’s just rip the band aid off quickly: the fourth and final season of “13 Reasons Why” is the weakest of them all. It’s actually pretty bad and very unnecessary. The series once began with an interesting story about a girl who commits suicide and explains how she came to this terrible act, by telling her story on thirteen tapes. In the following season, the creators mainly focused on other serious problems that high schoolers face (at least many of them). The fact that they deviated further and further from the original them wasn’t that bad, but in this season it sometimes gets a bit ridiculous.
The second season was a good addition, since it mainly showed us how everyone dealt with aftermath of hearing the tapes and Bryce was put on trial for what he did. The third season already felt a bit unnecessary, but still had some good storylines. And the themes that were addressed, although very heavy at times, where interesting. Compliments for the creators to not shy away from those themes.
But now, the las season. It’s very weak and less interesting. The seasons tarts with a funeral, but we don’t know whose it is. Then we go back in time.
Clay isn’t doing well in this season. He starts seeing things and keeps it hidden from everyone. not so smart, because it only gets worse. He starts seeing Bryce and Monty, they even talk to him. If it was just Clay, it would’ve been okay. But other characters start seeing them too and that is just weird.
What also disturbed me was how people deal with Monty’s passing. In season 2 we see that Monty rapes Tyler by using the stick of a mob. I won’t go into detail, but I think you know what he does with it. I think this is a sick act and in later episodes and season Monty shows no remorse whatsoever. Even when his friends learn about this, they somehow still talk about him as if he was a good guy. No he is not! Did he deserve to die? No, maybe not. But he deserved to go to jail. And then his friends start blaming Clay for Monty being in jail and then being killed there. No, it’s Monty’s fault he had to go to jail and him being murdered there was only the murderer’s fault.
There are two episode in this season that were a low point: Episode 4, were the class goes on a camping trip, and episode 8, where riots are started between the students and cops. Both episodes had me rolling my eyes constantly and were just way too ridiculous. There was something wrong with logic as well. What school in its right mind would think it’s okay to fake a school shooting, to prepare its students for when it actually happens? I think it would traumatize many kids and it could have gone so wrong. And if this wasn’t weird enough, all the parents knew about it and approved of it to happen.
“13 Reasons Why” season 4 redeemed itself a little bit in the last episode, which was pretty strong. But it was already too late, since the overall season was just plain bad. This is a good example of dragging it too far, because the first two season were such a success. They should’ve stopped after season 2.
