I WATCHED THIS MOVIE FOR MY 2021 MOVIE CHALLENGE.
WEEK 9: A MOVIE  WITH MOSTLY BAD REVIEWS

Review: Five friends explore an unknown cave. When the water starts rising they are stuck. But a hungry crocodile is hunting them. “Black Water: Abyss” is a sequel to “Black Water”. An actual abyss hardly plays a role in the film.
There is very little plot to summarize, nor do the characters have much character. Yolanda finds out she is pregnant, Jenn is worried about her relationship, Viktor is recovering from cancer. There is hardly any dynamic between the five friends. They are all just very stupid in the first place, entering that undiscovered cave.
The film is not completely unwatchable. You can sense that these people are in mortal danger, and at times it is portrayed not without merit. The little bit of emotion that the five explorers are supposed to show, comes out quite well. However, there is no character you can latch on to that you really hope will survive. And there’s also little entertaining about the way the crocodile makes its victims. You see it in the distance with its prey in its mouth spinning in the water, sometimes swishing up and down. You hardly see the crocodile.
“Black Water: Abyss” doesn’t even get remotely creative. The filmmakers are doing what they can with the low budget, but you don’t need a lot of money to build some tension. And it’s hardly there. They also decided to add a sub plot of infidelity between the characters, which makes you care even less about them.
I really enjoy monster movies, I don’t care if they are bad or not. But they at least has to be something happening to make it enjoyable. “Black Water: Abyss” lacks a lot.
